Robert Oscar Lopez (born 1971) is a former American academic. He was most recently a professor of humanities at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. [1]

Early life

Robert Oscar Lopez is of Puerto Rican descent. [2] Additionally, he is "the descendant of African slaves." [2]

Lopez graduated from Yale University in 1993, where he received a bachelor of arts degree. [3] He holds an English PhD from State University of New York at Buffalo. [3] [4] He received a master's degree in classics from SUNY-Buffalo in 2007. [3]

Career

Lopez joined the faculty at California State University, Northridge in 2008. [3] He became a tenured associate professor of English and Classics in 2013, [3] and, in July 2013, it was announced he would self-publish "Mean Gays" fiction books. [5]

In 2012, he published the essay "Growing up with two Moms", detailing his experiences growing up as son of a lesbian couple. [6] This resulted in an immediate backlash in blogs, with some calling it hate speech. [6] He also ran a blog where he was accused of homophobia for comparing gay parents to slave owners and same-sex adoption to "the cultural genocide practices once used against blacks and Indians." [7]

Lopez was accused by two former students for creating a discriminatory environment. [6] In October 2015, the CSUN provost wrote a letter informing Lopez that he was accused of intimidating students. [6] [8] Meanwhile, Lopez accused another administrator of comparing an event he had organized at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to a "KKK camp." [9] The event that he had organized at the library was actually the initial meeting of his International Children's Rights Institute, and photos of the event were used for the web site. [10]

Lopez founded the International Children's Rights Institute in 2014, and he served as its president until it quietly shut down in early 2017. [3] The institute's closure was followed by accusations that one of its members, Katy Faust, had illegally lobbied against gay marriage in Australia and Taiwan. [11] He testified against same-sex marriage in Minnesota. [5] He wrote an amicus curiae brief for the Supreme Court in the Obergefell vs. Hodges case about same-sex marriage. [12] [13]

In 2016, Lopez resigned his position at CSUN and later became Professor of Humanities at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. [14] In November 2019, according to Southwestern, Lopez's position was eliminated due to changing program needs of Scarborough College. However, Southwestern's decision was undergirded by Lopez's actions, which included failure to comply with basic administrative policies, being the subject of regular complaints from students and faculty colleagues, and, in the end, refusal to attend meetings with his supervisors. [15] In contrast, Lopez claimed that Southwestern administrators fired him for his refusal to cut back on his rhetoric after having reprimanded him earlier for talking almost incessantly about homosexuality. [16]

Personal life

According to Inside Higher Ed , he "identifies as bisexual." [6] His biography at CSUN says he has been married to his wife, Mijeong Park, since 2001 and they have two children. [3] According to his wife's biography from the International Children's Rights Institute website, she is a specialist in Asian-American literature and Korean literature and film. [17] Lopez is a member of the Southern Baptist Convention. [3]

B. H. Carroll Theological Institute is an accredited Christian Baptist institution in Irving, Texas with multiple sources of funding and a self-perpetuating board of governors. It is named after Benajah Harvey Carroll and teaches Baptist principles and practices. It operates in cooperation primarily with Baptist churches, and also cooperates with other Great Commission Christians. The institution offers classes in both conventional classroom settings and by innovative means. It trains students in "“teaching churches” located in multiple Texas cities, as well as through interactive lessons taught over the Internet", with 20 such "teaching churches" in operation throughout Texas as of November 2006. The school plans to focus on the use of distance education to make it easier for students to obtain theological education. As of 2006, the school's second year of operation, B. H. Carroll Theological Institute had 300 students taking courses and an additional 300 students auditing courses. Bruce Corley was Carroll's first president; Gene Wilkes is Carroll's second president.

The "Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience" is a manifesto issued by Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, and evangelical Christian leaders to affirm support of "the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and religious liberty". It was drafted on October 20, 2009, and released November 20, 2009, having been signed by more than 150 American religious leaders. On the issue of marriage, the declaration objects not only to same-sex marriage but also to the general erosion of the "marriage culture" with the specter of divorce, greater acceptance of infidelity and the uncoupling of marriage from childbearing.
