Rob Cook (born 7 July 1984 in Lincoln) is an English professional rugby union player who played for Premiership side Gloucester as a fullback. Former Deputy-Director of Sport and Director of Rugby at King Edward VI Grammar School Stratford-Upon-Avon. [1]

Early life

Rob Cook was born on 7 July 1984 in Lincoln, England. [1] He attended Oakham School for two years in their 6th Form. [2] In this time, he captained the rugby, cricket and football 1st teams. He won the Daily Mail Cup at Twickenham in 2002, scoring his first try in the process. [3] He attended Worcester University, where he read sports studies and played for the rugby team. [4] He gained Representative Honours with England Universities, Midlands U18s and England Counties. [5]

Club career

Cook joined Nuneaton R.F.C. in 2007. He remained with them for two seasons (2007/8 and 2008/9), making 51 first team appearances at Full Back or Fly-half and scoring 140 points. [5] [6] While at the Nuns he helped them to gain promotion to National Division Two when the club won the National Division Three North league title in 2008–09 as well as gaining selection for the England Counties XV due to his good form. [7] [8] [9]

On 7 May 2009, Cook signed for RFU Championship side Cornish Pirates. [10] Initially on the wing, he quickly moved to fly-half, before switching to full back where he remained for the rest of his Pirates tenure. [4] He was a prolific points scorer. In each of his three seasons with the club (2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12), he was their highest scoring player, accumulating over 1,000 points. [11] In 2011/12 he was named in the Championship "Dream Team" as he racked up a thousand points for the Pirates and over one hundred first team appearances. [12]

Initially linked with a move to Sale Sharks, [13] he signed a contract extension with Pirates. [14] He rescinded this deal to play in the Premiership [11] joining Gloucester Rugby in July 2012. [12] On 18 October 2013, Cook signed a two-year contract extension to stay with Gloucester until the end of the 2015–16 season. [15]

He has been known for his unusual stance before attempting a conversion or penalty. [4]

National One, up until 2023 known as National League 1 and previously known before September 2009 as National Division Two), is the third of three national leagues in the domestic rugby union competition of England. It was known as Courage League National Division Three when founded in 1987. Chinnor are the current champions.

Regional 1 Midlands is a level five semi-professional league in the English rugby union system. It is one of six leagues at this level. When this division began in 1987 it was known as Midlands Division 1. The format of the league was changed at the beginning of the 2009–10 season following a reorganisation by the Rugby Football Union (RFU), and the name change from National League 3 to Premier was introduced for the 2017–18 season by the RFU in order to lessen confusion for what is a series of regional leagues. Regional 1 Midlands is the highest regional rugby union league in the English Midlands.

South West 1 East is an English, level six, rugby union league in south and south-west England; mainly Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Gloucester, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Wiltshire. Counties Midlands 1 East (North) is a level 7 English Rugby Union league and level 2 of the Midlands League, made up of teams from the northern part of the East Midlands region including clubs from Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and the occasional team from Leicestershire, with home and away matches played throughout the season. When this division began in 1992 it was known as Midlands East 1, until it was split into two regional divisions called Midlands 3 East (North) and Midlands 3 East (South) ahead of the 2000–01 season. Further restructuring of the Midlands leagues ahead of the 2009–10 season, led to the current name of Midlands 2 East (North).

The 2011–12 RFU Championship was the third season of the second tier of the English domestic rugby union competition, played between August 2011 and May 2012. New teams to the division included Leeds Carnegie who were relegated from the Aviva Premiership 2010–11 and London Scottish who were promoted from 2010–11 National League 1. The first stage was won by Bristol and the final by London Welsh who, after an appeal, won promotion to the Aviva Premiership 2012–13. Esher were relegated to the 2012–13 National League 1.

The 2012–13 season was the Cornish Pirates tenth season in the second tier of the English rugby union league system, the RFU Championship and their fourth in the British and Irish Cup.

Penyrn RFC is a Cornish rugby union club based in the town of Penryn, and is the oldest club side in the county having been formed in 1872. The men's first team play in Counties 1 Western West - a league at level 7 of the English rugby union system - having been promoted from Cornwall/Devon as champions at the end of the 2018–19 season. Matthew Shepherd is an English and Cornish rugby union player who currently plays at scrum-half or full back for Redruth in National League 2 South, having previously played for Plymouth Albion in National League 1. An extremely reliable points scorer with a knack for scoring important tries, he was instrumental in Cornwall's County Championship victories in 2015 and 2016 and has also been capped by England Counties XV. As well as playing union, Shepherd has played summer rugby league for the Cornish Rebels.

Truro RFC is a Cornish rugby union club based in the city of Truro and was formed in 1885. The club's colours are blue and gold and they operate two senior men's teams, a women's team, a colts side and various mini/junior teams. The men's first team currently play in Regional 2 South West – a league at level 6 in the English rugby union system.

The RFU Junior Vase is a rugby union national knockout cup competition in England run by the Rugby Football Union, which has been competed for since 1990. It is mostly contested by 1st XV teams at level 9 of the English rugby union system, although sides as low as level 12 or even outside the league system can sometimes enter. The competition is a national one, but split into regions until the national semi-finals with the final being held at Twickenham Stadium in London. Presently, the RFU Junior Vase is the fifth most important club cup competition in England, behind the Premiership Rugby Cup, RFU Championship Cup, RFU Intermediate Cup and RFU Senior Vase.
