In June 2002 The Awakening recorded its most aggressive album, Roadside Heretics. Regarding Roadside Heretics, HM Magazine wrote that "Ashton Nyte has a great understanding of the gothic aesthetic. Besides modern day mainstream breakthroughs like Trent Reznor and Marilyn Manson, The Awakening would surely make David Bowie, Peter Murphy, and Lou Reed proud... he can still make us squirm with a sensuous love song like "Cover." Iowa is the second studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. Produced by the band and Ross Robinson, it was released on August 28, 2001, by Roadrunner Records. The title derives from the band's home state, Iowa, which members have stated is one of their greatest sources of inspiration. With much anticipation for the album following the success of their 1999 self-titled debut, pressures on the band were high. Their relationships with each other suffered and this was later described as the darkest time of their career. It was also the first full album to feature guitarist Jim Root after only appearing on one song from their previous album. Despite troubles within the band and with Iowa's development, Slipknot promoted it for almost a year.

Vengeance Rising was an American Christian thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California. Fronted by vocalist Roger Martinez, they originally formed as Vengeance in 1987, but changed their name in 1989 to avoid conflict with another band from the Netherlands. Band members Larry Farkas, Doug Thieme, Roger Dale Martin, and Glen Mancaruso left following Once Dead and formed the band Die Happy. Roger Martinez stayed on to record two more studio albums, but aside from him, Vengeance Rising's lineup changed for each subsequent album. While the group was a ground breaking Christian metal band, today Vengeance Rising is known for vocalist Martinez's turning from Christianity to Satanism to atheism. Kekal is an Indonesian heavy metal and electronic music band formed in 1995 in Jakarta, Indonesia. According to AllMusic, Kekal was one of the first heavy metal bands from Indonesia to make international inroads, and according to sociologist of heavy metal, Keith Kahn-Harris, was one of the few extreme metal bands from Southeast Asia to ever make more than a minimal impression on the global scene. Finding Beauty in Chaos is the debut album by alternative rock supergroup Beauty in Chaos. The album was released on September 28, 2018. The project was created by Michael Ciravolo of Human Drama and Gene Loves Jezebel, who writes on every track excluding cover track 4. Most of the album is composed of industrial and gothic bands, with various other genres also being featured on the album. Most of the album was recorded and mixed in Ciravolo's own SAINTinLA Studio which is based in Sun Valley, Los Angeles by producer Michael Rozon.
