Nahdlatul Ulama Vocational High School or SMK NU Balikpapan is one of the vocational schools based on Islamic Boarding School located in the middle of Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, precisely in Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Muttaqien (Al-Muttaqien Modern Islamic Boarding School) Balikpapan Jalan Letjend S. Parman Number 47 RT. 22 Sumber Rejo Gn. Guntur, District of Central Balikpapan. SMK Nahdlatul Ulama Balikpapan was established in 2008.

In 2008, SMK Nahdlatul Ulama has established a new skill program that is Multimedia. In 2012, a new skill program has been opened that is Engineering Welding (Las). In 2015, the Shariah Banking program is opened with the support of existing sharia banks in Balikpapan City.

The Background of the School

SMK Nahdlatul Ulama Balikpapan is a private school located in the environment of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in Balikpapan which began operating in 2008. SMK NU Balikpapan was founded in a cooperation between Lembaga Pendidikan Ma'arif NU Balikpapan (LP Ma'arif NU) and Yayasan Pondok Pesantren Modern (YPPM) Al-Muttaqien Balikpapan.

The background of the establishment of SMK Nahdlatul Ulama Balikpapan was thought as the establishment of a public vocational school was a necessity on the future needs of Muslims that were expected to build students who would be able to occupy strategic positions in business and industry field, were able to develop the spirit of Islam ala Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah- which is characteristic of NU- in the place where they work, and become independent and strong person in applying Islamic values.

Al-Muttaqien Modern Islamic Boarding School Balikpapan hold education program for level Kindergarten (Raudlatul Athfal Al-Muttaqien), Primary School (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Al-Muttaqien) and Elementary School (Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Muttaqien), but did not hold education program for level of upper secondary/high school. Meanwhile, the students were interested in continuing to high school and remained staying in the pesantren (mosleem boarding school). Upon this consideration, it was then established cooperation between Lembaga Pendidikan Ma'arif NU Balikpapan and Al-Muttaqien Modern Islamic Boarding School Balikpapan to hold a vocational school namely SMK NU Balikpapan, located in the neighborhood of Al Muttaqien Modern Islamic Boarding School Balikpapan.

Currently, SMK Nahdlatul Ulama Balikpapan is under the auspices of the Foundation of Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Muttaqien Balikpapan. The school operating administration permission was granted by the Education Department of Balikpapan City based on the letter of agreement of the Head of Dinas Pendidikan Kota Balikpapan number: 128 year 2010 about License of Private School Operation.

At the first operating in 2008, SMK Nahdlatul Ulama had only one skill program namely Multimedia. Followed by one skill program namely Welding in 2012 and a new skill program of Shariah Banking in 2015, which was support by Islamic banks in Balikpapan City.

Ulil Abshar Abdalla

Ulil Abshar-Abdalla is an Indonesian scholar affiliated to Jaringan Islam Liberal. He comes from a family of Nahdlatul Ulama background: His father Abdullah Rifa'i is from pesantren Mansajul Ulum in Pati, Central Java, and he is married to the daughter of Mustofa Bisri, an Islamic cleric from Pesantren Raudlatut Talibin, Rembang, Central Java.

Mustofa Bisri

Ahmad Mustofa Bisri is an Indonesian Islamic leader from Indonesia and was the ninth Chief Adviser of Nahdlatul Ulama. He is the head of Pondok Pesantren Raudlatuth Thalibin, Rembang, Central Java Indonesia. Mustofa Bisri, well known as Gus Mus, is famous not only as a kyai—traditional Islamic teacher & leader, but also as a poet and painter.

Hasyim Muzadi

Achmad Hasyim Muzadi was an Indonesian Islamic scholar, cleric, and the fourth Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, from 1999 to 2010. He was the founder and director of the Al-Hikam Islamic boarding school. He was the running mate of Megawati Sukarnoputri in Indonesia's 2004 presidential election, but the ticket lost the election in a runoff. He was a member of Indonesia's Presidential Advisory Board from 2015 until his death. He was a proponent of moderate Islam, which he defined as being neither radical nor liberal, criticizing both Islamic fundamentalism and liberal Islam.

