Roman Patrick Banks is a former American basketball coach and the current athletic director at Southern University. [1] Banks previously served as the head men's basketball coach for the Southern Jaguars before he was promoted to AD on March 31, 2017. [2]

The South Alabama Jaguars represent the University of South Alabama in NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics. USA competes in the Sun Belt Conference; it is the conference's only remaining charter member from its inception. USA's athletics teams are nicknamed the Jaguars. Ben W. Jobe was an American basketball coach. He was best known as the head coach of the Southern University Jaguars – a position he held for 12 years. He has also been head coach of the men's college basketball teams at Tuskegee University, Talladega College, Alabama State University, South Carolina State University, University of Denver and Alabama A&M University. Jobe has also served as assistant coach at the University of South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and briefly served as an assistant with the NBA's Denver Nuggets.

The 2012–13 Southern Jaguars basketball team represented Southern University during the 2012–13 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Jaguars, led by second year head coach Roman Banks, played their home games at the F. G. Clark Center and were members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 23–10, 15–3 in SWAC play to finish in a tie for second place. They were champions of the SWAC tournament to earn an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA tournament where they lost in the second round to Gonzaga.

The 2013–14 Southern Jaguars basketball team represented Southern University during the 2013–14 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Jaguars, led by third year head coach Roman Banks, played their home games at the F. G. Clark Center and were members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 19–13, 15–3 in SWAC play to win the regular season conference championship. They were ineligible for postseason play due to APR penalties. However, the SWAC received a waiver to allow its teams under APR penalties to still participate in the SWAC tournament where the Jaguars lost in the quarterfinals to Prairie View A&M.

The 2014–15 Southern Jaguars basketball team represented Southern University during the 2014–15 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Jaguars, led by fourth year head coach Roman Banks, played their home games at the F. G. Clark Center and were members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 18–17, 13–5 in SWAC play to finish in third place. They advanced to the championship game of the SWAC tournament where they lost to Texas Southern. Had they won the SWAC Tournament, they would not have qualified for the NCAA Tournament due to a postseason ban due to failing to supply usable academic data to the NCAA.

The 2015–16 Southern Jaguars basketball team represented Southern University during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Jaguars, led by fifth year head coach Roman Banks, played their home games at the F. G. Clark Center and were members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 22–13, 11–7 in SWAC play to finish in fourth place. They defeated Alabama State, Texas Southern, and Jackson State to be champions of the SWAC tournament. They earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the First Four to Holy Cross.

Due to Grambling State's Academic Progress Rate violations and subsequent postseason ineligibility, the Jaguars received the No. 4 seed in the SWAC tournament. They defeated Jackson State in the quarterfinals before losing to Arkansas–Pine Bluff in the semifinals.

Melvyn J. Garland was an American basketball coach and player. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he emerged as a star dual-sport athlete in basketball and baseball at Arsenal Technical High School. Garland attended Purdue University and played for the Boilermakers on the basketball and baseball teams. He was a member of all-conference teams in both sports but excelled at basketball, where he was an Honorable Mention All-American during his junior season.
