Salvador Lucas Barbier or SLB (born July 12, 1969) is an American designer and creative director, widely known for his innovative and trailblazing professional skateboarding career. [2] [3]

Barbier was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. [4] [5]

Career

An early pioneer of the signature skate shoe market, Barbier designed and endorsed the Etnies SLB 23, a shoe critically regarded as "one of the most iconic skate shoes of all time." [6] The shoe design, initially released in 1993, has been reissued many times over due to continued demand. Following up the SLB 23 with his signature MID and 97 editions from ES Footwear, Barbier's design innovations contributed to the progression and evolution of modern skateboarding shoe design. [7] In addition to the innovative design, these shoes also became the blueprint for skateboarding footwear endorsement deals. [8]

As a professional skateboarder, Sal was one of the six members of the original Plan B lineup. One of his trademark moves, the “Sal Flip” is ingrained in modern skateboarding culture, and featured in popular skateboarding video games, instructional guides and training apps. [9] [10] He was the first professional skateboarder to maneuver a kickflip to board slide on a handrail and perform a front side big spin on a handrail. His legendary skills were immortalized in the classic 1989 skate video Hokus Pokus. [11]

Barbier founded and directed several skate companies that shaped the market of the 90’s, and still have an influence on many of today’s brands. [12] In his role as a creative director, Sal continues to work with the limited-edition Aesthetics Skateboards, and select collaborations. [13]

Michael Shawn Carroll is a professional skateboarder from Daly City, California, United States. Mark Gonzales, also known as "Gonz" and "The Gonz", is an American professional skateboarder and artist. Gonzales and Kaupas are also credited with the first known boardslides on a handrail. Gonzales pioneering influence on skateboarding has caused him to be known as the godfather of modern street skateboarding and was named the "Most Influential Skateboarder of All Time" by Transworld Skateboarding magazine in December 2011.

Alien Workshop (AWS) is an independent American skateboarding company that was founded in 1990 by Chris Carter, Mike Hill, and Neil Blender in Dayton, Ohio. Following periods under the ownership of the Burton snowboard company and original team rider Rob Dyrdek in 2012, the company was acquired by Pacific Vector Holdings in October 2013. Alien Workshop produced skateboard decks, wheels, apparel, and other skateboard accessories prior to its closure in May 2014. In 2015, Alien Workshop was revived with an all-amateur team and distribution through Tum Yeto. They released a series of new skate decks and Bunker Down, the brand's sixth video. As of 2016, Alien Workshop, led by Mike Hill phased out working with Tum-Yeto and moved all operations back to the Mound Laboratories in Miamisburg, Ohio. After a tumultuous ownership history they have returned to operations as an independent company.
