Rogue Ales is a brewery founded in 1988 in Ashland, Oregon. Rogue has pub locations in Oregon. [1]
Rogue Ales was founded in Ashland, Oregon in 1988 by three Nike, Inc. executives: Jack Joyce, Rob Strasser, and Bob Woodell. [2]
In 1987, Jack Joyce, Bob Woodell, past University of Oregon fraternity brothers, and another friend, Rob Strasser, were approached by Jeff Schultz, Woodell's accountant and avid home brewer, with an idea to open a brewpub.
Construction began in June 1988 in Ashland, along the Lithia Creek. The 10 bbl brew system was set up in the basement with a 60-seat Pub above. The first brews were American Amber Ale, Oregon Golden Ale and Shakespeare Stout. The Brewery and Pub opened in October 1988 to moderate success and soon, the company started looking to expand.
In February 1989, construction began on the Bay Front Brew Pub in Newport, Oregon. In March, John Maier, a former Hughes Aircraft F15 designer and Seibel Institute graduate, joined the company. Mair was previously a brewer at Alaskan Brewing before he was recruited by Joyce. [3] The pub opened in May 1989. Rogue now has eleven locations dispersed throughout Oregon, Washington, and California. [4]
Rogue has sponsored the annual surfing event "The Gathering Longboard Classic" on Newport's South Beach. [5] [6]
At the end of 2018 Brett Joyce, (Jack Joyce's son) stepped down as company president and was replaced by general manager Dharma Tamm. Joyce retains an ownership stake and remains on the board. [7]
Brewmaster John C. Maier joined the company in 1989 from Alaskan Brewing. [8] Rogue has produced more than 60 different ales. The company uses a proprietary yeast known as "Pacman". [8] [9]
Maier says that all of their beers are meant to go with food, and the company has worked with chefs, [10] brewing industry experts, [11] and restaurateurs. [12] [13] [14] [15]
Maier stepped down as brewmaster in July 2019, [16] and was replaced by Joel Shields. [17]
Rogue has collaborated on brewing beers with Rogue Creamery, Portland State, Voodoo Doughnut, Dark Horse Comics, [18] and others. The brewery released Hot Sriracha Stout in 2013, made with the sauce of the same name. [19]
The brewery once created a beer using a strain of yeast found in Brewmaster Maier's beard, known as their Beard Beer.
Rogue has entered contests held by the Brewers Association multiple times, and has received several medals. Rogue has entered both the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) and the World Beer Cup (WBC). [20] [21]
In 2011, a group of employees from the Rogue Brewery in Newport, Oregon were unsuccessful in their attempt to unionize. Rogue was accused at the time for union-busting tactics at their Newport brewery, and has been questioned for their salary standards. [22]
Rogue's Eugene Public House and Track Town Brewery was shut down in 2014. According to Northwest Brewing News, this was at least in part also due to Rogue's "cheapskate management tactics". [23] Rogue reportedly refused to let the brewers have an assistant, and some brewers were forced to carry heavy loads and spend their own money to work within the company's dollar-per-keg budget limits. In July 2015, company president Brett Joyce dismissed those with complaints as having "an ax to grind". [24]

Full Sail Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Hood River, Oregon, United States. Founded in 1987, Full Sail was the first commercially successful craft brewery to bottle beer in the Pacific Northwest for retail sale, and one of Oregon's early microbreweries. The first beer packaged was Full Sail Golden Ale, followed in 1988 by Full Sail Imperial Porter, Full Sail Amber Ale, and Wassail Winter Ale.
Genesee Brewing Company is an American brewery located along the Genesee River in Rochester, New York. From 2000 to 2009, the company was known as the High Falls Brewing Company. In 2009, High Falls was acquired by the capital investment firm KPS Capital. Together with newly acquired Labatt USA, KPS merged the two companies as North American Breweries. Along with this change, High Falls Brewery changed its name back to the original "Genesee Brewing Company" operating under the North American Breweries name. In October 2012, North American Breweries was purchased by FIFCO.

As of 2016, Deschutes was the eighth-largest craft brewery and fifteenth-largest overall brewery in the U.S., producing 250,000 US beer barrels (290,000 hL) in 2012.
AleSmith Brewing Company is an American craft brewery located in San Diego, California. It specializes in handcrafted ales in a variety of styles. As of 2015 it produces about 25,000 barrels of beer a year.
BridgePort Brewing Company was a brewery in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. It operated from 1984 until 2019. Brewery operations ceased in February 2019, and the brew pub closed on March 10, 2019.

Avery Brewing Company is a regional brewery located in Boulder, Colorado, founded in 1993. Begun as a homebrewing store in 1983, and producing beer since 1985, it is the oldest existing craft brewery in Michigan and the oldest craft brewery east of Colorado. As of 2021, it was the 6th largest craft brewery in the United States, and was the largest independently owned brewery in Michigan when founder Larry Bell sold the company to the subsidiary of the Japanese Kirin beverage group, Lion - an Australian producer of alcoholic beverages, at the end of 2021. Jack Joyce was an American business executive, lawyer who co-founded Rogue Ales in Ashland, Oregon, in 1988. The Portland Business Journal has called Joyce, "One of the men most responsible for Oregon's reputation as one of the nation's preeminent beer-making regions." Joyce was also one of the original executives at Nike during the company's early years. Rogue Ales was producing 105,000 barrels by 2013, ranking it among the top twenty-five craft breweries in the United States.
Brewmaster Matt Cole partnered with Glenn Benigni, owner of Fat Head's Saloon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to open Fat Head's Brewery & Saloon in Cleveland, Ohio in 2009, with Cole supplying beer to the Pittsburgh location. A production brewery opened in Middleburg Heights, Ohio in March 2012 and another brewpub location opened in Portland, Oregon in November 2014, which has since closed. Fat Head's is known for their signature beers Head Hunter IPA and Bumble Berry Honey Blueberry Ale.
Rogue Ales Beard Beer is an American wild ale brewed by Rogue Ales of Newport, Oregon using wild yeast originally cultured from nine beard hairs belonging to Rogue Ales' brewmaster, John Maier.
Experimental beer is beer that is produced in or as a new style, using a new recipe, or as a type of beer that does not fit within present beer style criteria or definitions. The term also encompasses minor beer styles that are not covered under any of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) categories, with the exception of Belgian beers. Such minor beer styles may serve "as an incubator" for new potential categories, and may attain an official category if the style becomes of interest to the general public at a sufficient level. The Great American Beer Festival has an experimental beer category as a part of its competition, for which awards are given, as does the World Beer Cup, which also provides awards for beers in this category. The Oregon State Fair has a home brew competition that includes a category for specialty and experimental beers.
