Rembrandt van Rijn is a Vanuatu-flagged three-masted schooner currently employed for Arctic cruises by owner and operator Oceanwide Expeditions. She was built in 1924 as a fishing lugger and has served as a coaster and schooner under the flags of the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Panama. The ship has been lengthened three times, fitted with four different engines, and has had a change of IMO number during her career on the seas.
Rembrandt van Rijn was built in 1924 as the fishing lugger Jacoba by Gebroeders Boot, Leiderdorp, South Holland, Netherlands, for Gebr. Bloot, Katwijk, South Holland. She was launched in November of 1924. Her port of registry was Katwijk, and she was allocated the registration KW146. In 1929, Jacoba was sold to K.K. Jagemann and R.S. Karstens, Hamburg, Germany. She was converted to a motor vessel and was fitted with a diesel engine. Jacoba was then renamed Anna Marta, after which the code letters RGPQ were allocated. [1] Her port of registry at the time was Hamburg. [2]
On 18 September 1929, Anna Marta was sold to R.S. Karstens. From 1931 to April 1933, she was operated under the management of H. Böse, Altona, Germany. [3] Management then passed to Heinscke & Co. [4] In May 1933, a new diesel engine was fitted. In January 1934, her code letters were changed to DJFI. In March 1933, Anna Marta was lengthened and rebuilt as a three-masted schooner at Kiel. [1] By 1937, Anna Marta was again operated by R. Karstens. [5] She was rebuilt again in 1939. [1]
In 1949, Anna Marta's code letters were changed to DGCL. In April 1951, she was lengthened at Stade, West Germany, and had a new engine in July. On 19 May 1952, Anna Marta was sold to M. Karstens and H. Pape, Hamburg, West Germany. Ownership passed to Karstens & Pape on 13 August 1954. Another new engine was fitted in 1957. [1]
On 26 January 1962, Anna Marta was sold to H.E. Hansen, Marstal, Denmark, and was renamed Minde. [1] Her port of registry was Marstal, and the code letters OZFX were allocated. [6] With the introduction of fixed Lloyd's Register numbers in the late 1960s, Minde was allocated 5235715, which later became her IMO number. In 1971, she was sold to A.K. Nielsen, Broager, Denmark, and was renamed Klaus D. [1] Her port of registry was Egersund, but her code letters remained unchanged. [7] On 22 March 1974, her home port was changed to Broager, [1] although she remained with Egersund as her port of registry. [8] During one of these rebuilds, the ship was derigged and returned to being a motor vessel. Klaus D was a refrigerated cargo vessel. [9]
In 1984, Klaus D was sold to A.M. Tichelaar, Leeuwarden, Netherlands. In August 1985, she was sold to Stichting Werkgelegenheid Projecten, Groningen, Netherlands, and was renamed Enno Doedens Star. Two new diesel engines were fitted to her in 1986. This was followed by a rebuild to a three-masted schooner at Vlissingen, Zeeland, Netherlands, in 1993. She was renamed Rembrandt van Rijn and reflagged to Panama. The call sign 3FVE7 was allocated. From 1994 to 1996, Rembrandt van Rijn operated cruises to Spitsbergen, Norway. In 1998 or 1999 a different IMO number, 8941808, was allocated. She was sold in October 1998 to Balder Nieuwland B.V., Vlissingen, and placed under the management of Oceanwide Nautical Services B.V. Rembrandt van Rijn operated cruises between Panama and the Galapagos Islands from 1998 to 2001. In 2007, she was laid up at Ghent, Belgium. [1]
In December 2011, Rembrandt van Rijn was reflagged to Vanuatu. [1] She was given her current call sign, YJRJ3, and the MMSI number 576988000. [10] Rembrandt van Rijn has a crew of 12 and can accommodate 33 passengers. [11]
Jacoba was 29.21 metres (95 ft 10 in) long with a beam of 6.76 metres (22 ft 2 in) when built. She was assessed at 138 GRT, 78 NRT. [1] Anna Marta was 29.20 metres (95 ft 10 in) long, with a beam of 6.77 metres (22 ft 3 in) and a depth of 2.62 metres (8 ft 7 in). [3] Her two-cylinder single-cycle single-action diesel engine had cylinders of 338 mm (135⁄16 in) bore by 349 mm (133⁄4 in) stroke. [2] The engine was built by Deutsche Kromhout Motorfabriek in Brake, Lower Saxony, Germany [1] [2] and rated at 61 nhp. [2]
Her engine, fitted in 1933, was a three-cylinder four-stroke single-cycle single-action model NE 33 diesel engine, with cylinders of 273 mm (103⁄4 in) bore by 419 mm (169⁄16 in) stroke. It was made by Deutsche Werke A.G., Kiel and was rated at 88 nhp. [4]
