Royal Artillery Gold Cup

The Royal Artillery Gold Cup is a National Hunt steeplechase in Britain which is open to horses aged six years or older. It is run at Sandown Park over a distance of about 3 miles (3 miles and 37 yards, or 4,862 metres) and during the race there are 22 fences to be jumped. It is scheduled to take place each year in February.

The race was first run in 1863, took place at Sandown Park for the first time in 1878 and has been run there continuously since 1921. Runners in the race have to be owned or leased by serving or past members of the Royal Artillery and must be ridden by serving or past members of the British Armed Forces. [1] A similar race, the Grand Military Gold Cup, takes place at Sandown Park in January. Captain Guy Disney's victory on Rathlin Rose in 2017 was the first race win by an amputee rider at a British racecourse. [2]

Trip To Paris is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. After showing modest form in his first two seasons he emerged as a top-class stayer as a four-year-old in 2015 after being gelded, winning the Chester Cup in May before recording his biggest win in the Ascot Gold Cup. He failed to win again after his Gold Cup success but was placed in a number of major races including a second in the Caulfield Cup. He was retired in July 2017 having won six of his twenty-seven races and earning over £800,000 in prize money.

Captain Guy Fraser Disney is a British steeplechase jockey. He is the first amputee jockey to win a horse race at a professional race-course in Britain. He won the Royal Artillery Gold Cup, on his horse, Rathlin Rose, at Sandown Park Racecourse, in Esher in Surrey, on 17 February 2017. Disney's horse was trained by racehorse trainer David Pipe.
