James Eugene Long was the North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance from 1985 through 2009 retiring as the senior Democratic member of the North Carolina Council of State. He was the third-longest-serving statewide elected official in North Carolina history as of 2009.

Phi Sigma Epsilon (ΦΣΕ) was a North American social fraternity that operated for 75 years until its merger with the Phi Sigma Kappa (ΦΣΚ) fraternity. In 1985,the majority of Phi Sigma Epsilon chapters participated in the merger. Phi Sigma Kappa incorporated many of the symbols of Phi Sigma Epsilon into its own,changing its crest,and expanding its Cardinal Principals,symbolism,rituals,and historical canon to embrace the milestones of Phi Sigma Epsilon's development. These changes were soon fully adopted by all chapters of the fraternity which retained the name Phi Sigma Kappa.
Tau Kappa Epsilon (ΤΚΕ),commonly known as ΤΚΕ or Teke,is a social college fraternity founded on January 10,1899,at Illinois Wesleyan University. The organization has chapters throughout the United States and Canada,making the Fraternity an international organization. Since its founding in 1899,Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity has never had an exclusionary or discriminatory clause to prevent individuals from joining and has instead admitted members based on their "personal worth and character". As of spring 2024,there are 209 active ΤΚΕchapters and colonies with over 301,000-lifetime members.
Alpha Kappa Kappa (ΑΚΚ) is a medical school fraternity that was founded in 1888 at Dartmouth Medical School. AKK had over sixty chapters at various medical schools throughout the United States and Canada for approximately eighty years but now operates with two independent,local chapters.
Sigma Mu Sigma (ΣΜΣ) is a former American college fraternity founded in 1921 at Tri-State University. Sigma Mu Sigma was historically an all-male social fraternity open originally to Master Masons,and later open to all undergraduate male students. As a national fraternity,Sigma Mu Sigma dissolved in 1935 when it was absorbed by Tau Kappa Epsilon. Sigma Mu Sigma was later revived,developed another dozen chapters,and several of these were absorbed by Kappa Sig,Acacia and others. A few remaining chapters of Sigma Mu Sigma transformed into a co-ed service fraternity in 1984 but went defunct around 2020.
Phi Epsilon Pi (ΦΕΠ) fraternity,active between 1904 and 1970 and now dormant,with a predominantly Jewish membership,was founded in New York City and eventually opened at least 48 chapters on college campuses across the United States and one in Canada. After several mergers,it consolidated into Zeta Beta Tau in November 1970.
Alpha Lambda Tau (ΑΛΤ) was a men's college fraternity founded in 1916 at Oglethorpe University. For its first decade Alpha Lambda Tau permitted expansion only within the southern states. At the start of its fourth decade,in 1946,the national organization of Alpha Lambda Tau dissolved;the majority of its chapters affiliated with Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Chi Tau (ΧΤ) was a small national men's fraternity founded on October 3,1920 at Trinity College,the predecessor to Duke University. The majority of its 9 chapters were in North Carolina. It disbanded at the start of the Great Depression,with members and chapters dispersing by 1929. At least two chapters lingered as independent organizations for several years.
