SS Ixion was a Dutch cargo ship that caught fire and sank near the coast of the Netherlands East Indies in 1911. Built in 1892 and originally operated by the Blue Funnel Line, she was transferred to the company's Dutch subsidiary, Nederlandsche Stoomvaart Maatschappij Oceaan, in September 1902. [1]
Ixion was launched on 23 November 1892 and completed the following month at the Scotts & Company shipyard in Greenock, United Kingdom. [2]
The ship was 108.1 metres (354 ft 8 in) long, with a beam of 13 metres (42 ft 8 in) and a depth of 8.1 metres (26 ft 7 in). The ship was assessed at 3,489 GRT. She had a triple expansion steam engine driving a single screw propeller. The engine was rated at 2285 indicated horsepower. [3]
On 1 October 1911, one of Ixion's coal bunkers caught fire off the coast of the Netherlands East Indies, causing her to sink with the loss of 24 of her 47 crew members. Her 23 survivors were rescued by the British steamer Good Hope. [3] At the time, she was carrying a cargo that included copra and tobacco from Tanjung Priok to Amsterdam. [1] The ship's name was revived when another vessel of the same name was launched only 14 months after her loss. [4]
MS Achille Lauro was a cruise ship based in Naples, Italy. It was built between 1939 and 1947 as the ocean liner Willem Ruys for Royal Rotterdam Lloyd. In 1965 Achille Lauro bought the ship, had it converted into a cruise ship, and renamed it after himself. In 1985 it was hijacked by members of the Palestine Liberation Front.
Tango Maru (丹後丸) was a cargo motor ship that was built in Germany in 1926 and sunk off the coast of Bali in 1944. She was launched as Rendsburg for the Deutsch-Australische Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft (DADG), which in 1926 merged with Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG).
SS Camorta was an iron-hulled passenger steamship that was built in Scotland in 1880, and lost with all hands in the Irrawaddy Delta in 1902. The disaster killed more than 700 people.
SS Breda was a Dutch cargo-passenger ship sunk in Scotland during World War II.
SS Dundee was a British steamship that was built in Scotland in 1911 and sunk by enemy action in the Celtic Sea in 1917. She was designed as a coastal passenger and cargo liner for the Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Company Ltd, but in 1915 she was converted into an armed boarding steamer for the Royal Navy. She took part in the Action of 16 March 1917, was sunk by a U-boat six months later, and lost members of her crew in both actions.
SS Karagola was a cargo steamship of the British India Steam Navigation Company (BI). She was built in Scotland in 1887, and operated a regular cargo, passenger and mail service in Burma. In 1901 a fire damaged her beyond repair, so she was scrapped.
SS Iron Chieftain was a bulk carrier that was built in Scotland in 1937 for the Australian Broken Hill Pty, Ltd (BHP) to carry iron ore. A Japanese submarine sank her by torpedo off the coast of New South Wales in 1942, killing 12 of her crew. Her wreck is protected by the Australian federal Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018.
SS Binnendijk was a Holland America Line (NASM) cargo steamship. She was one of NASM's "B" class ships: the company's first cargo ships to be powered by steam turbines. Binnendijk was built in South Holland in 1921, and sunk by a mine in the English Channel in 1939. She was the first ship that NASM lost in the Second World War. Her wreck off the coast of Dorset, England is now a wreck diving site, nicknamed "The Benny".
SS Koning der Nederlanden was a Dutch ocean liner of the Netherland Line. She served from 1872 until her sinking in 1881 in the Indian Ocean while en route from Batavia to Amsterdam. Three of her lifeboats, with a total of 90 passengers and crew, were never found.
SS Van Heemskerk was a passenger steamship that was launched in the Netherlands in 1909 and sunk by enemy action off New Guinea in 1943. She spent most of her career with Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij, based in the Dutch East Indies.
SS Rotterdam was a Dutch passenger ship that ran aground and sunk on the Zeehondenbank near the Dutch island of Schouwen, while she was travelling from New York, United States to Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Ocean Layer was a 2,773 GRT cable ship built as a cargo ship in 1945 by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, German. She was seized in May 1945 before launching and claimed as a war prize. Named Empire Frome, she was allocated to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). The ship was completed in 1948. She was sold and converted to a cable ship in 1953, operating until 1959 when she caught fire at sea. Although she safely reached port, she was declared a constructive total loss and scrapped.
