"You Are the Only One" is a song recorded by Russian singer Sergey Lazarev with music composed by Philipp Kirkorov and Dimitris Kontopoulos and English lyrics written by John Ballard and Ralph Charlie. It represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 held in Stockholm. The song was released as a digital download on 5 March 2016. [1] On 28 July 2016,Lazarev released a Russian version of the song,entitled "Pust' ves' mir podozhdyot" (Russian :Пустьвесьмирподождёт,"Let The Whole World Wait"). [2]
"You Are the Only One" was composed by Philipp Kirkorov and Dimitris Kontopoulos,the same team behind "Shady Lady",who placed second in Eurovision 2008 for Ukraine;with English lyrics by John Ballard and Ralph Charlie. [3]
All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) announced Sergey Lazarev as their performer for the 61st edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. [4] The following day,it was announced that Lazarev's internal selection was decided upon by the editorial board of VGTRK with the executive producer of the Russia-1 channel,Gennady Gokhshtein,revealing that a song produced by Philipp Kirkorov had also been selected. [5] On 5 March 2016,VGTRK released "You Are the Only One" as the their entrant along with its music video which features Vladislava Evtushenko,Miss Universe Russia 2015. [3]
After its selection,Lazarev took part in a concert tour of Russia where he performed "You Are the Only One" for the first time during his concert in Kursk on 20 March 2016. [6] A performance of the song was also presented to the Russian audience for the first time during the Russia-1 programme Tantsi so zvezdami on 27 March. [7] On 3 April,he performed during the Eurovision Pre-Party,which was held at the Izvestia Hall in Moscow. [8]
He also made several appearances across Europe to specifically promote "You Are the Only One" as the Russian Eurovision entry. Between 11 and 13 April,he took part in promotional activities in Tel Aviv,Israel and performed during the Israel Calling event held at the Ha'teatron venue. [9] Between 13 and 14 April,he took part in promotional activities and provided interviews in Malta. [10] [11] On 17 April,he completed promotional activities in Belgrade,Serbia and recorded a performance for the talk show programme Veče sa Ivanom Ivanovićem ,which aired on Prva Srpska Televizija on 18 April. [12] [13] On 18 April,he made promotional appearances in Athens,Greece where he attended a meet and greet during a party organized by the Oikotimes website and he performed during the MAD TV Madwalk 2016 music and fashion show. On 10 May 2016,the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest was held in the Globe Arena in Stockholm hosted by Sveriges Television (SVT) and broadcast live throughout the continent. Lazarev performed "You Are the Only One" ninth on the evening and qualified for the grand final. After the grand final it was revealed that it had received in its semi-final 342 points,placing first. [16] On 14 May 2016,he performed the song again in the grand final eighteenth on the evening. [17]
The Eurovision performances featured Lazarev in front of a projection screen that displayed 3D images that he interacted with. [18] [19] He posed,climbed,and laid in the middle of the projection screen as various effects were projected. He was dressed in a black costume and performed choreographed movements together with the backing performers,who were also dressed in black. The stage director for the performance was Fokas Evangelinos. On stage,Lazarev was joined by five backing vocalists/dancers:Jennie Jahns,Alvaro Estrella,Johan D. Seil,Daniel Gill,and Adam Svensson. At the end of voting,the song had received 491 points placing third,winning the public televote. [21]
Lazarev did a version of "You Are the Only One" in duet with Elena Paparizou during the Home concert series to replace the cancelled 2020 Contest. [22]

"You Are The Only One" was also recorded and released in 2019 by Nicki French who herself entered the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 for the United Kingdom. French's version appears on the EP "Let's Play That Song Again" with production by Matt Pop.

Russia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 23 times since its debut in 1994. Russia won the 2008 contest with Dima Bilan performing the song "Believe". In 2018, the country failed to qualify for the final for the first time in its history. The Russian entry has been chosen through both internal selections and a televised national final titled Evrovidenie, with its most recent entry (2021) being chosen by the latter.
Sergey Vyacheslavovich Lazarev is a Russian singer. He is most famous for his singing career, when he rose to fame as a member of the group Smash!!. The group broke up in 2006. Since then Lazarev has pursued a solo career. He represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden, and finished in third place, coming first in the televote. He represented Russia again at Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel with the song "Scream", and similarly finished in third place.

Smash!! was a Russian pop duo formed in 2001 which consisted of members Sergey Lazarev and Vlad Topalov. They sang mainly in English, and were most popular among teenagers in Russia and Southeast Asia. The duo were the first winners of New Wave, winning the contest in 2002. Although the duo fell apart in 2004, Smash!! officially disbanded in 2005.

Greece participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the song "This Is Our Night" written by Dimitris Kontopoulos, Craig Porteils and Cameron Giles-Webb and performed by Sakis Rouvas. "La voix" is a song by Swedish singer Malena Ernman, which served as the Swedish entry at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, held in Moscow, Russia. Songwriter Philipp Kirkorov represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 1995 with the song "Kolybelnaya dlya vulkana" where he placed seventeenth, while Natalia Gordienko had previously represented Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 together with Arsenium and Connect-R, placing twentieth with the song "Loca", and was due to compete in the 2020 contest with "Prison". The Moldovan song, "Sugar", was presented to the public on 4 March 2021.
Russia was scheduled to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy. However, on 25 February 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) excluded Russia from participating. Russia was originally set to perform in the second half of the first semi-final on 10 May 2022.
Fokas Evangelinos is a Greek dancer, choreographer and artistic director for television, film, stage and video clips. He was the creative director of the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 held in Athens and he has also staged and choreographed some of the most memorable performances at the Eurovision Song Contest from different countries.
