Richard Schmidt (born September 3, 1942) is the men's basketball coach at the University of Tampa (NCAA Division II), where he has served since 1983.

Prior to his tenure at Tampa, Schmidt coached the Vanderbilt University for two seasons, and was an assistant for the University of Virginia. He began his coaching career in 1969 at Ballard High School in Louisville, Kentucky where he had a record of 183–32 in seven seasons, including the state championship in 1977. [1]

While at Ballard High School, he coached future Virginia Cavalier and NBA player Jeff Lamp. He went to Virginia with Lamp and two other former Ballard players.

Schmidt played at Fern Creek High School ('60) in Louisville and is a 1964 graduate of Western Kentucky University. [1]

Wes Unseld American basketball player and coach (1946–2020)

Westley Sissel Unseld was an American professional basketball player, coach and executive. He spent his entire National Basketball Association (NBA) career with the Baltimore/Capital/Washington Bullets. Unseld played college basketball for the Louisville Cardinals and was selected with the second overall pick by the Bullets in the 1968 NBA draft. He was named the NBA Most Valuable Player and NBA Rookie of the Year during his rookie season and joined Wilt Chamberlain as the only two players in NBA history to accomplish the feat. Unseld won an NBA championship with the Bullets in 1978. After retiring from playing in 1981, he worked with the Bullets/Wizards as a vice president, head coach, and general manager.

Ballard High School is a high school in the eastern suburbs of Louisville, Kentucky, and is a part of the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) school district. The school opened in the fall of 1968. The first students were in grades 7-9, and a grade was added each year as the building was expanded. This kept the school system from having to transfer upper class students from other high schools. The first class graduated in 1972. From its founding until the mid-1980s the principal was Patrick Crawford. Sandy Allen served from the mid-1980s to the 2003–2004 school year. The principal from 2004 through 2013 was Jim Jury. Staci Edelman was the 4th and shortest standing principal, from 2015-2017, with a term marked by racial tension and controversy. The current principal is Jason Neuss. The school offers grades 9-12.

The 1983 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament involved 52 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 17, 1983, and ended with the championship game on April 4 at The Pit, then officially known as University Arena, on the campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. A total of 51 games were played.

Bernard Hickman

Bernard "Peck" Hickman was an American basketball player and coach. As head coach he led the Louisville Cardinals to the 1948 NAIB Championship, the 1956 NIT Championship and the school's first NCAA Final Four in 1959. He never had a losing season in 23 years as head coach, finishing with a 443-183 overall record, a .708 winning percentage that ranks him among the top 45 NCAA Division I coaches of all time.

Richard William Pitino is an American college basketball coach. He is currently the head coach of the New Mexico Lobos men's basketball team. From 2013 to 2021, he was head coach of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team. He is the son of Iona head coach Rick Pitino. After attending St. Sebastian's School in Needham, Massachusetts, Richard Pitino earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history at Providence College in 2005. He attended Ballard High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and played college basketball for the Butler Bulldogs, where he scored 2,047 points during his career, the second-highest in the school's history. Martin was selected for the All-Big East second team on two occasions, the All-District 5 second team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and as a senior, he was named to the All-Big East first team.
