SS Marsland was an English cargo vessel, constructed in 1926. She is most notable for running aground and wrecking on the Vestal Rocks, at North Head, just outside the city of St. John's, Newfoundland. [2]
SS Marsland was constructed in 1926 by Lithgrows Ltd. in Glasgow, Scotland; her engine was constructed by Rankin and Blackmore Ltd. in Greenock, Scotland. She was owned by the Walmar Steamship Company and operated by Kaye, Son and Company Ltd. [3]
Marsland was a frequent visitor to Newfoundland, often visiting St. John's and Corner Brook. She would primarily transport fishery salt from Europe to Newfoundland and would return to Europe carrying salt fish.
In early July 1933, under the command of Capt. Williams, Marsland was en route from Cadiz, Spain, with a load of salt. Upon approaching the Narrows outside St. John's Harbour, on July 2, Capt. Williams noted there was significantly more traffic than usual. A small schooner cut in front of the Marsland, causing Capt. Williams to order the Marslands engines full astern and to wheel hard over. The Marsland swerved and successfully avoided the schooner, but the Marsland grounded on the Vestal Rocks just below Fort Amherst . [4]
Within the hour, tugs Hugh D. and Mouton and the Arras arrived to assist. They attached hawsers and pulled from different directions. The crew of the Marsland quickly put to work dumping the salt cargo over the side to lighten the load and re-float the ship. This was to no avail, as she was firmly wedged between the Vestal Rocks. The ship's agents, Bowring Brothers, recruited the Reid Newfoundland Company steamers, SS Argyle and SS Meigle, to tow the Marsland free. This attempt failed, as the lines kept snapping, and pulled the Marsland on to her broad side and to the edge of an underwater cliff.
The Salvage Association deemed it necessary for an ocean tug to be recruited to free the Marsland. The SS Foundation Franklin arrived on July 9 with divers to assess the damage on the Marsland's hull. The vessel was boarded up, sealed off and the salvage team started pumps. Slowly, the Marsland began to regain some buoyancy. Waves caused the Marsland to crash into the rocks, damaging her hull faster than the salvage team could fix it. Poor weather caused the crew of the Foundation Franklin to abandon the effort and seek shelter in St. John's. After the storm cleared, insurers declared the Marsland a total loss. The crew of the Foundation Franklin retrieved their gear and stripped the Marsland of any remaining fittings and equipment. The Marsland was now sitting completely on her side. [5]
It was rumoured that the visiting HMS Norfolk was going to blow up the Marsland; however, this never occurred.
In October 1933, a heavy storm battered the Marsland and she finally slid from the rocks, down the underwater cliff, coming to a rest on the ocean floor, just outside the Narrows.
The Grey Seas Under is a non-fiction book by Canadian author Farley Mowat about the Atlantic Salvage Tug Foundation Franklin, operated by the firm Foundation Maritime in Canada's Maritime provinces from 1930 to 1948.
SS Catala was a Canadian coastal passenger and cargo steamship built for service with the Union Steamship Company of British Columbia.
The Alphabet Fleet was a fleet of vessels owned and operated by the Reid Newfoundland Company as part of the provisioning of the 1898 Railway contract between the Dominion of Newfoundland and the Reid Newfoundland Company. The vessels were named after places in Scotland, the native homeland of Sir Robert Gillespie Reid, founder of the Reid Newfoundland Company.
SS Benwood was a steam cargo ship of the early twentieth century. Built by Craig, Taylor & Co Ltd., Stockton on Tees, she entered service with Joseph Hoult & Co. Ltd, Liverpool. She passed through several owners, before being lost in a collision off the coast of Key Largo, Florida in 1942. Her wreck is now a popular dive site.
Persier was a 5,382 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1918 as War Buffalo for the British Shipping Controller. In 1919, she was sold to Belgium and renamed Persier. Between 1934 and 1941 she also held a passenger certificate. She was driven ashore on the Icelandic coast in a storm in February 1941 which put her out of action for two years. Returned to service in February 1943, she served until 11 February 1945, when she was torpedoed and sunk by U-1017 with the loss of 20 crew.

Acushnet – a steel-hulled revenue cutter – was launched on 16 May 1908 at Newport News, Virginia, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co.; sponsored by Miss Alayce Duff; and commissioned at Baltimore on 6 November 1908. She saw service as a United States Revenue Cutter Service cutter, a U.S. Navy fleet tug, and as a U.S. Coast Guard cutter. She was taken out of service 8 January 1946.
The Miztec was built as a 3-masted schooner in 1890. She was later converted to a schooner barge and served as a consort for lumber hookers on the Great Lakes. She escaped destruction in a severe 1919 storm that sank her longtime companion, the SS Myron, only to sink on the traditional day of bad luck, Friday the 13th, 1921, with the loss of all hands. She came to rest on Lake Superior's bottom off Whitefish Point near the Myron.
The George Spencer was a wooden lake freighter that sank on along with her schooner barge Amboy on Lake Superior, near Thomasville, Cook County, Minnesota in the Mataafa Storm of 1905. On April 14, 1994, the wrecks of the Spencer and the Amboy were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The SS Lakeland was an early steel-hulled Great Lakes freighter that sank on December 3, 1924, into 205 feet (62 m) of water on Lake Michigan near Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin, United States, after she sprang a leak. On July 7, 2015, the wreck of the Lakeland was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
SS Regulus was a steamship registered in St. John's, Dominion of Newfoundland. She was lost, with all hands, on October 23, 1910 on the rocks known as Hayes' Reef in Leeward Cove, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of Motion Head, Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove, Newfoundland during a southeast gale. The gale was most probably the last remnants of the 1910 Cuba hurricane.
The Amboy was a wooden schooner barge that sank along with her towing steamer, the George Spencer on Lake Superior off the coast of Schroeder, Cook County, Minnesota in the United States. In 1994 the remains of the Amboy were added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Earlshall (73405) was an iron hulled Barque registered in St. John's, Dominion of Newfoundland. It ran aground and wrecked on January 24, 1915 with no loss of life in Leeward Cove, 1.5 miles south of Motion Head, Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove, Newfoundland.
The AmboyandGeorge SpencerShipwreck Site is an archeological shipwreck site which consists of the wrecks of the wooden bulk freighter George Spencer and the wooden schooner-barge Amboy. Both vessels were wrecked during the Mataafa Storm of 1905. In 1994 the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
