Salote Vuibureta Radrodro (born 1956 or 1957) is a Fijian politician and former member of the Parliament of Fiji. [1] She is a member of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA). In 2022 she was convicted of corruption and sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment.

Personal life

Radrodo is from Mualevu in the Lau Islands. [2] Her parents were Naibuka and Leba Vuibureta. She was educated at Adi Cakobau School. [3] She was educated at Adi Cakobau School [3] and the University of the South Pacific, where she obtained a Bachelor of Art in Management and Public Administration and a masters in Governance. [2] She spent 36 years as a public servant, working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Public Service Commission, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation from which she retired in 2012. [3] [2]

Her husband is Kitione and she has three sons, and grandchildren. [3]

Political career

She was elected to parliament as a SODELPA candidate at the 2014 elections, gaining 2300 votes [4] One of eight women elected to the 50-member parliament, she said that she hoped they could "work together across parties for the empowerment of other Fijian women". [5]

During her maiden speech to parliament she asserted that the fact that she was not allowed to speak in her indigenous language in parliament was a breach of her human rights, and asked "Why can't the Government come up with alternative options like provision of interpreters in chambers which I am sure we are all familiar with from our exposure in meetings overseas?" [3]

In 2017 she was serving as the Opposition Whip. [1]

She was re-elected in the 2018 general election. [2] [6]

On 6 September 2022 she was convicted of one count of giving false information to a public servant and one count of obtaining a financial advantage after giving a false address to parliament in order to claim travel and accommodation expenses. [7] [8] On 22 September 2022 she was sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment for the offences. [9]

Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau was a Fijian chief, monarch, and warlord (Vunivalu) who united part of Fiji's warring tribes under his leadership, establishing a united Fijian kingdom. He was born on Natauloa, Nairai Island in Lomaiviti but spent his youth on Vanuaso, Gau, Lomaiviti, later returning to Bau to re-establish his Father's Ratu Tanoa Visawaqa reign. Ratu Epenisa Seru Visawaqa was given the name "Cakobau" meaning destroyer of Bau, in reference to his grandfathers' (Nailatikau) effort to first claim the tile from the people of Butoni and Lovoni, returned with most of his warriors from Vanuaso, Gau, Lomaiviti to coup the leadership in Bau then and later takeover his father's title; known after his father as the 6th "Vunivalu" or Warlord of Bau.

Adi Cakobau School in Fiji was founded in 1948 by the Fijian government as a boarding school to provide an intermediate education for Fijian girls. It was named after the granddaughter of Seru Epenisa Cakobau, the King of Fiji who united the islands under his authority in 1871 and ceded the nation to the United Kingdom three years later. It became a full-fledged secondary school in 1954. Its English language curriculum included traditional academic subjects, traditional dance, music and crafts. Since a goal was to provide wives for leaders of the nation, the curriculum included "chiefly protocol." The school moved to its present location in Sawani, Viti Levu in 1956. It is located at Ro Camaisala Road, next to Sawani Village, in the province of Naitasiri. The counterpart school for boys is Queen Victoria School. Most of the Fijian elite by 2001 had been students at one of these schools. Adi Cakobau School won the Coca-Cola Lite Games for the unprecedented twelfth time in a row on 28 April 2012.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2018 Fijian general election</span>

General elections were held in Fiji on 14 November 2018. The result was a victory for the ruling FijiFirst party of Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, which received just over 50% of the vote and 27 of the 51 seats in Parliament, a loss of five seats. The main opposition party, Social Democratic Liberal Party, gained six seats, whilst the National Federation Party retained its three seats.
