Boris Strel was a Slovenian alpine skier. He was born in Žiri, Slovenia. In December 1981, Strel took the only Slovenian top-level win in men's giant slalom in the 1982 Alpine Skiing World Cup competition in Cortina d'Ampezzo. He ended his career after the 1984/85 season due to problems with his spine and was later active as a ski school and a ski repair shop owner. Strel committed suicide on 28 March 2013.
Ivar Valentin Johansson was a Swedish wrestler who competed at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Summer Olympics. In 1932 he won the gold medal in the Greco-Roman welterweight and freestyle middleweight events. Four years later he won the gold medal in the Greco-Roman middleweight competition.
The Marshall Islands took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics, which were held in Beijing, China from 8 to 24 August 2008. The 2008 Summer Olympics were the Marshall Islands' first appearance at the Olympics. The delegation included five athletes, two in athletics, two in swimming, and one in taekwondo. The Marshall Islands failed to win an Olympic medal at these Games.
In the mathematical theory of knots, the Perko pair, named after Kenneth Perko, is a pair of entries in classical knot tables that actually represent the same knot. In Dale Rolfsen's knot table, this supposed pair of distinct knots is labeled 10161 and 10162. In 1973, while working to complete the classification by knot type of the Tait–Little knot tables of knots up to 10 crossings (dating from the late 19th century), Perko found the duplication in Charles Newton Little's table. This duplication had been missed by John Horton Conway several years before in his knot table and subsequently found its way into Rolfsen's table. The Perko pair gives a counterexample to a "theorem" claimed by Little in 1900 that the writhe of a reduced diagram of a knot is an invariant (see Tait conjectures), as the two diagrams for the pair have different writhes.
Sister Double Happiness was an alternative blues rock band that existed from 1986 until 1995, formed in San Francisco, CA, United States. Its core members were Gary Floyd and Lynn Perko, who were in the seminal punk rock band The Dicks, and Ben Cohen of the Pop-O-Pies.
Rok Perko is a former Slovenian alpine ski racer. He was born in Kranj, and specialized in downhill, super-G and combined.
Tom Perko was a former American football linebacker who played in the National Football League (NFL). He graduated from Steubenville Catholic Central High School in 1972, was a member of the school's 1971 state championship team, and was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 1976 NFL Draft and played that season with the team. He was killed in a car accident in February 2, 1980.
Anișoara Dobre-Bălan is a Romanian rower. Competing in quadruple sculls she won two Olympic medals, in 1988 and 1992, and three world championship medals, in 1985, 1986 and 1991. She also won the world title in women's eight in 1989. Her sister Doina Șnep-Bălan is married to Ioan Snep; both are Olympic rowers. The sisters often competed at the same tournament but in different crews.
Doina Robu is a retired Romanian rower who won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics. She also won two gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the world championships between 1986 and 1993. She is married to the Olympic rower Valentin Robu. She competed at the 1990 World Rowing Championships under her married name.
Aapo Kustaa Perko was a Finnish shot putter who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics. Perko died on 13 December 2021, at the age of 97.
Ludvig Dornig was a Slovenian alpine skier. He competed in three events at the 1956 Winter Olympics, representing Yugoslavia. He died in 1996 and his grandson is Slovenian tennis player Blaž Kavčič.
Mike Perko is a former American football defensive tackle. He played for the Atlanta Falcons in 1982 and for the Birmingham Stallions from 1984 to 1985.
