Robert A. Schadler [1] is an American politician and businessman who served as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates for the 49th district from 1988 to 1992 and again from 1998 to 2010. Schadler represented a district that includes Mineral County.
Schadler earned an associate degree from the Potomac State College of West Virginia University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia University. He also received a license in mortuary science. [2]
Prior to entering politics,Schadler worked as a mortician and florist. During his tenure in the West Virginia House of Delegates,Schadler was the vice chair of the Health and Human Resources Committee.
As a member of the Mineral County Republican Executive Committee,Schadler,campaigned for Democrat candidates in violation of party rules. He was subsequently removed from his position for the violation. He then sued in Circuit Court to have the decision overturned and lost his case. [3] Upon appeal the lower courts decision allowing his removal was upheld by a 5–0 decision of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. In 2010,Schadler was mentioned as a possible candidate for Mineral County circuit clerk. [4]
The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia is the state supreme court of the state of West Virginia,the highest of West Virginia's state courts. The court sits primarily at the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston,although from 1873 to 1915,it was also required by state law to hold sessions in Charles Town in the state's Eastern Panhandle. The court also holds special sittings at various locations across the state.

West Virginia statutes do not address discrimination on account of sexual orientation or gender identity;however,the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County established that employment discrimination against LGBTQ people is illegal.
Same-sex marriage has been legally recognized in West Virginia since October 9,2014. On July 28,2014,a ruling by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Bostic v. Schaefer found Virginia's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. On October 6,2014,the U.S. Supreme Court denied certiorari in Bostic,allowing the ruling to take effect. As a result,on October 9,2014,Governor Earl Ray Tomblin announced he was ordering state agencies to act in compliance with the controlling precedent in the Virginia case. Even though West Virginia's ban had not been explicitly declared unconstitutional,the Fourth Circuit precedent made it certain the state's statutory ban would be overturned. The state started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples that same day. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia officially ruled the state's same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional on November 7,2014.
Jack Robert Nuzum (1921–1998) served several years as Circuit Judge representing Randolph County in Elkins,West Virginia from 1976–1991. Prior to that,he was also a legislator,for Taylor County,West Virginia and then,neighboring Randolph County,West Virginia in the West Virginia Legislature as a member of the House of Delegates. After retirement from the judicial bench,Nuzum served as a Senior Judge for the State of West Virginia's Supreme Court System,occasionally being named to act in the place of other circuit judges when necessary. For many years,Jack R. Nuzum was a law partner of former West Virginia Governor Herman G. Kump in the Elkins law firm of Kump,Kump,and Nuzum. Herman Guy Kump was the 19th Governor of the state of West Virginia.

Elizabeth D. "Beth" Walker is an American lawyer and jurist serving as a justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals since 2017. She was elected in the Court's first non-partisan election on May 10,2016. She began a 12-year term on January 1,2017. Walker is the 77th justice to serve on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. She was an unsuccessful candidate for the same office in 2008. She has served as chief justice in 2019 and 2023.

The impeachment of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia occurred on August 13,2018,when the West Virginia House of Delegates voted to impeach all five justices of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia for charges relating to corruption,overspending,and lack of oversight. Despite being threatened in other states at other times,this is the only time in United States history that the entire bench of the highest court of a state has been impeached.
