Rudăria Coal Mine is an underground mining exploitation, one of the largest in Romania located in Eftimie Murgu in the south-western part of the country in Caraș-Severin County. [1] The legal entity managing the Rudăria mine is the National Hard Coal Company which was set up in 1998. [1] The mine has reserves of 80 million tonnes of coal.

Underground soft rock mining is a group of underground mining techniques used to extract coal, oil shale, potash and other minerals or geological materials from sedimentary ("soft") rocks. Because deposits in sedimentary rocks are commonly layered and relatively less hard, the mining methods used differ from those used to mine deposits in igneous or metamorphic rocks. Underground mining techniques also differ greatly from those of surface mining.

Petrila Mine disaster

On November 15, 2008, 12 miners died after two explosions at a mine in Petrila, one of six coal mining cities in the Jiu Valley region of Hunedoara County, Romania. On November 24 another miner died at Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest raising the death toll to 13.
