Francis Parker School of Louisville, originally known as St. Francis School, [1] is a private, coeducational, college-preparatory day school in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Founded in 1977, it is an outgrowth of St. Francis School, in Goshen, a K-8 school founded on the developmental education model a decade earlier. Both schools are non-sectarian, but maintain an association with the Episcopal Diocese of Louisville, and a historical link to St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church in Louisville. The church and the schools are named after St. Francis of Assisi.
St. Francis High School was founded in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, in 1976, by Tom Pike, a group of parents and board members. [2] Pike, who would be headmaster until he retired, had been Acting Head of School at St. Francis School in Goshen. St. Francis at that time included kindergarten through nineth grade; with this change, it became K-8, and the rising 9th grade migrated to the new high school. The founders chose a site downtown in order to give their adolescent students easy access to cultural institutions and resources such as the main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library and close proximity to the adult world they would soon be joining. [3] St. Francis opened in September 1977 with 60 students and 14 teachers and staff. [4] The school was housed in the historic former Downtown YMCA building at 233 W. Broadway, a 1913 structure in the Beaux Arts style listed in the National Register of Historic Places. [5] [6] Originally occupying the building's third floor, the school shared athletic facilities with the Downtown Athletic Club, including the former YMCA's pool, squash court, and indoor track, and basement theater. By 1981, the school had grown to 123 students and 18 teachers, and no longer fit on the third floor. When Holly Wiedemann, a Lexington-based developer who focused on adaptive reuse of historic structures, renovated the building as a mixed-facility incorporating residential, retail, and office space, the school moved the main lobby and offices to the basement level in order to expand classroom space on the 3rd floor. As the school approached its 25th year, Pike, who had been serving as head of school since its founding, and the school's directors sought to expand and revitalize St. Francis High School. Following a $6 million fundraising campaign, St. Francis High School and a private partner undertook a major redesign and renovation of the entire building, with the school occupying the northern half and apartments and commercial spaces the southern half. Undertaken by Potter & Associates Architects and completed in 2003, the award-winning renovation spread school operations from the ground through third floors. [8]
Pike retired after the 2002–03 school year. Alexandra Schreiber Thurstone ('84) is the current head of school.
In 2012, St. Francis High School merged with sister school, St. Francis School, to form the current Preschool-12th grade St. Francis School. [9] Although the merger had been discussed over the past several decades, the boards of both sister schools agreed the schools were ready to consolidate all three campuses, which share similar educational philosophies, into the St. Francis School: "the regional center of progressive learning where students grow into mindful, informed young adults." [10]
Thurstone remained head of school after the merger. In 2016, she led a new expansion of the school that would expand its footprint in the building by 50%. [11] The expansion would also move the school's entrance from 3rd Street back to the building's main entrance, [11] where it had been when the school first opened its doors in 1977.
By design, the school has had one of the smallest 9-12 student enrollments in the country, typically no more than 145 students. The founders of the school wanted to maintain the low student-to-teacher ratio of the lower school and facilitate a more collegial atmosphere between teachers and students. Accordingly, the new facilities are designed for a maximum student body of 180.
Within its developmental learning background, St. Francis has few rules, no dress code, and a lack of formality. The school does not track its students by ability, believing all learners can benefit from interacting with each other as well as with the teacher. Nevertheless, the curriculum is academically rigorous, with emphasis on written and spoken expression in all classes. College Board Advanced Placement courses are available in many subjects in the upper grades.
With a student teacher ratio of 8:1, maximum class size of 18 and an average size in 2006-2007 of 11. The mission is to prepare students academically and personally for college and life in a rigorous educational environment that challenges them to think independently, respect individuality, and act with integrity.
Students taking AP tests score 3 or higher over 80% of the time and gain college credit and/or advanced placement in college courses. They do not publish their standardized test scores. Currently the school offers over 14 AP classes.
The school colors are red and blue. The mascot of the school is a red Wyvern rampant.
Athletic teams include soccer, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, tennis, track, and lacrosse.
Academic teams include Quick Recall (a quiz bowl competition), chess, Science Olympiad, Math League and Destination ImagiNation.
The school is an accredited member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), and belongs to the Kentucky Association of Independent Schools (KAIS) and the Louisville Independent Schools Coalition (LISC).
Frankfort is the capital city of the U.S. state of Kentucky and the seat of Franklin County. It is a home rule-class city. The population was 28,602 at the 2020 United States census. Located along the Kentucky River, Frankfort is the principal city of the Frankfort, Kentucky Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Franklin and Anderson counties. It is the 4th least populous state capital in the United States, and the 13th most populous city in Kentucky.

