Kooshk Residency

Founded in 2014, Kooshk is a non-profit art and cultural space, providing artist-in-residence programs. It is located in downtown Tehran, Iran. [1]

Programs

Kooshk frequently takes part in international exchange programs, composed of two parts. The first part is a month-long residency held in Iran and the second part is in the selected artist-in-residence's country (or vice versa) with a gap of 2–6 months in between. Artists for this program apply through an open call and get selected by the decision of both residencies. [2] [3] [4]

Kooshk residency has worked with many residencies such as Artistes en Residence (France), Organhaus Art Space (China), [5] AIR Antwerpen (Belgium), [6] Stiftelsen 3,14 (Norway), [7] Irish Museum of Modern Art (Ireland), Bag Factory (South Africa), Pathshala (Bangladesh), Viafarini (Italy), [8] Khoj (India), Chhaap Foundation (India), Y Residency (Greece), Arquetopia (Mexico) [9] in exchange form.

Kooshk also works in partnership with local and international art Institutes and the cultural sections of foreign embassies in Tehran.

The other program is the Kooshk Artist Residency Award (KARA). An annual award granted to four artists from different countries which get selected by an international team of jury. All expenses including flight tickets, accommodation, living Expenses as well as a modest contribution for materials will be paid by the Kooshk Residency. [10] [11]

[16] [17] Kooshk has two shared Rooms and one single room to accommodate five people at the same time. It also has a separate studio with round the clock accessibility.

The studio premises are located in Malviya Nagar in Delhi.

As a 2017 Research Resident at Eyebeam, Allahyari also worked on the concept of "Digital Colonialism"; a term she has coined since 2015.

Bani Abidi is a Pakistani artist working with video, photography and drawing. She studied visual arts at the National College of Arts in Lahore and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2011, she was invited for the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin program, and since then has been residing in Berlin.

Keyvan Heydari-Shovir, also known as CK1, is an Iranian-born contemporary artist, and street artist. His work combines Iranian traditional culture with contemporary pop culture, and he is a pioneer of Iranian graffiti art. He lives in Los Angeles, and previously lived in San Francisco and Tehran.

Mehrdad Afsari is an Iranian photographer best known for his artistic and unusual landscapes with a conceptual and philosophical approach.

Polina Vladimirovna Kanis is a Russian artist, winner of the Kandinsky Prize (2011) and the Sergey Kuryokhin Prize (2016). She graduated from the Rodchenko Art School (Moscow) in 2011. Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, film festivals and film screenings, including a solo exhibition at the Haus der Kunst Munich (2017)., the VISIO program at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence (2019), the parallel program of the Manifesta 10, in 2015 at the Ural Industrial Biennale of Contemporary Art, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the VI Moscow International Biennale of Young Art (2015), the Moscow International Experimental Film Festival, the Hamburg Short Film Festival (2019) and many others. Her films are in the collections of numerous museums and foundations, including the Fonds régional d'art contemporain Bretagne, Fondazione In Between Art Film, Rome, Foundation Kadist, Paris, etc. Kanis was an artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten programs in Amsterdam (2017-2018) and ISCP New York (2020).

Oindrilla Maity Surai is an Indian independent curator, art critic, and pedagogue based in Kolkata. She has curated exhibitions beyond the paradigms of the commercial gallery. Her major contributions lie in her converting the exhibition spaces as sites of resistances in the post-Covid 19 era, following the country's political conditions and experimenting with the anatomy of what may be termed as the biennale mode of exhibition making in the city's public sphere. She has also participated in several community- based art projects as an artist.
