The 1956 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVI Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event held in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, from 22 November to 8 December 1956, with the exception of the equestrian events, which were held in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 1956.
Lake Wendouree is an artificially created and maintained shallow urban lake located adjacent to the suburb of the same name in the city of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The name Wendouree comes from a local Aboriginal word wendaaree which means 'go away': a story is told that when settler William Cross Yuille asked a local Indigenous woman what the name of the swamp was, that was her reply.

The Stawell Gift is Australia's oldest and richest short-distance running race. John Russell Welchli was an American rower. He was a member of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Team at the 1956 Summer Olympics, Melbourne, Australia. Welchli rowing out of the Detroit Boat Club won a silver medal at the 1956 Olympics in the four without coxswain event along with DBC teammates James McIntosh and identical twin brothers John McKinlay and Art McKinlay. In 1956 the Detroit Boat Club coached by Walter M. Hoover placed seven oarsman on the US Olympic Rowing Team winning 2 silver medals the other being in the double sculls event crewed by Pat Costello and James Gardiner. The seventh member of the 1956 team was alternate Walter Hoover Jr.The seven 1956 Detroit Boat Club Olympic oarsman are known as the "DBC Seven." Welchli also won a combined 32 Canadian and U.S. national gold medals during his distinguished career. Welchli was a Master Senior Sculler competing up until 2010 and is considered one of the all-time great American scullers.
Robert Francis "Choc" Bignall, commonly referred to as Bob Bignall, was an Australian soccer player who was the Australia captain at the 1956 Olympic Games held in Melbourne, Australia. Bignall started his career in 1939 and played over 400 matches in NSW for Corrimal Rangers, Woonona, North Shore and South Coast United as a defender before going on to represent both NSW and national sides as captain in the 1950s. He was inducted to the Football Federation of Australia Hall of Fame in 1999.
Robert Allen "Bob" Gutowski was an American athlete who competed mainly in the pole vault. He competed for the United States in the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia in the Pole Vault where he won the silver medal behind Bob Richards' second consecutive gold medal, after finishing fourth in the US Olympic Trials and only getting to the games on the withdrawal of Jim Graham.

Robert L. Simpson was a professional Canadian football player for the Ottawa Rough Riders, and was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1976. He was an IRFU all-star at four different positions throughout his career and was a two-time Grey Cup champion, winning with Ottawa in 1951 and 1960. He also represented Canada in basketball at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki.

Peter Grant Blackburn is an Australian badminton player who affiliated with the Ballarat Badminton Association. He competed at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics, and collected four bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games. Blackburn graduated from the Ballarat University College with a Diploma in Teaching in 1991. He was awarded the Hollioake Medallion in 1991, 1994 and 1995 for his outstanding contribution to sport in the City of Ballarat, and in 1999 he was named Ballarat Sportsperson of the Year.
Hempala Premachandra "Henry" Jayasuriya was a Sri Lankan boxer. He competed in the men's bantamweight event at the 1956 Summer Olympics. At the 1956 Summer Olympics, he lost to Robert Bath of Australia. Jayasuriya is deceased.
Robert Munro Moir was a Canadian television producer, sports commentator, and journalist. He covered the Canadian Football League for the Winnipeg Free Press from 1948 to 1958, then worked more than 40 years for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) beginning in 1952. He was a play-by-play commentator for football games broadcast on CBC Sports from 1957 to 1963, and was the first secretary-treasurer of Football Reporters of Canada. He reported for CBC Sports at the 1972 Summer Olympics, and sneaked into the Olympic Village during the Munich massacre to give live reports. As the executive producer for coverage of the 1976 Summer Olympics, he expanded coverage by CBC Sports from 14 to 169 hours, introduced live interviews with athletes after events, and established the model used for future coverage of the Olympics. His later work for CBC Sports included the executive-producer of Canadian Football League broadcasts, the Commonwealth Games, the Summer and Winter Olympics, and the World Figure Skating Championships. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and the CBC Sports Hall of Fame, and was named to the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association roll of honour.