duPont Manual High School is a public magnet high school located in the Old Louisville neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, United States. It serves students in grades 9–12. It is a part of the Jefferson County Public School District. DuPont Manual is recognized by the United States Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School.
Anchorage is a home rule-class city in eastern Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,500 as of the 2020 census, up from 2,348 at the 2010 census and an estimated 2,432 in 2018. It is a suburb of Louisville.
Bowling Green is a home rule-class city and the county seat of Warren County, Kentucky, United States. Founded by pioneers in 1798, Bowling Green was the provisional capital of Confederate Kentucky during the American Civil War. As of the 2020 census, its population of 72,294 made it the third-most-populous city in the state after Louisville and Lexington; its metropolitan area, which is the fourth largest in the state after Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky, had an estimated population of 179,240; and the combined statistical area it shares with Glasgow has an estimated population of 233,560.
Ballard High School is a high school in the eastern suburbs of Louisville, Kentucky, and is a part of the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) school district. The school opened in the fall of 1968. The first students were in grades 7-9, and a grade was added each year as the building was expanded. This kept the school system from having to transfer upper class students from other high schools. The first class graduated in 1972. From its founding until the mid-1980s the principal was Patrick Crawford. Sandy Allen served from the mid-1980s to the 2003–2004 school year. The principal from 2004 through 2013 was Jim Jury. Staci Edelman was the 4th and shortest standing principal, from 2015 to 2017, with a term marked by racial tension and controversy. The current principal is Jason Neuss. The school offers grades 9-12.

Crescent Hill is a neighborhood four miles (6 km) east of downtown Louisville, Kentucky USA. This area was originally called "Beargrass" because it sits on a ridge between two forks of Beargrass Creek. The boundaries of Crescent Hill are N Ewing Ave to the St. Matthews city limit by Brownsboro Road to Lexington Road. Frankfort Avenue generally bisects the neighborhood.
Midway University is a private Christian university in Midway, Kentucky. Related by covenant to the Christian Church, it enrolls approximately 1,900 students earning two-year and four-year degrees as well as master's degrees. Midway was the only women's college in Kentucky until 2016 when it began admitting male undergraduate students.
Portland Christian School, based in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, is a private Christian school traditionally supported and affiliated with those Churches of Christ which held to a premillennial eschatology characteristic of Robert Henry Boll. Founded in 1924 in the rear of the Portland Avenue Church of Christ in the Portland neighborhood with Boll's support, today the school system has over four hundred students at its campus on the east side of Louisville.

Mercy Academy, in full, The Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, is an all-girls Roman Catholic high school in Louisville, Kentucky that opened in 1885 and is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.
The Titche–Goettinger Building is one of Dallas' original broad-front department stores located along St. Paul Street between Main and Elm Street in downtown Dallas, Texas (USA). The structure currently houses apartments, retail space, and the Universities Center at Dallas. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places both individually and as a contributing property in the Dallas Downtown Historic District and is a Dallas Landmark as part of the Harwood Street Historic District. It is also located across the street from Main Street Garden Park.
The Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery is a Roman Catholic congregation of women. whose motherhouse, St. Walburg Monastery, is located at Villa Madonna, in Villa Hills, Kentucky. It was founded in 1859 by three sisters of the Benedictine congregation of Mount St. Benedict Monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania, who came to Covington to teach the German-speaking children of St. Joseph's parish. They became an independent congregation in 1867. Villa Madonna Academy, a private, Roman Catholic K-12 school is an integral part of the sisters' ministry in Kentucky. Besides operating the Academy, the sisters taught in parish schools and staffed St. John's Orphanage.
Flaget High School was a Catholic College preparatory high school in Louisville, Kentucky's West End from 1942 until 1974. It was located throughout its existence at 44th and River Park Drive, in the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville.

St. Francis Episcopal School, formerly St. Francis Episcopal Day School, is a private Episcopal school located on two campuses in the City of Piney Point Village and the Memorial area of Houston, Texas, United States. In fall 2018, St. Francis opened a high school on the Couper Campus, and its inaugural freshman class graduated in 2022. The Piney Point Campus and affiliated parish, located at 335 Piney Point Rd., house the lower and middle schools. The Couper Campus is home to primary and upper school facilities, along with athletic fields used by the middle school. With over 900 students, St. Francis Episcopal School was once the largest K–8 Episcopal parish day school in the United States. In the 1998–1999 school year, St. Francis was named a National Blue Ribbon School.
The L&N Station is a former rail passenger station in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States, located in the downtown area at the northern end of the World's Fair Park. Built in 1905 by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and designed by its chief engineer, Richard Montfort, the station was renovated for use in the 1982 World's Fair, and is currently home to Knox County's STEM-based magnet high school, the L&N STEM Academy. In 1982, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and role in Knoxville's transportation history.
