The William H. Donner was an American Great Lakes freighter that was built in 1914 by the Great Lakes Engineering Works of Ashtabula, Ohio for service on the Great Lakes of North America. She was used to transport bulk cargoes such as iron ore, coal, grain and occasionally limestone. She operated from 1914 as a bulk carrier to 1970 when she was converted to a floating crane ship with two cranes. In order to facilitate better maintenance most of the ship's superstructure was eventually removed. It remained in service until 2016, when it was deemed obsolete to requirements. In 2020, the vessel, which consisted of only the hull and minus the cranes, was finally sold for scrap. It was towed on December 17 from Marinette Wisconsin to the Purvis Scrap Yard in Soo, Ontario Canada above the Soo Locks. The dismantling process will begin sometime in early 2021. [1]

History

The Donner was launched on May 7, 1914, as hull number #134. She had a length of 524-feet, a beam of 54-feet and a height of 30-feet. She was built using the Isherwood System of longitudinal construction of ships, powered by a 1,900 horsepower triple expansion steam engine and fueled by two coal-fired Scotch marine boilers. She had the official number U.S. #212354. She was commissioned by the Mahonig Steamship Company ( M.A. Hanna & Co., Mgr.) of Cleveland, Ohio. Her homeport was Fairport, Ohio. She entered service on July 7, 1914, clearing Ecorse, Michigan bound for Cleveland, Ohio. [2]

In 1929 the Donner was transferred to the Bethlehem Transportation Corporation's Ore Steamship Company (H.K. Oakes, Mgr.) of Cleveland. In 1955 she was re-registered to Wilmington, Delaware. In 1956 she was converted to a crane ship with two revolving cranes by the American Ship Building Company of Toledo, Ohio.

In 1970 the Donner was sold to the Miller Compressing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin for use as a freight transfer vessel at Milwaukee. In 1992 she was sold to K & K Warehousing and towed to Menominee, Michigan, then later to Marinette, Wisconsin to again serve as a freight transfer vessel. [3]

In 2002 the Donner's pilothouse was removed. The final retirement of the old vessel came in March 2016 - after 102 years of service - when she was towed to the Menominee River and moored to await scrapping. The scrap tow was conducted in December 2020. [4]

She is the current Queen of the Lakes, an unofficial but widely recognized title given to the longest vessel active on the Great Lakes. Launched as MV William J. De Lancey, she was the last of the thirteen "thousand footers" to enter service on the Great Lakes, and was also the last Great Lakes vessel built at the American Ship Building Company yard in Lorain, Ohio. The MV Paul R. Tregurtha is the current flagship for the Interlake Steamship Company.

<i>R. J. Hackett</i> (steamer) Historic shipwreck in Lake Michigan

R. J. Hackett was a steamer built in 1869. When first launched, the ship's wide cross-section and long midships hold were unconventional, but the design's advantages in moving cargo through the inland lakes spawned many imitators. The Hackett is recognized as the first Great Lakes freighter, a vessel type that has dominated Great Lakes shipping for over 100 years. In 1905, the Hackett caught fire and sank on Whaleback Shoal in Green Bay, 9.5 miles (15.3 km) southeast of the Cedar River in Menominee County, Michigan. The wreck site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

SS <i>St. Marys Challenger</i> Lake freighter

The SS St. Marys Challenger is a freight-carrying vessel operating on the North American Great Lakes built in 1906. Originally an ore boat, she spent most of her career as a cement carrier when much larger ore boats became common. After a 107-year-long working career as a self-propelled boat, she was converted into a barge and paired with the tug Prentiss Brown as an articulated tug-barge. Before conversion, she was the oldest operating self-propelled lake freighter on the Great Lakes, as well as being one of the last freight-carrying vessels on the Great Lakes to be powered by steam engines.

Orin William Angwall or Orin W. Angwall was an American lake captain, commercial fisherman, and politician. He served in the Wisconsin legislature and was mayor of Marinette.

Augustus B. Wolvin was a 560 ft (170 m) long Great Lakes freighter that had a 63-year career on the Great Lakes. Augustus B. Wolvin was a product of the American Shipbuilding Company of Cleveland, Ohio. She was built for the Acme Steamship Company of Duluth, Minnesota.

SS Senator was a steel-hulled Great Lakes freighter that sank on Lake Michigan with the loss of nine lives and 268 Nash automobiles, on Halloween of 1929 after she was rammed in heavy fog by the bulk carrier Marquette. She lies in 450 feet (140 m) of water 16 miles northeast of Port Washington, Wisconsin. On April 12, 2016 her wreck was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The SS Atlanta was a wooden hulled Great Lakes steamer that sank in Lake Michigan off the coast of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, United States, after a failed attempt of her being towed to shore ultimately killing 5 out of her 7 crew members on board. Her wreckage still remains at the bottom of the lake, and on November 6, 2017, the wreck of the Atlanta was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Overlakes Freight Corporation was shipping agent company founded in New York City on April 21, 1932, by William M. Nicholson. Overlakes Freight Corporation operated Liberty Ships during and for post World War II efforts. Most of Overlakes Freight Corporation ships were purchased by the War Shipping Administration for the war. Nicholson also owned the Nicholson Universal Steamship Company, Nicholson, Erie, Dover, Ferry Line, Nicholson Terminal & Dock Company, Aqua Terminal & Dock Corporation and the Nicholson Transit Company.
