Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is a politician and lobbyist from Miami,Florida,who represented Florida's 27th congressional district from 1989 to 2019. By the end of her tenure,she was the most senior U.S. Representative from Florida. She was Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee from 2011–2013. In 1989,Ros-Lehtinen won a special election and became the first Cuban American elected to Congress. She was also the first Republican woman elected to the House from Florida. Ros-Lehtinen gave the first Republican response to the State of the Union address in Spanish in 2011,and gave the third in 2014.

Marta Cazañas Permuy was a Cuban-American fine art patron,art collector,curator,art dealer,and promoter based in Coral Gables,Florida. She was an influential figure in the establishment of the Latin American art market of South Florida. She managed and co-founded Permuy Gallery,one of the first venues dedicated to Cuban art in the United States. She also hosted a long-running art salon where South Florida art,literary,business,and political figures would gather to discuss art and culture.
Elicio Argüelles y García–Menocal was a Cuban exile and politician - one of the last of the Cuban senators elected to office before the Communist Revolution. His father was Elicio Argüelles Pozo. He,and his father met Ernest Hemingway at a Jai alai game in Havana,and they became family friends. Argüelles owned the Frontón Jai Alai,the largest Jai Alai arena in Hanava. In Cuba during World War II,Argüelles was instrumental in the FBI effort to hunt Nazis in Latin America,and was involved in some way with Hemingway's anti-submarine missions. In the late 1950s,he had become one of Hemingway's five closest friends,alongside his cousin,Mario Menocal. His daughter is Rosario Kennedy. Argüelles and his family fled Cuba around 1960 to escape persecution by the new government of Fidel Castro,and wound up settling in exile in Little Havana,in Miami.
