Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's School of Education, Health and Human Behavior is an academic unit of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville located in Edwardsville, Illinois, in the St. Louis metropolitan area of the United States of America.

History

Prior to the development of the Edwardsville campus. the school was established as one of six "Divisions of Academic Programs" for the Residential Centers in Alton and East St. Louis. [2]

Alton is a city on the Mississippi River in Madison County, Illinois, United States, about 15 miles (24 km) north of St. Louis, Missouri. The population was 27,865 at the 2010 census. It is a part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. It is famous for its limestone bluffs along the river north of the city, for its role preceding and during the American Civil War, and as the home town of jazz musician Miles Davis and Robert Wadlow, the tallest known person in history. It was the site of the last Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas debate in October 1858. The former state penitentiary in Alton was used during the Civil War to hold up to 12,000 Confederate prisoners of war.

East St. Louis, Illinois City in Illinois, United States

East St. Louis is a city in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States within Greater St. Louis. It is located directly across the Mississippi River from Downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch National Park. East St. Louis is in what is defined as the Metro-East region of Southern Illinois. Once a bustling industrial center, like many cities in the Rust Belt, East St. Louis has been severely affected by loss of jobs due to industrial restructuring during the second half of the 20th century. In 1950, East St. Louis was the fourth-largest city in Illinois when its population peaked at 82,366. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 27,006, less than one-third of the 1950 census.

When the move was made to the new campus in 1965, these "Divisions" became the Schools of Business, Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences.

The name of the school was changed to the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior on July 1, 2014 to reflect its wider range of academics and research. [3]

Overview

The SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior consists of the Departments of Applied Health, Educational Leadership, Psychology, and Teaching and Learning. [4]

The school supports a number of community outreach activities, including the Attention and Behavior Clinic, the Teaching and Learning Curriculum Center, the SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School, the Southern Illinois Professional Development Center, and the Speech-Language-Hearing Center. [5]

The school is also involved in a variety of other projects, often jointly with other institutions. [6]

Academics

The School of Education, Health and Human Behavior offers 9 baccalaureate degrees, and more than 15 graduate degrees. [7] Among its graduate programs, it offers an Ed.D. in educational leadership.

Faculty

In the Fall of 2018, the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior had 74 tenure-line faculty members, 15 non-tenure-track, full-time instructors, and several part-time lecturers. [8]

The offices of the school and its departments are in Alumni Hall, Founders Hall, and the Vadalabene Center.

The SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior partners with school districts and healthcare agencies throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. [9]

Accreditation

SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior programs are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the National Association of School Psychologists, the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, and the Council on Education for Public Health, as applicable. Its educator-preparation programs are also approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. [10]

WSIE

WSIE is a public radio station in Edwardsville, Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. Owned by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, it is the primary jazz station for the Greater St. Louis area. Rebranding as "The Sound" in August 2016, WSIE broadcasts jazz, smooth jazz, blues, and R&B along with news and student programming, and is the anchor station for SIUE Sports' Cougar Network.

Vadalabene Center building in Illinois, United States

The Sam M. Vadalabene Center--- also known as "The VC" --- is a multi-purpose sports and recreation building on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) that features an arena with a seating capacity of just over 4,000. The facility, which opened in 1984, was named in honor of Illinois State Senator Sam M. Vadalabene (1914–1994), who was a long-time and ardent supporter of the university. The VC is home to the SIUE Cougar basketball, volleyball, and wrestling teams. In addition to the arena, the facility also houses a swimming pool, classrooms, offices, and several activity areas. The Student Fitness Center (SFC), built in 1993, is immediately adjacent to and an integral part of the VC and contains numerous additional recreational and fitness facilities.

SIU Edwardsville Cougars

The SIU Edwardsville Cougars are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), located in Edwardsville, Illinois, United States. The Cougars' athletic program is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) and competes at the NCAA Division I level. The SIUE mascot is Eddie the Cougar #57, and the school colors are red and white. Cougar teams have won seventeen NCAA national championships in five sports.

SIU Edwardsville Cougars wrestling

The SIU Edwardsville Cougars wrestling team represents Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) as an Associate Member of the Southern Conference of NCAA Division I wrestling. The Cougars host their home matches at the Sam M. Vadalabene Center on the university's campus in Edwardsville, Illinois, United States. The Cougars current head coach is Jeremy Spates who took over the program in 2013.
