Russia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Russian entry was selected internally by the Russian broadcaster Russia-1 (RTR). The Tolmachevy Sisters, winners of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2006, represented Russia with the song "Shine", which qualified from the first semi-final and placed 7th in the final, scoring 89 points.
On 1 September 2013, RTR announced that a national final, titled Kto?, would take place on 31 December 2013 to select the Russian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. RTR opened a submission period for interested artists and composers to submit their entries and a jury panel was to evaluate the received submissions and select 25 entries for the competition, however RTR announced in December 2013 that the national final would be postponed until March 2014 and the submission deadline would be extended until 28 February 2014. [1] [2] Plans for the national final were later abandoned by the broadcaster due to the poor quality of submitted songs. [3]
On 15 March 2014, RTR announced that they had internally selected the Tolmachevy Sisters to represent Russia in Copenhagen. [4] [ better source needed ] The Tolmachevy Sisters' selection as the Russian representative was decided upon by a jury panel. [5] Tolmachevy Sisters previously won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2006. The Russian song, "Shine", was presented to the public on 19 March 2014. [6] "Shine" was composed by Philipp Kirkorov and Dimitris Kontopoulos, with lyrics by John Ballard, Ralph Charlie and Gerard James Borg; Kontopoulos, Ballard and Charlie had previously co-written the 2013 Azerbaijani entry "Hold Me. During the semi-final allocation draw on 20 January 2014 at the Copenhagen City Hall, Russia was drawn to compete in the first half of the first semi-final on 6 May 2014. [10] In the first semi-final, the producers of the show decided that Russia would perform 7th, following Albania and preceding Azerbaijan. [11] Russia qualified from the first semi-final and competed in the final on 10 May 2014. [12] During the winner's press conference for the first semi-final qualifiers, Russia was allocated to compete in the second half of the final. [13] In the final, the producers of the show decided that Russia would perform 15th, following France and preceding Italy. [14] Russia placed 7th in the final, scoring 89 points. [15]
At the contest, the Tolmachevy Sisters were joined on stage by four backing vocalists: Anna Nilsson, Jenny Tärneberg, Anna Strandberg and Rui Andrade. [16] [ better source needed ] The Russian performance featured the Tolmachevy Sisters performing with long translucent sticks and interacting with a platform that moved like a balance and eventually opened into a white sun-like canvas. [17]
Following the revelation of Russia's qualification into the final during the broadcast of the first semi-final, the announcement was met by an audible booing from the venue audience . The negative reaction was believed to be a response to Russia's involvement in the crisis in Ukraine and its stance on LGBT rights. [18]
In Russia, both the semi-finals and the final were broadcast on Russia-1 with commentary by Olga Shelest and Dmitriy Guberniev. [19] [20] The Russian spokesperson revealing the result of the Russian vote in the final was 2000 Russian contest entrant and Eurovision Song Contest 2009 final co-presenter Alsou. [21]

Anastasiya Andreyevna Tolmacheva and Maria Andreyevna Tolmacheva, known as the Tolmachevy Sisters, are identical twin singers and actresses from Kursk, Russia. Aged nine, they won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with their song "Vesenniy jazz". Eight years later, they represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, placing seventh with the song "Shine".
Russia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. The Russian entry was selected through an internal selection, organised by Russian broadcaster Channel One Russia (C1R). Dina Garipova represented Russia with the song "What If", which qualified from the first semi-final of the competition and placed 5th in the final with 174 points.
Georgia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Three Minutes to Earth" written by Zaza Miminoshvili and Eugen Eliu. The song was performed by the Shin and Mariko, which were internally selected in February 2014 by the Georgian broadcaster Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) to compete at the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Georgian entry, "Three Minutes to Earth", was presented to the public on 14 March 2014.
Sweden participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Undo" written by Fredrik Kempe, David Kreuger and Hamed "K-One" Pirouzpanah. The song was performed by Sanna Nielsen. The Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) organised the national final Melodifestivalen 2014 in order to select the Swedish entry for the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. After a six-week-long competition consisting of four heats, a Second Chance round and a final, "Undo" performed by Sanna Nielsen emerged as the winner after achieving the highest score following the combination of votes from eleven international jury groups and a public vote.
Switzerland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Swiss entry was selected through the national final Die Große Entscheidungsshow, organised by the Swiss broadcaster Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. Sebalter represented Switzerland with the song "Hunter of Stars", which qualified from the second semi-final to compete in the final. Switzerland placed 13th in the final, scoring 64 points.
Macedonia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Their entry was selected through an internal selection, organised by the Macedonian broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television (MRT). Macedonia was represented by the song "To the Sky" performed by Tijana, which failed to qualify from the second semi-final, placing 13th with a score of 33 points. The song was written by Elena Risteska, Darko Dimitrov and Lazar Cvetkoski.
Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Their entry was chosen through an internal selection, organised by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio televizija Crne Gore (RTCG). Sergej Ćetković represented Montenegro with the song "Moj svijet", which he wrote himself together with Emina Sandal. The entry qualified from the first semi-final and competed in the final. This was Montenegro's first qualification to the final since their debut in the contest in 2007. Montenegro placed 19th in the final, earning 37 points.
