The Royal South Yarra Championships [1] was a men's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1887 as the Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club Tournament. It was first played at Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club, South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. [2] The tournament was staged until 1968 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Circuit.

History

In 1884 the Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club was founded. [3] In 1887 the Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club Tournament was established. In 1893 the tournament was rebranded as the Royal South Yarra Championships. In 1901 a women's event was added to the schedule. The championships were held annually through till 1968 when they were discontinued as part of the world wide ILTF Circuit.

The first winners of the men's singles event was James Dickson [4] and the final winner was Peter Keller. [5] The first winner of the ladies singles was a Miss Salter and the final winner was Val Bermingham. Other Australian and international player who have also won the singles championship title included; Léonce Aslangul, [5] Harry Hopman, [5] Pat O'Hara Wood, [5] Harry Hassett, John Bromwich, [5] Tom Okker, [5] Esna Boyd, Margaret Smith, Deidre Catt, Judy Tegart and Madonna Schacht

The 1975 Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix was a professional tennis circuit administered by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) which served as a forerunner to the current Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour and the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. The circuit consisted of the four modern Grand Slam tournaments and open tournaments recognised by the ILTF. The Commercial Union Assurance Masters, Davis Cup Final and Nations Cup are included in this calendar but did not count towards the Grand Prix.

The Tunbridge Wells Open was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1908 as the Tunbridge Wells Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. It was played at the Tunbridge Wells Lawn Tennis Club, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. The tournament ran until 1981 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Circuit.

The Lanarkshire Open Tennis Championships also known simply as the Lanarkshire Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1886 as the Championship of Lanarkshire It was first played at Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The championships were part of the ILTF Circuit through till 1967. After which it became part of the Scottish LTA Circuit until 1999 when it was discontinued.

The British Columbia Championships also known as the British Columbia Lawn Tennis Championships or the Labatts British Columbia Championships was a men's and women's international tennis tournament founded in 1886 as the Victoria Lawn Tennis Challenge Cup. also called the British Columbia Challenge Cup.

The Lansdowne Championships was a men's and women's international grass court tennis tournament founded in 1889 as the Lansdowne Lawn Tennis Tournament. The tournament was played at the Lansdowne Lawn Tennis Club, Dublin, Ireland. It was played annually until 1969 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Circuit.

The Geelong Easter Tournament also known as the Geelong Easter Championship was a combined men's and women's hard court tennis tournament founded in 1886. The tournament was organised by the Geelong Lawn Tennis Club and played at Geelong, Victoria, Australia annually until 1967 as part of the ILTF Circuit when it was discontinued.

The Old Dominion Championship also known as the Old Dominion Open Championship was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1905. It was first played at the Hermitage Golf Club, Richmond, Virginia, United States in 1905. In 1936 the final edition was played Country Club of Virginia, after which when it was downgraded from the main worldwide ILTF Circuit and discontinued.

The Gulf State Championships was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1892 as the Gulf Coast Championships. It was first played at the Tampa Bay Lawn Tennis Club, Tampa Bay Hotel, Tampa, Florida, United States in 1892. In 1968 the final edition was played at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after which when it was downgraded from the main worldwide ILTF Circuit.

The Asian Championships also known as the Asian International Championships or Asian Lawn Tennis Championships was an open international men's and women's grass and clay court tennis tournament founded in 1949 as the International Championships of Asia. The tournament was one of eight official championships of the International Lawn Tennis Federation. It was first played at the Calcutta South Club, Calcutta, India. The international tournament was played at other locations until September 1972 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Independent Tour.

The New South Wales Hard Court Championships was a men's and women's open tennis tournament founded in 1915, and first held at Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia. It was first organised by the Dubbo District Tennis Association in conjunction with the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association and was played on clay courts. It was staged as part of ILTF Australasia Circuit a sub circuit of the ILTF World Circuit until 1972, then became part of the ILTF Independent Tour until 1984 and finally part of the Tennis Australia Circuit till 1988 when it was discontinued as a senior event.

The South-West Districts Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1950. The tournament was played at the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club, Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, and ran annually until 1979 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Independent Circuit.
