Captain [1] Guy Fraser Disney MBE (born 17 March 1982 [2] ) is a British steeplechase jockey. He is the first amputee jockey to win a horse race at a professional race-course in Britain. He won the Royal Artillery Gold Cup, on his horse, Rathlin Rose, at Sandown Park Racecourse, in Esher in Surrey, on 17 February 2017. [3] Disney's horse was trained by racehorse trainer David Pipe. As a former serviceman in the British Army, Disney said his thoughts turned to his fallen colleagues in Afghanistan when he won. [4]

Education

From the years 1995–2000, [5] Disney was educated at Malvern College, [6] a co-educational boarding and day independent school in the town of Malvern in Worcestershire, in the West of England, followed by the Royal Agricultural University [ citation needed ] in the market town of Cirencester in Gloucestershire, also in the West of England.

Life and career

Guy Disney served in The Light Dragoons, a cavalry regiment of the British Army, in Afghanistan. He suffered a life-changing injury, leading to leg amputation, and the fitting of a prosthetic leg, when his vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade while on patrol in Babaji in Helmand Province, in July 2009. [4]

Disney has since worked for the charitable organisation Walking With The Wounded , which helps wounded former British Armed Forces servicemen and women to transition to civilian life. [2] In March 2014, he returned to his former boarding school, Malvern College, to talk about his successful expedition with the organisation, accompanied by other wounded former service personnel, to both the North and South Poles. [7] Disney was initially rejected in his application to ride with a prosthetic limb by the British Horseracing Authority, but was eventually granted a licence in 2015, finishing third place on the horse Ballyallia Man at Sandown Park's Royal Artillery Gold Cup on 13 February in the same year. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to horse racing, polar expeditions and veterans' charities. [8]

Gregory D. Gadson

Gregory Dimitri Gadson is an American actor, motivational speaker, retired colonel in the United States Army and former commander of the U.S. Army Fort Belvoir garrison. He is also a bilateral above-the-knee amputee. He served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years as a field artillery officer and served on active duty for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Joint Forge, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Damien Thomlinson is an Australian commando, swimmer, rally car navigator, para-snowboarder and author. He joined the Australian Army in 2005, and went on to serve in Afghanistan. While serving with the 2nd Commando Regiment in Tarin Kowt District in April 2009, the vehicle he was in drove over an improvised explosive planted by the Taliban. Thomlinson was severely injured, suffering wounds to his face, arms and legs; the damage to his legs was so severe that they were amputated. After undergoing extensive rehabilitation, he stayed with his unit in a desk job. In June 2011, to honour the memory of a friend who died in Afghanistan, he walked the 96-kilometre (60 mi) long Kokoda Track on rubber prosthetic legs as part of a 25-man team of Australian soldiers.

Noah Matthew Galloway is a former United States Army soldier, motivational speaker, and extreme sports enthusiast. He was injured during the Iraq War, losing his left arm above the elbow and left leg above the knee. He was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars season 20, paired with Sharna Burgess. The pair finished in third place. He led his team to victory in the first season of the American Grit TV show on FOX. Professor. Munjed Al Muderis is an Australian Adjunct Clinical Professor in orthopaedic surgery, author and human rights activist. He has done pioneering work on prosthetics, especially on titanium devices.

Andrew Allen is an Ulster Unionist Party politician in Northern Ireland and a former soldier in the British Army. He served in the War in Afghanistan in 2008. He is one of the more liberal members of the party, consistently voting in favour of same-sex marriage and abortion.

David Henson British Paralympic athlete

David Henson, MBE is a British parasport athlete competing mainly in T42 classification sprint events. He has represented Britain at the Invictus Games, World and European Championships and in 2016 he was selected for the Summer Paralympics in Rio, winning a bronze medal in the 200m sprint (T42).

The Royal Artillery Gold Cup is a National Hunt steeplechase in Britain which is open to horses aged six years or older. It is run at Sandown Park over a distance of about 3 miles and during the race there are 22 fences to be jumped. It is scheduled to take place each year in February.

Row2Recovery is a British unincorporated Association of volunteers which assists military adaptive-rowing. The Association has completed four Atlantic adaptive-rowing crossings and, when a charity, supported a national adaptive-rowing programme for the British military wounded, injured and sick in partnership with British Rowing and Help for Heroes. Row2Recovery was founded in 2010 by former Army-Captains Edward Janvrin and Alexander Mackenzie.

Rob Jones (rower)

Robert R. Jones is an American farmer, Marine Corps veteran, motivational speaker, Paralympic athlete, and politician. In 2010, while serving in Afghanistan, he was severely wounded in action by an improvised explosive device where he lost both legs above the knee. Jones made headlines when he completed 31 consecutive marathons in 31 days while raising money for veterans. Between 2013 and 2014, he cycled nearly 5,200 miles across the United States in order to raise awareness for wounded veterans. He also won a bronze medal with Oksana Masters in mixed double sculls (rowing) at the 2012 Summer Paralympics.

Mark Ormrod is a former Royal Marine, Invictus Games athlete, author and motivational speaker. After triggering an improvised explosive device during a routine foot patrol in 2007, he suffered serious injuries resulting in a triple amputation. He was the UK's first triple amputee to survive the Afghanistan conflict. He has since gone on to participate in the Invictus Games.

Ben Parkinson MBE is a former British paratrooper, veterans' campaigner and author. He is the most serverely wounded soldier to survive the War in Afghanistan. Both his legs were amputated, he broke his back and suffered lasting brain damage when the Land Rover he was travelling in struck a landmine in 2006. He defied his doctors' expectations by learning to walk and talk again and regularly raises money for veterans' charities. His case forced the Ministry of Defence to significantly increase compensation payouts to wounded British soldiers.