Zuhairi Misrawi is an Indonesian writer. Misrawi first gained public notice as a young intellectual at Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and a traditionalist member of the Sunni Islam group in Indonesia. Misrawi completed his undergraduate education with the Creed-Philosophy Department, Faculty of Usul al-Din, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt (1995–2000). Returning from Cairo, Misrawi was an active participant in the Institute for Study and Human Resource of Nahdlatul Ulama and was the Coordinator of Study and Research in 2000–2002. Ali Yafie

Kiai Hajji Ali Yafie is a faqih and former chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council. He was a prominent figure of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic organization in the world based in Indonesia, and had served as a temporary chief adviser from 1991 to 1992. Ali Alwi Indonesian Islamic scholar and politician

Drs. Kyai Hajji Habib Ali Alwi bin Thohir Al Husainy is an Indonesian politician, da'i, Islamic scholar and founder of the Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Husainy, Serpong, South Tangerang, Banten. At the election of regional head and deputy regional head of Tangerang Regency in 2008, Alwi was nominated by the Democrat Party and the National Awakening Party as a candidate for vice regent along with Usamah Hisyam as a candidate for regent, but this pair was defeated by incumbent candidate Ismet Iskandar with Rano Karno as his deputy. Currently, Alwi serves as a senator representing the province of Banten in the seat of the Regional Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia period 2014–2019.

Nahdlatul Wathan

Nahdlatul Wathan is an Islamic socio-religious organization based in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. The organization was established by Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Majid at Pancor, East Lombok Regency in 1953. The organization serves as a vehicle for societal movement, education, and Islamic proselytization (da'wah). It is currently the largest and the most influential Islamic mass organization in Lombok.

Abdul Wahab Hasbullah

Kyai Hajj Abdul Wahab Hasbullah was one of the founders of the Indonesian Nahdlatul Ulama movement. He also initiated the usage of newspaper for dakwah, with the establishment of the newspaper of Nahdlatul Ulama, Soeara Nahdlatul Oelama. He also created the lyrics for the anthem of Nahdlatul Ulama, Ya Lal Wathon, in 1934. He was declared a National Hero of Indonesia on 7 November 2014 by President Joko Widodo.

Ahmad Muhtadi Dimyathi

Abuya Kyai Hajji Ahmad Muhtadi bin Dimyathi al-Bantani or better known as Abuya Muhtadi is an influential Indonesian Muslim cleric from Banten. He is known as one of the Muslim scholars close to President Joko Widodo. At the Zikir Kebangsaan which was first held by the Indonesian government in the Merdeka Palace in 2017, Muhtadi was one of the religious leaders invited by the president. In the 2019 Indonesian presidential election, he supported a friend who was also a Muslim cleric from Banten, Ma'ruf Amin, who became the running mate of incumbent presidential candidate, Joko Widodo. Even so, in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election, he supported Prabowo Subianto as a candidate for Indonesian President and instructed his students to vote for Subianto.

Zubair Dahlan

Kyai Hajji Zubair Dahlan was an Indonesian ulama of tafsir, fiqh, uṣūl al-fiqh, and tasawwuf from Rembang Regency, Central Java. Every year, in the month of Ramadan, Zubair always routinely teaches the Tafsir al-Jalalayn to his students. In addition, he also active in teaching branches of Arabic grammar and tawhid at the Pesantren Sarang. Zubair is the father of an influential cleric in Indonesia, Maimun Zubair, and a teacher of several Nahdlatul Ulama cleric such as Sahal Mahfudz, Bisri Syansuri, and others. Some of his students later became caregivers and leaders of famous pesantren in Indonesia, such as Pondok Pesantren Lirboyo, Pondok Pesantren Sidogiri, Pondok Pesantren Al-Falah Ploso, Pondok Pesantren Mranggen, and other pesantren.

Asad Syamsul Arifin Indonesian Islamic scholar, National Hero

KHR. As’ad Syamsul Arifin was an Indonesian ulama and co-founder of Nahdatul Ulama. In 2016, he was declared a National Hero of Indonesia.

Kota santri

Kota santri is an epithet used in Indonesia, predominantly in Java, given to a region historically important in the context of Islamic education. The term santri generally means a Muslim student who studies at pesantren, an Islamic boarding school indigenous to the Indonesian archipelago.