Spain participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Dancing in the Rain" written by Ruth Lorenzo, Jim Irvin and Julian Emery. The song was performed by Ruth Lorenzo. The Spanish broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE) organised the national final Mira quién va a Eurovisión in order to select the Spanish entry for the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. Five artists and songs competed in the televised show where an in-studio jury and a public televote selected "Dancing in the Rain" performed by Ruth Lorenzo as the winner.
Belarus participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Cheesecake" written by Yuriy Vashchuk and Dmitry Novik. The song was performed by Teo, which is the artistic name of singer Yuriy Vashchuk. The Belarusian entry for the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark was selected through a national final organised by the Belarusian broadcaster National State Television and Radio Company of the Republic of Belarus (BTRC). The national final consisted of fourteen competing acts participating in a televised production where "Cheesecake" performed by Teo was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from a jury panel and public televoting.
Greece participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Rise Up" written by Nick Raptakis, Theofilos Pouzbouris, Shane Schuller and performed by Freaky Fortune featuring RiskyKidd. The song was selected through the four-participant national final Eurosong 2014 – a MAD show, developed by Dimosia Tileorasi and organised and produced by the private music channel MAD TV.
Armenia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Not Alone" written by Aram Mp3 and Garik Papoyan. The song was performed by Aram Mp3, who was selected internally by the Armenian broadcaster Public Television of Armenia (AMPTV) to represent Armenia in the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. Aram Mp3's selection as the Armenian artist was announced on 31 December 2013, while the song "Not Alone" was later presented to the public on 14 March 2014 during a special presentation programme.
Azerbaijan participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Azerbaijani entry was selected through Böyük Səhnə, organised by Azerbaijani broadcaster İctimai Television (İTV). Azerbaijan was represented by the song "Start a Fire", performed by Dilara Kazimova and written by Stefan Örn, Johan Kronlund and Alessandra Günthardt. The entry qualified from the first semi-final to compete in the final. Azerbaijan placed 22nd in the final, scoring 33 points.
Slovenia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Round and Round" written by Raay, Tinkara Kovač, Hannah Mancini and Tina Piš. The song was performed by Tinkara Kovač. Slovenian broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija organised the national final EMA 2014 in order to select the Slovenian entry for the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. Seven entries competed in the national final where the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. In the first round, the top two entries were selected by a three-member jury panel. In the second round, "Round and Round" performed by Tinkara Kovač was selected as the winner entirely by a public vote.
Switzerland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Time to Shine", written and performed by Mélanie René. The Swiss German broadcaster Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF) in collaboration with the other broadcasters part of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation organised the national final ESC 2015 – Die Entscheidungsshow in order to select the Swiss entry for the 2015 contest in Vienna, Austria. After narrowing down hundreds of candidate songs to a field of six entries, the votes of jury panel and a public televote selected "Time to Shine" performed by Mélanie René as the winner. In the second of the Eurovision semi-finals, Switzerland failed to qualify to the final, placing seventeenth and last out of the 17 participating countries with 4 points.
Russia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 with the song "A Million Voices", written by Gabriel Alares, Joakim Björnberg, Katrina Noorbergen, Leonid Gutkin and Vladimir Matetsky. The song was performed by Polina Gagarina, who was selected by Russian broadcaster Channel One Russia (C1R) in March 2015 to represent the nation at the 2015 contest in Vienna, Austria. In the first of the Eurovision semi-finals "A Million Voices" placed first out of the 16 participating countries, securing its place among the 27 other songs in the final. In Russia's nineteenth Eurovision appearance on 23 May, "A Million Voices" finished in second place, receiving 303 points and full marks from five countries.
Russia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2015 which took place on 21 November 2015, in Sofia, Bulgaria. The Russian broadcaster, Russia-1, selected their entry through a televised national final. Mikhail Smirnov won it and represented Russia with his song "Mechta (Dream)". He finished 6th in the final of the contest with 80 points.
Russia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "You Are the Only One" written by Philipp Kirkorov, Dimitris Kontopoulos, John Ballard and Ralph Charlie. The song was performed by Sergey Lazarev who was internally selected by the Russian broadcaster All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) to compete at the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Lazarev's appointment as the Russian representative was announced on 10 December 2015, while the song, "You Are the Only One", was presented to the public on 5 March 2016.
Russia won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 which took take place on 26 November 2017, in Tbilisi, Georgia. The Russian broadcaster Russia-1, owned by the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) was responsible for organising their entry for the contest. Polina Bogusevich won the contest with the song "Wings".
Russia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 which took place on 25 November 2018 in Minsk, Belarus.
Russia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019 which took place on 24 November 2019 in Gliwice, Poland. The Russian broadcaster All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) was responsible for organising their entry for the contest. Tatyana Mezhentseva and Denberel Oorzhak won the national final on 24 September 2019 with the song "Vremya dlya nas". The Russian organisation team later opted to change the name of the song to "A Time for Us".
