Salmon River Central School District is a school district headquartered in Fort Covington (CDP), New York.

Much of the district is in Franklin County. There, it includes the census-designated place of Fort Covington and portions of the CDP of Akwesasne; the district also covers the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation, the United States portion of the Akwesasne territory. The district includes all of the Town of Fort Covington and almost all of the Town of Bombay as well as most of the Town of Westville and a portion of the Town of Bangor. [1]

A portion of the district is in St. Lawrence County. There, it covers additional portions of Akwesasne CDP, and sections of the Town of Brasher. [2]

History

In 1996 there was a protest where Native Americans occupied the St. Regis Mohawk School, which ended after the school district made a settlement with the tribe. [3]

In 2021, superintendent Stanley Harper, along with the superintendent of the LaFayette Central School District, asked Governor of New York Kathy Hochul for state funding to repair elementary schools which have indigenous populations, including the elementary school on the Mohawk Reservation. [4]

In 2024, the district announced plans to build a solar panel set on a 16-acre (6.5 ha) plot of land. [5]

It is also known by its Mohawk name, Akwesasne. The population was 3,288 at the 2010 census. The reservation is adjacent to the Akwesasne reserve in Ontario and Quebec across the St. Lawrence River. The Mohawk consider the entire community to be one unit and have the right to travel freely across the international border.

New York State Route 95 (NY 95) is a north–south state highway located within Franklin County, New York, in the United States. It extends for 13.37 miles (21.52 km) from an intersection with U.S. Route 11 (US 11) in the town of Moira to a junction with NY 37 in the town of Bombay. The highway terminates less than 3 miles (5 km) south of the Canadian border. NY 95 initially continued south to Saint Regis Falls when it was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. It was cut back to its current length in the mid-1930s.

Hogansburg is a hamlet, in the Town of Bombay, in Franklin County, New York, United States. It lies on NY 37 near the Canadian-US border at the confluence of the St. Regis River with the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Hogansburg borders the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation.

The Niskayuna Central School District is a public school district located in Niskayuna, New York. It has a total enrollment of 4,312 students in grades K–12 in 8 schools. The district superintendent was Susan Kay Salvaggio until 2014. After that, Dr. Cosimo Tangorra became the superintendent and is the current superintendent. Then Until Salvaggio was superintendent Kevin. S. Baughman held the prestigious note of being the second-highest school administrator in the State of NY, making over $200,000, nearly double the salary of the Governor. The Iroquois of St Regis are independent of the federal and provincial governments, this division is largely for statistical purposes.

Fort Covington is a census-designated place (CDP) within the town of Fort Covington, Franklin County, New York, United States. It consists of the hamlet of Fort Covington, as well as a large amount of rural land surrounding the hamlet, such that the CDP occupies about one half of the area within the town limits. The population of the CDP was 1,308 at the 2010 census, out of a total town population of 1,676.
