Riley Dodge (born October 12, 1988 [1] ) is an American football coach and former player. He has been head coach at Carroll Senior High School since 2018. [2]

Early life

Riley Dodge was born on October 12, 1988. His father is a retired football coach and a former University of Texas quarterback, Todd Dodge. His mother is Elizabeth Neptune Dodge daughter of former Westlake Head Coach Ebbie Neptune. [3]

High school career

Dodge prepped at Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, where he was coached by his father and later Hal Wasson. Dodge played behind the former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy. As a junior, Dodge gained 4,184 yards and 54 touchdowns passing, plus 1,119 yards and 13 scores rushing in Todd Dodge's trademark no-huddle spread offense. His 54 TD passes tie fellow Southlake Carroll alumnus Chase Wasson for third all-time in Texas high school football history. [4] Southlake Carroll won the 5A Texas state championship in 2006 with a 43–29 win over Austin Westlake.

Playing for coach Wasson as a senior, Dodge threw for 3,445 yards and 39 touchdowns in 2007. Southlake Carroll lost to Abilene in the regional semifinals, ending a 58-game winning streak against Texas teams.

College career

Growing up as a Texas Longhorns fan, [4] Dodge verbally committed to play for Mack Brown in February 2007. However, he later changed his mind, and eventually signed a letter of intent to play at University of North Texas for his father. [5] While at North Texas, he played quarterback and later moved to wide receiver. [6] In January 2010, he announced his intention to leave North Texas and enrolled at McNeese State University in Lake Charles where he had two years of eligibility left to play football. [7] His father retired from coaching after the 2021 football season. [8]

Later life

On April 16, 2013, Dodge was hired at The University of Texas as a quality control quarterbacks coach.

Dodge began his high school coaching career in February 2015, at Flower Mound Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas where he was hired as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He guided the Marauder offense for three seasons (2015-2017) whene the team posted a combined record of 17-7, and included a final state ranking of #23 in the Texas following the 2015-16 season. [9]

In April 2018, Dodge returned to Southlake to become the head coach of the Carroll football team. Dodge has led the Dragons to the state playoffs in every season since becoming the Carroll Head Coach and, in 2020, led the Dragons to the Texas UIL Class 6A Division 1 State Championship game. The Dragons finished as the 6A Division 1 state runner-up, beaten by his father's team, Austin Westlake, 52-34. In the 2021 campaign, Dodge led the Dragons to (14-1) record, losing to Duncanville in the semifinals of the 6A Division 1 state playoffs.

Westlake High School is a public high school in unincorporated territory of Travis County, Texas, west of and adjacent to Austin. The school is a part of the Eanes Independent School District. Westlake High School is the only high school in the Eanes ISD and serves West Lake Hills, Rollingwood, parts of Southwest Austin, as well as parts of unincorporated Travis County. The school was established in 1969 and opened in 1970.

Todd Russell Dodge is an American football coach and former player, and recently retired head coach at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin where he played quarterback for the Longhorns, Dodge went into coaching, primarily at the high school level. At Southlake Carroll he was head coach of four 5A state championship teams in a seven-year span. He moved on to the college level as head coach of the University of North Texas football team, but he was released after acquiring a 6–37 record. After coaching the quarterbacks at the University of Pittsburgh for the 2011 season, he returned to high school coaching in Marble Falls and Austin Westlake.

Carroll Senior High School is a public secondary school in Southlake, Texas, serving students in grades 11 and 12. The school is part of the Carroll Independent School District, serving the majority of the city of Southlake, Texas and portions of northwest Grapevine, far northern Colleyville and eastern Westlake. The building is located at 1501 W. Southlake Blvd at the intersection of S. Peytonville Avenue and Southlake Blvd.