Following her lengthening in 1933, Anna Marta was 33.16 metres (108 ft 10 in) long, with a beam of 6.63 metres (21 ft 9 in). Her depth was 2.90 metres (9 ft 6 in), [12] with a draught of 3.35 metres (11 ft 0 in). She was assessed at 174 GRT, 98 NRT. After her 1939 rebuild, she was assessed as 211 GRT, 135 NRT. [1]
Following her 1951 rebuild, Anna Marta was 39.06 metres (128 ft 2 in) long, 6.71 metres (22 ft 0 in) beam, with a depth of 3.48 metres (11 ft 5 in) and a draught of 3.08 metres (10 ft 1 in). The engine fitted that year was built by Deutz AG and was rated at 200 horsepower (150 kW). The engine fitted in 1957 was a 280 horsepower (210 kW) model NE-57 diesel engine by Alpha Diesels A/S. She was assessed at 272 GRT, 121 NRT, 350 DWT. [1]
Following her 1993 rebuild, Enno Doedens Star was 39.22 metres (128 ft 8 in) long, had a beam of 6.65 metres (21 ft 10 in), a depth of 3.59 metres (11 ft 9 in), and a draught of 2.80 metres (9 ft 2 in). [1] She was assessed at 307 GRT, 123 NRT, 350 DWT. [10] Her engines are Cummins VTA-903-M diesel engines with 740 horsepower (550 kW) each. They can propel the ship at 9 knots (17 km/h). [1]
American science fiction writer Frederik Pohl dedicated his 1997 book The Siege to Eternity to his shipmates on Rembrandt van Rijn. [13]
Odd I was a 156 GRT Norwegian whaler, launched in 1912 as Dominion II. She was renamed Odd I in 1921 and retained that name until 1963 when she became Annstein, except for a period during World War II when she served as a Vorpostenboot for the German Kriegsmarine under the name Orkan. She was condemned in 1971 and was deleted from the Norwegian Ship Register on 15 March 1971.
Ceuta was a 2,719 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1929 for the Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Reederei. She was sunk during an air raid in 1943, but later raised, repaired and returned to service. She was seized as a war prize in 1945, passed to the British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Camel.
Ricardor Manuel was an 873 GRT coaster which was built in 1940 by Goole Shipbuilding & Repairing Co Ltd, Goole as Empire Cliff for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1945 she was sold and renamed Marna. A further sale in 1960 saw her renamed Harcliff. In 1963, she was sold to a Panamanian company and renamed Ricardo Manuel. She sank in 1971 after a collision with another ship at the entrance to Casablanca harbour, Morocco.
Empire Chancellor was a 9,917 GRT tanker which was built in 1945 by Sir J Laing & Sons Ltd, Sunderland for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1946 she was sold into merchant service and renamed Stanglen. Further sales saw her renamed Newminster in 1952 and Stanpark in 1954. In 1959 she was sold and renamed Granny Suzanne. She was scrapped in 1960.
Goodleigh was a 3,857 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1928 by J L Thompson & Sons Ltd, Sunderland for the Dulverton Steamship Company. In 1937 she was sold to Fisser & Van Doornum, Emden and was renamed Christian Van Doornum. She was in port in Canada when war was declared between the United Kingdom and Germany. She was seized as a war prize and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Renamed Empire Commerce, she served until 9 June 1940 when she struck a mine off Margate, Kent. She was beached and her cargo was salvaged, but Empire Commerce was deemed a constructive total loss and was scrapped in situ. She was the first Empire ship lost through enemy action in the Second World War.
Corona was a 1,549 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1922 by Lübecker Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft, Lübeck, Germany as Ingrid Horn for German owners. She was sold in 1926 to Danish owners and renamed Nelly. In 1936, she was sold to Finnish owners and renamed Corona.
Clary was a 215 GRT coaster that was built in 1939 by Van Diepen Scheepswerf Gebroeders NV, Waterhuizen, Netherlands, for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Nyborg, Denmark and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condee. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and was renamed Condee. In 1950, a further sale saw her renamed Aisne. In 1960, she was sold to Jersey and renamed Clary. In 1975, she was sold to Algerian owners and renamed Marie Elizabeth but on 20 February 1976 she caught fire and was declared a constructive total loss.
