Sadeka Halim is an academic. She is the former and first female vice-chancellor of Jagannath University, appointed by the President of Bangladesh since November 2023. [1] She was a professor at Dhaka University and the first female dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the university. [2] She is the first female to be the Information Commissioner of Bangladesh. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Early life and education

Halim's father, Fazlul Halim Chowdhury, was a vice-chancellor of the University of Dhaka. She passed SSC exam from Udyon High School and HSC exam from Holycross School and College. She graduated from the University of Dhaka. [7]

Career

In 1988, Halim was appointed as a teacher in the Department of Social Sciences of University of Dhaka. Later she received a second postgraduate and PhD degree from McGill University of Canada with Commonwealth Scholarship in 2000. [8] She then completed the post-doctorate of the Commonwealth Staff Fellowship from the University of Bath of the United Kingdom. From July 2009 to June 2014, she served as the first woman information commissioner. Besides, she served as a syndicate member of the University of Dhaka from 2004 to 2009, and she was a member of the executive council of the Teachers' Association and three times a member of the Senate. She was a member of the National Education Policy Committee-18 of 2009 special educationists committee. About 50 research articles have been published in national and international journals. Issues related to gender equality, forest and land, development, indigenous issues, rights of human rights and information. [9] [10] [11] [12]

In September 2022, the government broke the trustee board of Manarat International University and created a new board which included Halim. [13] In 2022, she became a member of Awami League Advisory Council. [14]

She resigned as a VC of JnU on 11 August 2024, amid student protests. [15] [16]

Controversy

Different public universities teacher have raised allegations of plagiarism in a research paper produced by Halim. [17] Later, she issued legal notice against a Dhaka University (DU) reporter along with four others for publishing news of allegedly plagiarism in her research paper. [18]

The Bangla Academy is the official regulatory body of the Bengali language in Bangladesh. It is an autonomous institution funded by the Government of Bangladesh that fosters the Bengali language, literature and culture, works to develop and implement national language policy and conducts original research in Bengali. Established in 1955, it is located in the Burdwan House in Shahbagh, Dhaka, within the grounds of the University of Dhaka and Suhrawardy Udyan. The Bangla Academy hosts the annual Ekushey Book Fair.

Farzana Islam is a Bangladeshi academic. She is a former vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University during 2014-2022. In 2014, she became the first female vice-chancellor of a public university in Bangladesh.She was one of the most controversial vice chancellor. She allegedly accused of different irregularities and corruption by both Students and Teachers. They also published a book. The 224-page book features reports on different irregularities and corruptions published in different newspapers.

Shamsuzzaman Khan was a Bangladeshi academician, folklorist, and writer who served as president of Bangla Academy since June 2020 until his death in April 2021. He also served as the director general of the academy during 2009–2018. He was notable for editing book series on folk culture of 64 different districts in 64 volumes and collections of folklore series in 114 volumes. Syed Anwar Husain is a Bangladeshi academic and historian. He is a former director general of the Bangla Academy. He is the president of the Bangladesh Itihas Samiti.

Md. Imdadul Hoque was a Bangladeshi academic and vice-chancellor of Jagannath University. He was a professor at the Botany Department of the University of Dhaka.

Zafar Ahmed is a Justice of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.

Anwar Hossain is a Bangladeshi biologist and vice-chancellor of Jashore University of Science and Technology. Hossain was a professor of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Dhaka.
