Prof. S. B. S. Abayakoon is the current chairman of Engineering council Sri Lanka(ECSL) and the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Peradeniya, [1] Sri Lanka. Prior to that, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for four and a half years. He is a Senior professor of Civil Engineering, at Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. He was appointed the 20th vice-chancellor of the university in August 2009. He completed his primary and secondary education at St/Sylvester's College, Kandy.

Education

Abayakoon was educated at the St. Sylvester's College, Kandy. Then he entered to the University of Peradeniya faculty of engineering for his higher education and completed the bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1979 with a First Class Honours degree. He received his post graduate degrees, Master of Applied Science and Doctor of Philosophy, from University of British Columbia, Canada in 1983 and in 1987 respectively. [2]

Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya is one of the eight academic faculties at the university. It is the oldest engineering faculty in Sri Lanka. It offers full-time Undergraduate Courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.Sc.Eng.), and several postgraduate degrees.

Ceylon University College

Ceylon University College was a public university college in Ceylon. Established in 1921, it was Ceylon's first attempt at university education. The college didn't award degrees under its own name but prepared students to sit the University of London's external examination. The college was based in Colombo. The college was merged with Ceylon Medical College in 1942 to form the University of Ceylon. The college was also known as University College, Ceylon; University College, Colombo; and Colombo University College. Its buildings and grounds are now occupied by the University of Colombo which is considered its successor.

The main campus of University of Peradeniya is in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. It has an additional sub-campus in Mahailuppallama, North Central province. Other than that, several farms and agriculture-related institutions operate off the main campus and the sub-campus.

A. Thurairajah Sri Lankan Tamil Academic and vice-chancellor of the University of Jaffna (1934-1994)

Alagiah Thurairajah was a leading Sri Lankan Tamil academic and vice-chancellor of the University of Jaffna.

Samarajeewa "Sam" Karunaratne, FIET, FIEE, FIESL is an emeritus professor of engineering and a leading Sri Lankan academic who is the founding chancellor and president of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology and the former vice-chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. He has held a number of other appointments in the field of higher education in Sri Lanka, including senior professor of electrical engineering and dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, president of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. Karunaratne is a pioneer in the development of the use of computers in the field of engineering and played an important role in the development of information technology education and industry in Sri Lanka.

Mohamed Mujithaba Mohamed Najim is the fourth Vice Chancellor of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka since June 2015. He is the youngest Vice Chancellor appointed to the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka. He is a Professor in Environmental Conservation and Management attached to the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of Kelaniya and has done extraordinary service to Sri Lanka as an Environmentalist. He was awarded many presidential awards for the scientific research he has done on water resources management.

Sampath Amaratunge is the Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Sri Lanka (UGC). He was appointed as the chairman by President Gotabaya Rajapakse on 2 January 2020, assuming the role on 3 January 2020. Amaratunge was previously the Vice chancellor at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka and the Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Directors (CVCD). He was elected as a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities United Kingdom as a member representing constituency II.
