Rugby league is a minor team sport that has been played in Argentina since 2005. After a lengthy hiatus, Argentina played a domestic game on 7 November 2015. Argentina hosted the first Latin-American rugby league tournament on 10 November 2016. [1]

History

Argentina first started to play rugby league in 2005 when the Australian Police rugby league team toured Buenos Aires. The Australian Police played two fixtures winning on both occasions, the first 40-4 and the second 60–6 with around 400 spectators watching both games. [2]

In 2006, four teams took part in a Rugby League 9s tournament in Buenos Aires, however the sport then disappeared from the country.

As of 2015, the new Governing Body is Confederacion Argentina de Rugby League.

On 7 November 2015 two domestic teams played as the curtain-raiser of a soccer match in Miramar.

On 10 November 2016, the first Latin-American Rugby League tournament took place in the city of Miramar. Argentina presented 3 teams: Argentina National "Boars", Argentina Provincial "Mustangs" and the Buenos Aires selection "Wild Ducks". These teams played against the Chile selection and the Latin Heat domestic selection. The Argentina National "Boars" won the final against Chile.

In November 2017 the Sudamericano Rugby League Tournament will be in Santiago de Chile, where Argentina will bring their team.

The URBA Top 13 is an Argentine rugby union club competition organised by the Buenos Aires Rugby Union (URBA). It is the top division of the Argentine rugby league system. Created on 10 April 1899 by the "River Plate Rugby Union", the Top 12 is the oldest rugby competition in South America and one of the oldest club competitions in the world.

Florencia Martina Habif is an Argentine field hockey player. Being part of Argentina's Junior National Team "Las Leoncitas" since 2009 and of the National Team Las Leonas since 2010, she competed in several tournaments, including the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where the team achieved the silver medal, being the team's youngest player. In 2014, she was named the Best Young Player in the world by the International Hockey Federation and has been nomitaded 4 times.

The History of the Argentina national rugby union team starts with the first international played by an Argentine side against the British Isles in 1910 when they toured on South America. Argentina gained recognition in 1965, when the team toured South Africa playing a series of friendly matches there. In that tour the national team was nicknamed Los Pumas, a name that became an identity mark for Argentina, remaining to present days.

Súper Liga Americana de Rugby Rugby union competition

The Superliga Americana de Rugby is a professional rugby union competition and the top-level championship for many countries in South America. In the 2020 season it will be contested by five teams with a team each from; Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay with a future team from Colombia joining in 2021 after playing an exhibition series against the 5th-placed team at the end of the season later in May 2020. Officially sanctioned by Sudamérica Rugby, which is consequently part of World Rugby, the league was officially launched in November 29, 2019.
