The John Sherwin was an American steel-hulled, propeller-driven Great Lakes freighter built in 1906 by the West Bay City Shipbuilding Company (F.W. Wheeler Shipyards) of Bay City, Michigan for service on the Great Lakes of North America. She was used to transport bulk cargoes such as coal, iron ore and grain. She served from her launching in 1906 to her scrapping in 1974, in Germany.

The Sherwin was launched on March 10, 1906 as hull number #617. She had a length of 534-feet, a beam of 54-feet and a depth of 31-feet. She was powered by a 1,500 horsepower triple expansion steam engine and fueled by two coal-fired Scotch marine boilers. Her official number was U.S. #202910.

The Sherwin was commissioned by the Gilchrist Transportation Company of Cleveland, Ohio. She entered service on April 13, 1906. Her homeport was Fairport, Ohio. In 1910 Gilchrist Transportation Company's fleet went into receivership . For three years the Sherwin was inactive, but in 1913 she was sold at an auction to the Lackawanna Steamship Company (Pickands Mather & Co., Mgr.) of Cleveland, Ohio. Later in 1913 the fleet was renamed Interlake Steamship Company. [1]

In 1938 the Sherwin was lengthened to 540-feet in length. In 1958 she was renamed Saturn to free up the name John Sherwin for another vessel built for the Interlake fleet. In 1959 the Saturn was sold to the Kinsman Transit Company of Cleveland, Ohio and renamed George M. Steinbrenner. In 1964 the fleet was renamed Kinsman Marine Transit Company. In 1969 the Steinbrenner was renamed Kinsman Venture. [2]

Breakwater for Ontario Hydro

In 1970 the Venture was sold to the Canadian Dredge & Dock Ltd. along with the Ridgetown and the Lackawanna for use as a temporary breakwater Nanticoke, Ontario construction of a power plant for Ontario Hydro.

In August 1973 she was raised and towed to Toronto, Ontario and went into layup for the winter. She was eventually sold to a German scrapyard. On August 3, 1974 she cleared Quebec with the steamer Lackawanna in tow of the Polish tug Jantar. [3]

SS <i>Henry Steinbrenner</i> Dry bulk freighter on the Great Lakes

The Great Lakes freighter SS Henry Steinbrenner was a 427-foot (130 m) long, 50-foot (15 m) wide, and 28-foot (8.5 m) deep, dry bulk freighter of typical construction style for the early 1900s, primarily designed for the iron ore, coal, and grain trades on the Great Lakes. Commissioned by the Kinsman Transit Co. of Cleveland, Ohio she was launched as hull number 14 by Jenks Ship Building Co. of Port Huron, Michigan. Her design featured a forward forecastle containing crew cabins topped with an additional cabin and pilot house. The mid section was a long nearly flat deck over the cargo holds only interrupted by 12 hatches fitted with telescoping type hatch covers. The aft end featured a large cabin situated over the engine room containing the galley, mess rooms, and crew quarters and was topped with a smoke stack and air vents. The Steinbrenner later featured a "doghouse" cabin aft of her smoke stack to house added crew from a change in the crew watch system on the Great Lakes.

Harry Coulby was a British American businessman known as the "Czar of the Great Lakes" for his expertise in managing the Great Lakes shipping fleet of Pickands Mather & Company and the Pittsburgh Steamship Company. After retiring, he served as the first mayor of the newly incorporated town of Wickliffe, Ohio. His former home, Coulallenby, now serves as the city hall of Wickliffe. He chose the design for Great Lakes ore carriers in 1905 that became the standard for the next 65 years, and was elected to the National Maritime Hall of Fame in 1984.

The SS Argus was a steel-hulled Great Lakes freighter, that was constructed as the SS Lewis Woodruff by the American Ship Building Company, and was launched on 5 August 1905. Its original owner was the Gilchrist Transportation Company, based in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1913, the ship was sold to the Interlake Steamship Company, and was renamed the Argus.

She was powered by a 2,000-horsepower (1,500 kW) triple expansion steam engine which was attached to a single fixed-pitch propeller. She was fueled by two coal-fired Scotch marine boilers.

SS <i>William H. Donner</i>

The William H. Donner was an American Great Lakes freighter that was built in 1914 by the Great Lakes Engineering Works of Ashtabula, Ohio for service on the Great Lakes of North America. She was used to transport bulk cargoes such as iron ore, coal, grain and occasionally limestone. She operated from 1914 as a bulk carrier to 1970 when she was converted to a floating crane ship with two cranes. In order to facilitate better maintenance most of the ship's superstructure was eventually removed. It remained in service until 2016, when it was deemed obsolete to requirements. In 2020, the vessel, which consisted of only the hull and minus the cranes, was finally sold for scrap. It was towed on December 17 from Marinette Wisconsin to the Purvis Scrap Yard in Soo, Ontario Canada above the Soo Locks. The dismantling process will begin sometime in early 2021.

SS <i>Onoko</i> Iron hulled Great Lakes freighter.

SS Onoko was an iron hulled Great Lakes freighter. She was launched in 1882 in Cleveland, Ohio as hull number #4, and sank on September 14, 1915 in Lake Superior near Knife River, Minnesota. Onoko is thought to be the prototype for every single steel hulled Great Lakes Bulk carrier that ever sailed. These vessels made possible the cheap transport of bulk cargoes such as iron ore, coal and limestone. Her wreckage still remains on the bottom of Lake Superior and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

MV <i>Kaye E. Barker</i> Self discharging lake freighter

The MV Kaye E. Barker is a self-discharging lake freighter owned and operated by the Interlake Steamship Company. She was originally built as the Edward B. Greene, and was later renamed Benson Ford before being sold to Interlake and named the Barker. It primarily hauls hematite pellets, stone, and coal across the North American Great Lakes.

SS Sir William Siemens was a steel-hulled American lake freighter in service between 1896 and 1944. Built in 1896 by the Globe Iron Works Company of Cleveland for John D. Rockefeller's Bessemer Steamship Company, she was the third of three 432 ft-long (131.7 m) lake freighters, each of which shared the unofficial title of Queen of the Lakes due to their record-breaking length.
