Rising Sun Party (RIS) was a political party in the Indian state of Sikkim. The founder and president was Ram Chandra Poudyal (R. C. Poudyal) who was one of the leaders from Sikkim Congress (Revolutionary). [1]

In 1989 Sikkim Legislative Assembly election and Sikkim Lok Sabha election, RIS was one of the main rivals for the ruling party, Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP). [1] But in this Legislative Assembly election, RIS couldn’t win any seat and received only 8.59% (8.88% in seats contested) votes. In Lok Sabha election, R. C. Powdyal stood as the candidate of RIS, but he lost and couldn’t refund his deposit of candidacy.

Since 1990, RIS didn’t participate any election in Sikkim, and it isn’t registered in the list of political parties in Sikkim by Election Commission of India (ECI). [2]

Sikkim Sangram Parishad is a regional political party in the Indian state of Sikkim. In 1979, after a period of instability, a ministry headed by Nar Bahadur Bhandari from Sikkim Janata Parishad party gained power in Sikkim. In 1984, Bhandari dissolved Sikkim Janata Parishad and formed a new party called Sikkim Sangram Parishad. Sikkim Sangram Parishad held on to power in the 1984 and 1989 elections, but after that lost to Sikkim Democratic Front, which has swept the elections since 1999. Sikkim Sangram Parishad did not win any seats in the state assembly in the 2004 elections. Nar Bahadur Bhandari has merged Sikkim Sangram Parishad with the Indian National Congress and he became the president of the Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC).

Nar Bahadur Bhandari was a chief minister of the state of Sikkim in India who governed the state from 1979 to 1994. He was the founding leader of the Sikkim Sangram Parishad party. He was popularly remembered for his efforts to include the Nepali language in 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India. He was the first Indian chief minister of Gorkha origin. He also served as the president of Bharatia Nepali Bhasha Parisangh until his death. He is popularly known as the architect of modern Sikkim.

2009 Sikkim Legislative Assembly election

The Sikkim Legislative Assembly election of 2009 took place in April 2009, concurrently with the 2009 Indian general election. The elections were held in the state for all 32 legislative assembly seats along with third phase of 2009 Indian general elections on 30 April 2009. The results were declared 5 May 2009. The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) further strengthened their majority in the Sikkim Assembly by winning all the seats. Incumbent Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling's Government returned for an unprecedented fourth consecutive term having won previous elections in 1994, 1999 and 2004.
