Rybon Art Center is an international, independent and artist-led institute based in Tehran. It was established in 2008 in order to encourage artistic innovations and experimentations among local artists and also explore possible exchange of ideas and knowledge in the field of contemporary critical art of Iran beyond ethnic and regional boundaries. During these years Rybon has initiated and conducted numerous projects including art residencies, local and international artist workshops, art shares and artist talks, screenings, enhancing local art networks and facilitating international art exchanges. Rybon started its first residency projects in collaboration with local artistic and cultural institutes, inviting established artists from neighboring countries. Holding Rybon International Artists’ Workshop based on Triangle workshops in 2012 in collaboration with Mohsen Gallery and Darbast Platform in Tehran was another step toward establishing residency culture. Impediments for holding international residencies lead to devising a new form of residency, namely exchange programs, by Rybon. The first of these exchange programs was held in 2013 in collaboration with Organhaus Art Space of China and Mohsen Gallery in Tehran and Chongqing, China. At the present the “Exchange Program” is being successfully practiced as a pivotal part of Kooshk Residency programs. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]
Rybon organized the Second Rybon International Artists's Workshop in 2016 based on Triangle workshops in collaboration with Kooshk Residency, deegar platform and Gasworks. This program aimed to gather artists from all around the world to discuss and look for the possibilities to exchange ideas and knowledge beyond the ethnic, regional and artistic boundaries. Five Asian, European and African artists, as well as five Iranian artists participated in this program. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]
Mohsen Vaziri Moghaddam, was an Iranian-born painter, sculptor, and a professor of art. He was most notable for his style of abstract expressionism, and was once referred to as the "pioneer of modern Iranian abstraction."
A cursory glance at the history of art reveals that social, political and economic conditions have always played a major role in the emergence of new artistic currents and styles. As an example Flight by Morteza Katouzian is showing the marginalized people who have no freedom as result of political changes. In Iran, the social and political developments of the 1940s radically altered the evolution of this country's plastic arts and entirely altering its natural path.
The Triangle Network, formally known as the Triangle Arts Trust, is an international arts organisation that brings together artists from different countries to explore new ideas and expand the boundaries of their practice.
Roxana Manouchehri is an Iranian visual artist. Through her work, Manouchehri generally focuses on her surroundings and its essential aspects. Although many Iranians’ lifestyles appear modern, they are still governed largely by conventional, religious attitudes. She addresses the gap of nature and form found between modernism and tradition. She has an M.A. in Painting from the Art University Tehran, Iran, 2001, and a B.A. in Painting from the same university, 1997.
Sazmanab is a curatorial project which originally started as an artist-run space and residency program in Tehran in 2008. Sazmanab supported artistic work in a wide range of media through exhibitions and events, residencies for artists and curators, workshops, talks, and other events.
Sohrab Kashani is an Iranian artist and contemporary art curator.
Shahla Aghapour also known as Shahla Aghapour-Benakohell is an Iranian artist, author and gallery director living in Germany. She works both as a writer and poet, as well as a painter, sculptor, performance artist and director of Galerie-Benakohell.
Tooraj Khamenehzadeh is an artist and curator born in Qazvin, Iran, and based in New York. He is known for his significant contributions to photography and video art. Initially rooted in theater, Khamenehzadeh eventually transitioned to visual arts. Growing up in an environment influenced by Eastern philosophy, Khamenehzadeh's artistic sensibilities gravitated towards mysticism and poetry.
Candice Lin is an interdisciplinary artist who works in installation, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, and video. Her work is multi-sensorial and often includes living and organic materials and processes.
Morehshin Allahyari is an Iranian media artist, activist, and writer based in New York. Her work questions current political, socio-cultural, and gender norms, particularly exploring the relationship between technology, history, and art activism. Allahyari’s artworks include 3D-printed objects, videos, experimental animation, web art, and publications. As a 2017 Research Resident at Eyebeam, Allahyari also worked on the concept of "Digital Colonialism"; a term she has coined since 2015.
Founded in 2014, Kooshk is a non-profit art and cultural space, providing artist-in-residence programs. It is located in downtown Tehran, Iran.
Keyvan Heydari-Shovir, also known as CK1, is an Iranian-born contemporary artist, and street artist. His work combines Iranian traditional culture with contemporary pop culture, and he is a pioneer of Iranian graffiti art. He lives in Los Angeles, and previously lived in San Francisco and Tehran.
Mehrdad Afsari is an Iranian photographer best known for his artistic and unusual landscapes with a conceptual and philosophical approach.
Tehran Contemporary Music Festival (TCMF) is the premiere contemporary music festival in Iran and it has been regarded as an influential Contemporary musical event in Iran, and gradually become one of the most important new music festivals in the Middle East area.
ART X Lagos is an art fair in Lagos, Nigeria. It is the leading international art fair in West Africa, founded and launched in 2016, and seven editions have been held so far. The eighth edition of the fair will be held from 2 to 5 November 2023.
The Pejman Foundation is an Iranian nonprofit art foundation, established by Hamidreza Pejman in 2015, to promote art in a space free of nationality and geographical boundaries, and to connect the common aspects of art and philosophy. Throughout recent years, the activities of Pejman Foundation has expanded beyond building its collection and its grant and sponsorship program. Through the organization of workshops, lectures, and panel discussions; the invitation of international experts; its artist exchange programs; as well as its support for cultural research and publications, Pejman Foundation has become a creative hub for art practitioners and initiatives in Iran and abroad. Today, Pejman Foundation supports art and culture through a vibrant program of exhibitions, talks, and events at its multiple sites including Argo Factory and Kandovan.
Spring Workshop was a nonprofit arts organization based in Hong Kong from 2011 to 2018. Founded as a cross-disciplinary residency program and exhibition space, Spring was called "rather enjoyably resistant to categorization" and a “visual arts equivalent to a hackerspace.” In 2016, Spring received the Prudential Eye Award for Best Asian Contemporary Art Organization.
Mulenga Jestina Mulenga is a Zambian painter, writer, sculptor and photographer.
Raheleh "Minoosh" Zomorodinia is an Iranian-born American interdisciplinary visual artist, curator, and educator. She works in many mediums, including in photography, video, installation, and performance. Her work is informed by the tension between Iran and the United States, as well as explorations of the self, of home, nature, and the environment. She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
