Rock gegen Rechts is the motto of concerts and festivals held irregularly against far-right politics as a form of political demonstration in Germany and Austria. Udo Lindenberg called his events Rock gegen rechte Gewalt (Rock against far-right violence). Other names for such events have included Wir sind mehr in Chemnitz in 2018.
The first Rock gegen Rechts festival was held on 16 June 1979 in Frankfurt in response to a Germany-wide event (Deutschlandtreffen) of the Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands (NPD). It was inspired by the British Rock Against Racism.
The festival took place at the Rebstockgelände , a former airport, organized by the Communist League. [1] It was directed against a meeting and demonstration of the NPD, planned for the same day, similar to one which had attracted 3,000 people to march through the centre of Frankfurt the previous year. The festival was permitted, while a demonstration initiated by the DGB was forbidden. However, 40,000 people ignored the ban and demonstrated, which was tolerated by the police and went peacefully. [2] Visitors reached the festival in a Sternmarsch , a demonstration march from different starting points. 50,000 people listened to music by the Bots from the Netherlands, Schmetterlinge from Vienna, Misty from England, Guru Guru, Octopus, the Michael Sagmeister Trio, Strassenjungs and Missus Beastly, among others.
The festival's success led to further concerts throughout Germany. A second festival was held at the same location a year later on 16 and 17 June 1980. Beginning in the 1990s, the motto "Rock gegen Rechts" was also used for smaller political festivals. Udo Lindenberg named his events Rock gegen rechte Gewalt (Rock against far-right violence).
On 2 December 2011, Udo Lindenberg, Sigmar Gabriel and the town of Jena organised a rock concert against the far-right terror of the Nationalsozialistischer Untergrund (NSU) and their supporters. Called Rock 'n' Roll-Arena Jena – Für die bunte Republik Deutschland (For the colourful German Republic), it attracted 50,000 people. Performers included, besides Lindenberg, Peter Maffay, Julia Neigel, Silly and Clueso. [3]
The first such concert in Düsseldorf was held on 3 August 2013 at the Volksgarten , with free admission. In the last several years, performers have included Radio Havanna, Sidi Wacho and Rotfront. [4]
The stabbing of a man in Chemnitz on 26 August 2018 led to demonstrations against immigrants, involving around 6,000 people in xenophobic riots. A concert was organised, conceived as a counter demonstration and titled "Wir sind mehr" (We are more). The local band Kraftklub played for around 65,000 listeners, with artists including Die Toten Hosen, Casper, Feine Sahne Fischfilet, K.I.Z, Marteria, Nura and Trettmann. [5]
The National Democratic Party of Germany is a far-right and Neo-Nazi political party in Germany.
Böhse Onkelz, sensational spelling of böse Onkel is a German rock band formed in Frankfurt in 1980. The band reunited in 2014. Despite mass-media criticism concerning their past as skinheads, several of their later records topped the German album charts. E.I.N.S. was their most successful album, with over 510,000 copies sold.

