Ricardo Gabriel Canales Lanza (born 30 May 1982) is a Honduran former footballer who plays as a goalkeeper.

A Honduran international since 2009, he represented his nation for two Gold Cups and Fifa World Cup 2010.

Club career

Nicknamed el Gato (The Cat), Canales made his debut in league on 16 May 2001 playing for Victoria against Real España.

He was released from Motagua just after he returned from playing with the Honduras national football team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa [1] and he returned to Victoria. [2]

In July 2011 he signed for Atlético Choloma, [3] and after two years of participation the club was regulated to Liga Nacional de Ascenso de Honduras. In the year 2013 he rejoined F.C. Motagua on a one-year contract in which he only completed the Apertura tournament. [4] He signed for C.D.S. Vida at the start of the Clausura tournament after lack of playing time with F.C. Motagua, and was brought in to help the club fight regulation. [5]

International career

He made his debut for Honduras in a June 2009 friendly match against Panama and has, as of July 2012, earned a total of 6 caps, scoring no goals. He was a non-playing squad member at both the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. [6]

The 2010–11 C.D. Motagua season in the Honduran football league was divided into two tournaments, Apertura and Clausura. The preseason started on late June and the Regular season on 7 August 2010.

The 2011–12 C.D. Motagua season in the Honduran Liga Nacional was F.C. Motagua's 61st season in its history; the domestic league was divided into two tournaments, Apertura and Clausura. The Apertura started on 7 August, but due to its participation in the 2011–12 CONCACAF Champions League, their first official game was played on 28 July 2011. Motagua, as title holders, were looking for its 13th domestic championship, and its first CONCACAF achievement. The pre-season started on 20 June 2011.

The 2011–12 season in Honduran Liga Nacional was divided into two tournaments and determined the 59th and 60th champions in the history of the league. It also provided two berths for the 2012–13 CONCACAF Champions League. The Apertura tournament was played in the second half of 2011, while the Clausura was played in the first half of 2012. A new change in the system was used for this season; unlike previous years, 6 teams qualified to the final round, matching team 3rd vs team 6th and team 4th vs team 5th, those who advanced played the semifinals against 1st and 2nd.

The 2012–13 season is F.C. Motagua's 62nd season in existence and the club's 47th consecutive season in the top fight of Honduran football. The domestic league will be divided into two tournaments, Apertura and Clausura. The Apertura was scheduled to be played in the second half of 2012, while the Clausura in the first half of 2013. Motagua will be looking for its 13th domestic championship. Due to an unsuccessful 2011–12 season, the club won't have international participation.

The 2012–13 football season was the 47th Honduran Liga Nacional edition, since its establishment in 1965. The season was divided into two tournaments and determined the 61st and 62nd national champions. The campaign began on 28 July 2012, and ended in May 2013. Club Deportivo Olimpia was the reigning champions after winning in 2011–12.
