Rut Bízková (born 19 July 1957) [2] was the Minister of Environment of the Czech Republic. She was appointed on 16 April 2010, [2] succeeding Jakub Šebesta, who had in turn briefly succeeded Jan Dusík after the latter's resignation in March 2010. [3]

Jan Dusík is a Czech politician, former Minister of Environment, activist and since 18 July 2011 working in the regional office for Europe of the United Nations Environment Programme in Geneva; he has been the Acting Director of the Office since 1 December 2011. He was appointed regional director on 31 January 2014.

Career

Bízková was educated at Prague's Institute of Chemical Technology, and began her career at the Nuclear Research Institute in Řež. She spent three months in 1993 working for the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, before being appointed press spokeswoman for coal power plants of ČEZ Group, the Czech Republic's major power generation company. [4] Her first government post was as the Environment Ministry's director of public affairs; she held other posts within the ministry til 2004, when she moved to its subsidiary CENIA (the Czech Environmental Information Agency). In 2006 she moved from CENIA's deputy directorship to the post of deputy environment minister in 2006, where she remained until her full ministerial appointment. [2]

Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), formerly the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), is a chemical technology research university located in Mumbai, India. The institute also has campuses at Jalna, Marathwada and Bhubaneshwar It is focused on training and research in various branches of chemical engineering, chemical technology, and pharmacy. It was established in 1933 and was granted deemed university status in 2008, making it the only state-funded deemed university in India.On 12 February 2018 it was given status of Category 1 institute with graded autonomy by MHRD and UGC. It is also an institute with a special status as mentioned in SECTION IV of the Report of the Empowered Expert Committee in 2018.

Prunéřov II

Among Bízková's early acts as minister, in late April 2010, was to approve the renovation of the Prunéřov II coal power plant. The 1bn euro works, [4] set to improve the plant's efficiency and extend its operational life by 25 years, [5] were signed off despite an unusual legal protest from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The FSM, a Pacific island nation, objected that coal burning and the associated release of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, contributed to the global warming, and resulting effects that threatened to engulf island states. The international environmental pressure group Greenpeace criticized Bízková's decision, calling attention to her status as a former employee of the plant's operator. [6]

The Prunéřov Power Station is the largest coal-fired power station in the Czech Republic with installed capacity of 1,490 MW. It is located near Kadaň.

Federated States of Micronesia Island republic in Oceania

The Federated States of Micronesia is an independent republic associated to the United States. Carbon dioxide chemical compound

Carbon dioxide (chemical formula CO2) is a colorless gas with a density about 60% higher than that of dry air. Carbon dioxide consists of a carbon atom covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms. It occurs naturally in Earth's atmosphere as a trace gas. The current concentration is about 0.04% (410 ppm) by volume, having risen from pre-industrial levels of 280 ppm. Natural sources include volcanoes, hot springs and geysers, and it is freed from carbonate rocks by dissolution in water and acids. Because carbon dioxide is soluble in water, it occurs naturally in groundwater, rivers and lakes, ice caps, glaciers and seawater. It is present in deposits of petroleum and natural gas. Carbon dioxide is odorless at normally encountered concentrations. However, at high concentrations, it has a sharp and acidic odor.

Spring 2010 flooding

In her capacity as chair of the Czech Central Flood Commission, [7] Bízková led the Czech Republic's response to the May–June 2010 Central European floods. She urged local government officials to take action to build defences against future flooding, [8] earmarking 3.45 billion koruna from government budgets for such works. [9] [10]

The koruna is the currency of the Czech Republic since 1993, and in English it is sometimes referred to as Czech crown or Czech krone. The koruna is one of European Union's 11 currencies, and the Czech Republic is legally bound to adopt the euro currency in the future.

The Czech Republic operates two nuclear power plants: Temelín and Dukovany. In 2010 there were government and corporate moves to expand Czech nuclear power generation capacity. Any expansion is likely to build on plans first developed in the 1980s.

OKD is a major mining company in the Czech Republic, the only producer of hard coal in the country with an annual production of around 8-9 million tonnes from 4 mines with 23 shafts extracting coal from depths ranging from 600 to 1,300 metres below the surface.

The library's main building is located in the historical Clementinum building in Prague, where approximately half of its books are kept. Brown coal mining limits in North Bohemia

Territorial limits to the mining of brown coal in North Bohemia are legally binding according to Resolution No. 444 passed in 1991 by the government of the Czech Republic, on the basis of a proposal tabled by the then Minister for the Environment, Ivan Dejmal. The limits define the areas that can be mined, as well as areas where coal reserves have been written off. There is now the prospect, however, that the limits will be breached and sanction given to increase coal mining further, which would involve the demolition of more communities within the currently demarcated limits, e.g. Horní Jiřetín and Černice.
