Rugby league is a team sport that is played in several regions of Spain.

A competition was formed in Catalonia by the Associació Catalana de Rugby Lliga in 2008 and ran for three seasons. The sport returned to Spain with the formation of the Spanish Rugby League Association in 2013. New clubs have subsequently formed in the Valencian Community, Madrid, and Andalucia.

History

On 30 May 1993, XIII Catalan (of Perpignan) and the Huddersfield Giants contested the Alex Angel Trophy at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona. Huddersfield won 23–22. [1]

Perpignan-based professional club Catalans Dragons have hosted two matches in Barcelona, in 2009 and 2019. A crowd of 31,555 at the latter game, played at Camp Nou against the Wigan Warriors, set a regular season attendance record for a standalone Super League match. [2]

Governing body

The governing body for the sport in Spain is the Spanish Rugby League Association, which was formed in 2013.

Competitions

The first competition under a Spanish governing body (see Rugby league in Catalonia for previous history) began in 2014 with five clubs.

National team

The Spain national rugby league team was formed in 2014 and defeated Belgium in their first match. By beating Latvia in a playoff and then Malta and Greece in an initial qualifying group in 2015, they advanced to the final qualifying stage for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, where they were placed in a three team group (Pool B) alongside Russia and Ireland. Their first result was a 6-40 loss to Russia, at Fili Stadium, Moscow on 15 October 2016, [3] and their second a 46-6 defeat by Ireland, which resulted in their elimination.

Rugby union is a growing team sport in Spain. As of 2019, there were 37,241 registered rugby union players in Spain, playing for 332 clubs in various divisions. The sport's governing body in Spain, the Spanish Rugby Federation, was founded in 1923. It joined the International Rugby Board in 1988, and is also a member of Rugby Europe.

Catalans Dragons French professional rugby league club, based in Perpignan

The Catalans Dragons are a professional rugby league club from Perpignan, Pyrénées-Orientales department, France. The team competes in the Super League, they are one of two clubs in the top-tier competition from outside England. The Dragons play regular home games at Stade Gilbert Brutus in the centre of the city. Catalans Dragons are the first non-British team to win the Challenge Cup since the competition started in 1896, after beating Warrington Wolves 20–14 at Wembley Stadium on 25 August 2018.

Australian rules football in Europe

Australian rules football is played in Europe at an amateur level in a large number of countries. The oldest and largest leagues are those in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark, each nation having a number of clubs, organised junior programs and women's football. The British AFL has now dramatically expanded into the Welsh, Scottish and English leagues. The Danish AFL has been responsible for the expansion of Australian Football into Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Norway. It currently has 22 member nations. AFL Europe, with backing of the AFL in Australia has overseen a large improvement in the organisation of Australian football in Europe.

Super League XIV

The 2009 Super League season is the 14th season of rugby league since the Super League format was introduced in 1996. Fourteen teams competed for the Minor Premiership over 27 rounds after which, the highest finishing teams entered the play-offs to compete for a place in the Grand Final and a chance to win the Super League Trophy. The previous Top six play-offs are extended to eight teams.

The sports club's president is Joan Laporta.

Rugby union is a small but popular field sport in Catalonia. The game is most popular in the North near the French border.

Rugby Europe

Rugby Europe is the administrative body for rugby union in Europe. It was formed in 1999 to promote, develop, organise and administer the game of rugby in Europe under the authority of World Rugby. However, it is not responsible for the organisation of the Six Nations Championship or the competitions run by European Professional Club Rugby.

The Spanish Rugby League Association also known as España Rugby League, is the governing body of rugby league in Spain. The body was officially founded in 2013 and has held affiliate-level membership of the Rugby League European Federation since 2015, making the national team eligible to qualify for the Rugby League World Cup.
