Rommie E. Amaro is a professor and endowed chair of chemistry and biochemistry and the director of the National Biomedical Computation Resource at the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on development of computational methods in biophysics for applications to drug discovery. [1] [2]

Early life and education

Amaro grew up in Chicago and obtained her bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1999. She spent two years as a research engineer at Kraft Foods before returning to UIUC for graduate school; she received a Ph.D. in chemistry in 2005 for work with Zaida Luthey-Schulten on computational biophysics. During her graduate work, she also helped develop National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Macromolecular Modeling and Bioinformatics workshops. After graduation she became a postdoctoral fellow with Andrew McCammon at University of California, San Diego on an NIH Kirschstein-National Research Service Award (NRSA) postdoctoral fellowship. Academic career

Amaro joined the faculty at University of California, Irvine in 2009, with partial appointments in the departments of pharmaceutical sciences, computer science, and chemistry. She received an NIH Director's New Innovator Award in 2010 and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2010. [1] She returned to UCSD in 2012 in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She was the director of UCSD's National Biomedical Computation Resource from 2014-2020. [1] [5] She served as co-Director of the Drug Design Data Resource (D3R). [6]

Amaro's work has emphasized the utility of GPU computing for methods development for molecular simulation. She was awarded a research grant by NVIDIA in 2013 to continue development for the CUDA platform. [7] [8]

Amaro is also active in public outreach and science communication; a high-school student she co-mentored won the 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, the 2013 Google Science Fair, and the 2014 Intel Science Talent Search. [9]

Jeffrey David Esko, Ph.D.,M.D. (h.c) is currently a Distinguished Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Co-Director of the Glycobiology Research and Training Center at the University of California, San Diego. His research has focuses on understanding the structure, biosynthesis and biological roles of proteoglycans in mammalian cells and model organisms. Esko popularized proteoglycans through his pioneering genetic and functional studies in cells and model organisms. He discovered the dependence of tumor formation on heparan sulfate, the first small molecule inhibitors of heparan sulfate, the action of proteoglycans as receptors for hepatic lipoprotein clearance and for delivery of therapeutic agents. SAMPL is a set of community-wide blind challenges aimed to advance computational techniques as standard predictive tools in rational drug design. A broad range of biologically relevant systems with different sizes and levels of complexities including proteins, host–guest complexes, and drug-like small molecules have been selected to test the latest modeling methods and force fields in SAMPL. New experimental data, such as binding affinity and hydration free energy, are withheld from participants until the prediction submission deadline, so that the true predictive power of methods can be revealed. The most recent SAMPL5 challenge contains two prediction categories: the binding affinity of host–guest systems, and the distribution coefficients of drug-like molecules between water and cyclohexane. Since 2008, the SAMPL challenge series has attracte interest from scientists engaged in the field of computer-aided drug design (CADD) The current SAMPL organizers include John Chodera, Michael K. Gilson, David Mobley, and Michael Shirts.

Clifford P. Kubiak is an American inorganic chemist, currently a Distinguished Professor in Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Harold C. Urey Chair in Chemistry at the University of California, San Diego. Over the course of his career, Kubiak has published over 200 scientific articles. He has also received the American Chemical Society Award in Inorganic Chemistry, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and American Chemical Society. In 2020 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Susan A. Martinis is an American biochemist. She has co-authored over 57 publications in peer reviewed journals and scientific book chapters. Her expertise is in protein:RNA interactions and aminoacyl tRNA synthetases. As of 2019, she is the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Marion Sewer (1972-2016) was a pharmacologist and professor at the University of California, San Diego's Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences known for her research on steroid hormone biogenesis and her commitment to increasing diversity in science. Much of her research centered around cytochrome P450, a family of enzymes involved in the conversion of cholesterol into steroid hormones. She died unexpectedly at the age of 43 from a pulmonary embolism on January 28, 2016, while traveling through the Detroit airport.

Anne Michelle Baranger is an American chemist who is professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her research considers the experiences of chemistry students and ways to increase the number of students studying STEM subjects.
