Rohit Bhaker (born 26 October 1984) is an Indian deaf badminton player. [1]

Biography

Rohit Bhaker was born profoundly deaf and he has the inability to speak. He is from Bhiwani and is currently residing in Bhiwani for badminton practices and works in HVPNL. [2] In 1997 for his achievement in his debut Deaflympic event (1997), he was awarded the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement, an Indian national award to child artists who perform exception achievements in any field. He also received Arjuna Award for his efforts in the sport of badminton. [3]

Career

Rohit made his Deaflympic debut in the 1997 Summer Deaflympics at the age of just twelve and was a member of the Indian badminton team which won the gold medal in the mixed team event, which also featured Rajeev Bagga. [4] This achievement made him the youngest male medalist at the Deaflympic history (12 years, 8 months and 17 days) and also became the youngest gold medalist in the history of Deaflympics. [5]

Rohit Bhaker too claimed bronze medals in the men's singles and mixed team events as a part of the 2005 Summer Deaflympics. [6] [7]

He is often compared to Rajeev Bagga, a fellow Indian deaf badminton player who has clinched 12 gold medals at the Deaflympics.

Shi Ce is a Chinese deaf female table tennis player. She has represented China at the Deaflympics four times from 2005 to 2017. Shi Ce has been regarded as one of the finest athletes to have represented China at the Deaflympics, having won 14 medals at the event since making her debut in the 2005 Summer Deaflympics.

Barbara Oddone is a former Italian deaf female tennis player. She has represented Italy at the Deaflympics from 1989 to 2013. Oddone has won a total of 18 medals at the Deaflympics, which enlightens the career best performance by any Italian player at the Deaflympic history.

In the 2015 Winter Deaflympics she created history after winning gold medals in all five events such as giant slalom, super combined, slalom, downhill and Super-G.

Gergana Stoyanova Baramova is a Bulgarian female badminton player. She is profoundly deaf and has mainly competed at the Deaflympics and World Deaf Badminton Championships.

Alexandra Polivanchuk is a Swedish female deaf swimmer who is also the twin sister of Anna Polivanchuk. She has represented Sweden at the Deaflympics in 2005, 2009 and 2013. She currently holds the deaf world swimming records in 50m and 100m butterfly events. She graduated and has been training the sport of swimming at the Gallaudet University.
