Ricky William Lightfoot (born 31 March 1985) [1] is a British runner who has been a world champion in trail running and a medallist in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge.

Biography

Lightfoot began competing in fell races at the age of fourteen after being inspired by his school caretaker Brian Taylor [2] and was encouraged by his parents Robert and Kathleen. [3] He has been sponsored by Salomon since 2008. [4] Lightfoot is a member of Ellenborough AC. [5]

He has won several of the most prestigious fell races, including the Three Peaks Race, [6] Wasdale, [7] Borrowdale, [8] Ennerdale, [9] the Three Shires [10] and Skiddaw. [11] He won the Lakeland Classics Trophy series in 2007 [12] and 2015. [13]

He has also competed domestically on other surfaces, winning the Brampton to Carlisle and Derwentwater 10 road races and the Cumbria Cross Country Championships. [14]

Internationally, Lightfoot won the Zegama-Aizkorri race in 2009 [15] and finished third in that season’s Skyrunner World Series. [16] He was also third in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge that year when the event was incorporated into the Kaisermarathon in Söll. [17]

He won the Hammer Trail in Denmark, his first ultramarathon, in 2012. [18] In 2013, he won the IAU Trail World Championships when the competition was held in Llanrwst. [19] Also that year, he won the Trail du Colorado in Réunion [20] and the Otter Trail Run in South Africa. [21]

In 2014, he was victorious at the Dodo Trail in Mauritius [22] and the following year he won the Ultra SkyMarathon Madeira. [23]

In 2022, he won the Man versus Horse Marathon. [5]

Lightfoot works as a firefighter, based at Workington Fire Station [24] and is managed by Iconic Agency. [25]

Great Gable Mountain in the United Kingdom

Great Gable is a mountain in the Lake District, United Kingdom. It is named after its appearance as a pyramid from Wasdale, though it is dome-shaped from most other directions. Borrowdale Fell Race

The Borrowdale Fell Race is an annual fell race held in August, starting and finishing in Rosthwaite. It is considered to be one of the "classic" Lakeland races and the route initially heads over Bessyboot before climbing England's highest summit, Scafell Pike. Great Gable is then scaled before a descent to Honister Pass and the final climb up Dale Head. The distance is approximately seventeen miles and the route has around 6,500 feet of ascent.

The Wasdale Fell Race is an annual Lake District fell race held in July, starting and finishing at Brackenclose in Wasdale. The course is approximately twenty-one miles long with around 9,000 feet of ascent and takes in checkpoints at Whin Rigg, Seatallan, Pillar, Great Gable, Esk Hause shelter, Scafell Pike and Lingmell nose wall. The route between Pillar and Lingmell is very rough, with steep technical ground and boulder fields. Among long fell races, Wasdale has one of the highest ratios of feet of ascent per mile, and it is often considered to be the toughest of the British races.

The Three Shires Fell Race is an annual Lake District fell race held in September, starting and finishing at the Three Shires Inn in Little Langdale. After an initial run along the valley, the route climbs steeply to Wetherlam, then down to Prison Band and up to the summit of Swirl How. The course then drops to the Three Shire Stone at the top of the Wrynose Pass, the meeting point of the historic counties of Cumberland, Lancashire and Westmorland. An ascent of Pike of Blisco follows, then the route drops to Blea Tarn before the final climb to Lingmoor Fell and descent to the finish.

Ennerdale Horseshoe Fell Race

The Ennerdale Horseshoe Fell Race is an annual Lake District fell race held in June, starting and finishing at the Scout Camp near Ennerdale Water. The route is approximately 36.8 kilometres (22.9 mi) in length with 2,290 metres (7,510 ft) of ascent and takes in checkpoints at Great Borne, Red Pike, Blackbeck Tarn, Green Gable, Kirk Fell, Pillar, Haycock, Iron Crag and Crag Fell.

Stian Angermund, is a Norwegian male trail runner and mountain runner who won the Salomon Golden Trail World Series in 2021 and 2018. Stian Angermund holds the record of the prestige mountain marathon Zegama Aizkorri Marathon. Stian Angermund won two gold medals at the 2016 Skyrunning World Championships held in Lleida (Spain), in the Vertical kilometer and SkyMarathon.
