Sagnarigu is a community and capital of Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. [1]

History

Yakubu II was born in Sangarigu in 1945 and later went on to rule as King of Dagbon until his assassination on 27 March 2002.

On 7 November 2012, Alhaji Saani Abdul-Razak, the Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education observed that violence promotes the destruction of pre-mature society. He convinced the people of Sagnarigu to despise violence and promote peace in the community.

Today, the community maintains its own chief palace for cultural events and is the seat of the Paramount Chief.

Tamale Metropolitan District is one of the sixteen districts in Northern Region, Ghana. Originally created as a municipal district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Tamale Municipal District, which was created from the former West Dagomba District Council, until it was elevated to metropolitan district assembly status in August 2004. Later, a small northern part of the district was split off to create Sagnarigu District on 24 June 2012 ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Tamale Metropolitan District. The metropolis is located in the northwest part of Northern Region and has Ghana as its capital city. The metro poly is the central business hub of the region.

Jisonaayili is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a linear settlement concentrated along the Jisonayili Road that divides the community into two halves. Its immediate neighbors are Kanvili, Gurugu, Chogu-Yapalsi and Kamina Barracks. The community is served with a public library located in the Jisonaayili Community Center.

Gumani is a community in Tamale Metropolitan District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It has a linear settlement with roads constructed within the community linking it to the Tamale-Bolgatanga trunk road. It is a populated community.

Yilonaayili is a community in Tamale Metropolitan District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is located along the Tamale-Bolgatanga trunk road. The community has nucleated settlement. The people there are predominantly farmers.

Kulmanga is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Yong-duuni is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a less populated community. The inhabitants of the community are predominantly farmers and the women are also into Shea butter production. It has a settlement population of two thousand(2000),2020.

Katariga is a small community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It has a dispersed settlement having Kumbuyili, Sugashee and Gurugu as its neighboring communities. Farming is the most common occupation in this community. It is one of the few communities headed by a female(Tindana) in the Northern Region.

Gurugu is a community in Sagnarigu Municipal in the Northern Region of Ghana. Its neighboring communities are Jisonaayili, Sognaayili, Kumbuyili and Chogu-Yapalsi.

Kpalsi is a community in Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Choggu-Yapalsi is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a nucleated but populated community located along the Tamale-Kumbungu road having Jisonaayili, Gurugu and Choggu Mmanaayili as its immediate neighbors.

Kumbuyili is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a dispersed settlement located along the Tamale-Kumbungu road having Gurugu, Malshagu and Zagyuri as its neighboring communities.

Fuo, is a community in Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is located in the Eastern part of Tamale, Fuo has a community hospital Fuo Community Hospital. It has been one of the fastest and peaceful developing community in the Sagnarigu Municipality.

Choggu Mmanaayili is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is located along the Tamale-Kumbungu trunk road. It is a populated community with nucleated settlement.

Sognaayili is a community in Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region of Ghana. It is a less populated community with nucleated settlements. A large portion of men in the community are farmers while rest work with livestock and poultry production.

Tamale College of Education is a teacher education college in Tamale (Sagnarigu District, Northern Region, Ghana). The college is located in Northern Zone zone. It is one of the 46 public colleges of education in Ghana. The college participated in the DFID-funded T-TEL programme. For the 2018/2019 academic year, the institution received 1086 admission applications but admitted 543. The rest were rejected due to infrastructural challenges.

Sagnarigu is one of the constituencies represented in the Parliament of Ghana. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. Tamale South is located in the Tamale Municipal district of the Northern Region of Ghana.

However, on 15 March 2018, it was elevated to municipal district assembly status to become Sagnarigu Municipal District. The municipality is located in the northwest part of Northern Region and has Sagnarigu as its capital city.