Pickhuben was a 999 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1923 by Union Giesserei, Königsberg for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Lübeck, Germany, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condicote. She was passed to the Norwegian Government in 1946 and renamed Grimsnes. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and was renamed Tungenes, serving until 1961 when she was scrapped.
I.P. Suhr was a 1,649 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1926 by Ostseewerft AG, Stettin as Siegmund for German owners. After a sale in 1929 she was renamed Thielbek. A further sale in 1939 saw her renamed Ingrid Traber. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condover. In 1946, she was passed to the Norwegian Government and renamed Fornes. She was sold into merchant service in 1948 and renamed I.P. Suhr, serving until December 1950 when she capsized and sank.
Dorothea Weber was a 190 GRT three-masted Schooner that was built in 1922 as the barge Lucy by J Oelkers, Hamburg. She was later renamed Midgard I, Midgard IV and then Elisabeth before a sale in 1935 saw her fitted with a diesel engine and renamed Dorothea Weber. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Guernsey, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Cononley.
Akademik Karpinsky was a 1,122 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1936 as Thalia by Nordseewerke, Emden, Germany for German owners. She was interned at Cadiz, Spain in 1943, and surrendered to the Allies in May 1945. Thalia passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Consett. In 1946, she was transferred to the Soviet Union and renamed Akademik Karpinsky, serving until 31 August 1953 when she foundered.
Scantic was a 326 GRT coaster that was built in 1936 by Noord Nederland Scheepsmakkerij, Groningen as Dr Colijn for a Dutch owner. In 1940, she was transferred to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Crocus. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Stainton. A further sale in 1951 saw her renamed Benwood. In 1955 she was sold to Finland and renamed Monica. A further sale to Sweden in 1957 saw her renamed Mona. In 1963, she was sold to Denmark and renamed Scantic, serving until 7 December 1964 when she foundered in St Georges Channel, United Kingdom.
The Bernhard Blumenfeld was a 2,879 GRT cargo ship that was completed in 1921 as the SS Dalewood by Eltringham's, Ltd., Willington on Tyne, England. She was sold to a German company in 1923 and renamed the Bernhard Blumenfeld. She was sold again in 1938 and renamed the Carl Jüngst.
Eidsvold was a 4,184 GRT motor vessel built in 1934 at Gothenburg for Norwegian Owners. She was torpedoed and sunk in 1942 by the Japanese submarine I-159.
Empire Fisher was a 268 GRT trawler that was built as Herrlichkeit in 1922 by Reiherstieg Schiffswerfte & Maschinenfabrik, Hamburg, Germany for the Nordsee Deutsche Hochsee Fischerei Bremen-Cuxhaven AG. She was captured in 1940 by HMS Glasgow, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Fisher. She was sold in 1948. Sold for scrapping in 1952, she was resold to Ireland and scrapped later that year.
Bulgaria was a 4,191 GRT cargo ship that was built as Empire Flamborough in 1945 by William Pickersgill & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, County Durham, United Kingdom for the Ministry of Transport (MoT). She was sold to Norway in 1946 and renamed Vindeggen. A further sale to Bulgaria in 1948 saw her renamed Bulgaria. She served until 1976 when she was scrapped.
August Wriedt was a weather ship built in 1929 as the fishing vessel Dolly Kühling. She was renamed August Wriedt in 1935. She was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1940 and captured by HMS Malvernian on 29 May 1941. She served as HMS Maria, a wreck dispersal vessel, until 1950 and was scrapped in 1951.
Preußen was a fishing trawler requisitioned during World War II by the Kriegsmarine for use as a Vorpostenboot. She was built in 1930 as August Wriedt, and was renamed Preußen in 1933. On 13 August 1944, she was sunk off Langeoog by Bristol Beaufighter aircraft of 254 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Hermann was a Kriegsmarine weather ship that was built in 1929 as the fishing trawler J. F. Schröder. She was renamed Sachsen in 1933 and requisitioned in 1940, serving as WBS 1 Sachsen. She was renamed Hermann in 1942, serving until scuttled off the coast of Greenland in June 1943.
Marilyn Anne is a three-masted auxiliary schooner that was built in 1919 as Frem by her Danish owner. She was sold to Sweden in 1938 and later renamed Vestvåg. In 1958, she was sold to Denmark and renamed Vest. Following her sale to an American owner in 1968, she was renamed Marilyn Anne. In 1977, she became a training ship for disadvantaged Danish children.