Udo Voigt is a German politician and former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the far-right and Neo-Nazi party National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) between 2014 and 2019. He was a member of the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. He served as leader of NPD from 1996 to 2011. By profession, he is a former captain in the German Air Force and has a master's degree in political science from LMU. Voigt has in recent years become a strong supporter of Vladimir Putin and has said that Germany should have "a chancellor like Putin."
Sahra Wagenknecht is a German left-wing politician, economist, author and publicist. Along with Dietmar Bartsch, she was the parliamentary chairperson of The Left from 2010 to 2019. Since 2009, she has been a member of the Bundestag.
Staubkind is a German pop rock band from Berlin, founded in 2004 by Sven Louis Manke. Initially, Staubkind were a dark rock act with a similar sound to other German acts like Zeraphine and maybe Dreadful Shadows. Since the release of their third album Staubkind in 2012, their sound has become more Unheilig-oriented, incorporating pop rock, indie and modern schlager music to their sound. All of their lyrics are written in German.
Udo Pastörs is a German politician and convicted Holocaust denier. He is the former leader of the far-right NPD, and served as a representative in the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The Anti-WAAhnsinns Festivals were political rock concerts, which took place in Germany in the 1980s. Their purpose was to support protests against the planned nuclear reprocessing plant Wackersdorf in Wackersdorf. In 1986, the fifth festival marked the peak of the protest movement against the plant. With over 100,000 people attending on July 26 and 27, Burglengenfeld became the venue of the until then-largest rock concert in the history of Germany. The line-up included some of Germany's most popular music acts of the time such as BAP, Die Toten Hosen, Udo Lindenberg, Rio Reiser, Herbert Grönemeyer. The festivals resulted in an unexpected amount of media coverage for the anti-nuclear movement in Germany. Contrary to expectations of government agencies, however, the festival remained completely peaceful. As a result of the overwhelming protests the planned nuclear reprocessing plant was never built.
Autonome Nationalisten are German, British, Dutch and to a lesser degree Flemish neo-Nazis, who have adopted some of the far-left and Antifa's organizational concepts, demonstration tactics, symbolism, and elements of clothing, including Che Guevara T-shirts and keffiyehs. Similar groups have also appeared in some central and eastern European countries, beginning with Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Romania and Greece and others.
Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamicisation of the Occident, abbreviated Pegida, is a pan-European, anti-Islam, far-right political movement. German Pegida believes that Germany is being increasingly Islamicised and defines itself in opposition to Islamic extremism.
Götz Kubitschek is a German publisher, journalist and far-right political activist. Kubitschek espouses ethnocentric positions and is one of the most important protagonists of the Neue Rechte in Germany. Hailing from the staff of right-wing newspaper Junge Freiheit, Kubitschek is one of the founders of the Neue Rechte think tank Institut für Staatspolitik. Since 2002, he is the manager of his self-founded publishing house Antaios, since 2003 chief editor of the journal Sezession, as well as editor of the corresponding blog Sezession im Netz.

There are three kinds of subcultures within far-right movements to distinguish: subcultural parasitism, subcultural creation around ideology and subcultures that are networking with far-right movements, as some football hooligans did with neo-nazis.
The 2018 Chemnitz protests took place in Chemnitz, in the German state of Saxony. In the early morning of 26 August, after a festival celebrating the city's founding, a fight broke out resulting in the death of a Cuban-German man and serious injuries to two other people. Two Kurdish immigrants, one from Iraq and the other from Syria, were named as suspects. The incident reignited the tensions surrounding immigration to Germany, which had been ongoing since 2015, and the European migrant crisis. In response, mass protests against immigration were ignited by groups of German civilians. The protests spawned riots and were followed by counter-demonstrations.

Birlikte is the name and motto of a series of semi-annual rallies and corresponding cultural festivals against right-wing extremist violence in Germany, which first took place on 9 June 2014 in Cologne. The term "birlikte" is Turkish and means "together".
Arsch huh, Zäng ussenander is the motto and name of a campaign against right-wing violence in Cologne, Germany. The colloquial slogan in the local dialect Kölsch literally means "Ass up, teeth apart!" encouraging people to not look away but to stand up, speak out and take action against racism and injustice.
The Sogenanntes Linksradikales Blasorchester was a wind band founded in 1976 in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany, with a political program. It performed at protest demonstrations, Rock gegen Rechts, and the Russell Tribunal, among others. The professionals Heiner Goebbels, Alfred Harth, and Rolf Riehm were founders and regular players of the band, which made two recordings that were re-released in 1999. The group disbanded in 1981.
PC Records is a German Neo-Nazi music label. The label is an artistic outlet for the Chemnitz Neo-Nazi scene and one of the most active of the far-right and "Rock Against Communism" music scene in Germany. PC Records is releasing some of the most regionally popular Neo-Nazi bands. Several of the albums released by the label have been indexed for Neo-Fascist content. The label includes a shop and a mailorder business. The name "PC" refers to the phrase "Political Correctness, no thanks!"

Shortly after protests seeking justice for George Floyd, an African American who was murdered during a police arrest, began in the United States, the people of Germany also began to protest to show solidarity with the Americans. Many also called on the German police to address its own racist practices and use of violence.