The Oil Bowl is a high school football all-star game in Wichita Falls, Texas. The game began in 1938, originally between East and West Texas high school football all-stars. In 1945, the game began pitting teams from Oklahoma and Texas, and continued in that format until 2012. In 2013, a dispute concerning the disposition of Oklahoma's share of the game's charitable proceeds led the Oklahoma Coaches Association to withdraw from the game, and the 2013 game matched two Texas teams. For the years in which Texas and Oklahoma teams played, the overall record was 46-19-1 in favor of Texas.

The 2007 North Texas Mean Green football team represented the University of North Texas in the 2007 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The team was led by its new head coach Todd Dodge. He replaced Darrell Dickey, who was fired after going 3–9 in 2006. Dodge was regarded as one of the nation’s most successful high school football coaches amassing a 98–11 record overall at Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas. He was named National Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports in 2004 and by USA Today in 2005. His Southlake program produced five consecutive offensive players of the year in Texas. Dodge is also regarded by many FBS coaches as one of the nation's premiere offensive minds in developing a unique and effective scheme in his variation of the spread offense, in the much the same vein as Steve Spurrier and Mouse Davis. While at Southlake, Dodge helped the University of Missouri to implement his scheme.

Bret Alan Stafford is a former American football player. He started as quarterback for the Texas Longhorns for almost 2½ seasons, 1985-87 during which time he established 14 UT records, among them most passing yards in a season (2,233) in 1986, and most passing yards over a career (4,735). However, most of his records have since been surpassed by Peter Gardere, James Brown, Major Applewhite, and Vince Young.

Gary DeLoach was hired in the off-season as the new defensive coordinator replacing Ron Mendoza. The Mean Green played their home games on campus at Fouts Field in Denton, Texas.

Michael Sid Canales is an American college football coach and former player. He is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Southeastern University, positions he has held since 2023. He previously was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of North Texas, a position he held from 2010 to 2015. He became the interim head coach of the Mean Green twice, after the firing of Todd Dodge in 2010 and Dan McCarney in 2015. After a brief stint with Utah State in 2016, he was named the quarterbacks coach at the University of Tennessee in January 2017, reuniting with offensive coordinator Larry Scott, with whom he worked while at the University of South Florida. From 2018 until 2020, Canales was the offensive coordinator at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Robert Marvin Moerschell is a former American football player. He started as quarterback for the Texas Longhorns for most of the 1983 season, the last undefeated regular season for Texas in the 20th century. In 1984, he moved to tailback and punt returner when Todd Dodge took over as quarterback. He also returned punts and kickoffs in 1981 and 1982. Moerschell is the last Texas quarterback to go undefeated as a starter over his entire career and one of the school's top ten punt returners of all time.

Cecil Francis "Zeke" Martin was a college and pro athlete, high school coach, businessman and mayor from Denton, Texas. He was a two-time all-conference quarterback at North Texas State College from 1947 to 1950 and had previously started 1 game for the Texas Longhorns football team in 1944. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1951 and played professionally for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Canada during the 1951 season. He coached high school football for nearly a decade and then became a successful businessman, the mayor of Denton, Texas and a candidate for the Texas state legislature.

Samuel George Ehlinger is an American football quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). He played high school football at Westlake in Austin, Texas, where he broke various school records held by Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Drew Brees and Nick Foles, before committing to play college football at Texas. As a freshman there, Ehlinger split playing time with quarterback Shane Buechele before taking over as the starter in 2018, where he led the team to the 2018 Big 12 Championship Game and two bowl games. He was selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Quinn Tucker Ewers is an American football quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. Ewers attended Ohio State University in 2021 before transferring to Texas in 2022, where he became their starter. He is noted for being the first amateur athlete to land a Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deal worth over US$1 million.

Cade Klubnik is an American football quarterback for the Clemson Tigers.

The Southlake Carroll Dragons Football team represents Carroll Senior High School in Texas high school football at the 6A Division 2 level in the University Interscholastic League. The team plays their home games at Dragon Stadium in Southlake, Texas. Riley Dodge is the head coach and has served since 2018. Nine players from Carroll have played professionally in the NFL.
