Sam McBride is a Toronto Island ferry operated by the Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division of the City of Toronto government. [4] The ferry serves the Toronto Islands from a dock at Jack Layton Ferry Terminal in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The ferry was commissioned in 1939, built by Toronto Dry Dock Ltd. [5] [6] Her namesake was a former Alderman and Mayor, who had been the founding chairman of the Toronto Transportation Commission, which at the time the ferry was built, ran the ferries to the island.
Prior to an accident in 2022, the ferry operated with a crew of six consisting of a marine captain and mate in the wheelhouse, an engineer in the engine room and three deckhands on deck. [7] After the accident, Transport Canada increased the crew requirements from six to 13 so that the ferry crew would be better able to assist passengers on a crowded ferry in case an evacuation became necessary. [3]
On June 20, 1941, a Norwegian Northrop N-3PB seaplane clipped the second deck of the ferry. The plane was destroyed after hitting the waters, and the two crew members, Instructor Lieutenant Finn Strand Kjos and student pilot Tron Harsvik, on board were killed. [8] Damage was sustained to upper deck and later repaired.
She was transferred from the TTC to Metro Parks and Culture department in 1962 (and by Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division since 1998).
The ship was dry docked in 1973 to replace her engines. [9]
In October 2012, Toronto City Council decided that funds should be set aside to replace Sam McBride and her two fleet-mates, Thomas Rennie and William Inglis with new vessels. [10]
In 2019, there were two incidents where a throttle malfunction prevented the engines from being put into reverse. The ability to put the engines into reverse is needed to slow and stop the ferry as the ferry has no other braking mechanism. With a throttle malfunction, the ferry can still be steered. There were no injuries from either incident, but the ferry was temporarily pulled from service for repairs and testing. [11]
Shortly after 5 PM on August 20, 2022 the ferry hit the mainland dock resulting in 12 passengers requiring medical attention and a suspension of ferry service to the islands for the rest of the day. There were 912 passengers and 6 crew members on board the ferry at the time of the collision. [1] The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said it would investigate the crash. After two days in dock for inspection, Transport Canada cleared the ferry to go back into service. [2] The suspected cause incident was a throttle malfunction affecting both the bow and stern main engines, that prevented the ferry from stopping; however, the TSB could not replicate this problem. Instead, in an August 2024 report, the TSB gave speed as the suspected cause; the ferry was travelling at 5 knots (9.3 km/h; 5.8 mph) instead of the normal 3 knots (5.6 km/h; 3.5 mph) as it approached the docks. The TSB recommended a crew of 13 instead of the six as then used so that the crew would be better able to assist passengers if an evacuation were needed. [3]
On September 1, 2022, the Sam McBride suffered another throttle malfunction while docking; there were no passenger injuries, but the ferry was again pulled from service. The problem was traced to a software issue. The ferry returned to service after testing. [11]
Swissair Flight 111 (SR111/SWR111) was a scheduled international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States, to Cointrin Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. The flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines. On 2 September 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 performing this flight, registration HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax Stanfield International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres from shore, roughly equidistant from the small fishing and tourist communities of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater, killing all 229 passengers and crew on board the MD-11, making the crash the deadliest accident in the history of Swissair and the deadliest accident involving the McDonnell Douglas MD-11. It is also the second-deadliest aviation accident to occur in Canada, behind Arrow Air Flight 1285R.

Air France Flight 358 was a regularly scheduled international flight from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France, to Toronto Pearson International Airport in Ontario, Canada. On the afternoon of 2 August 2005, while landing at Pearson airport, the Airbus A340-313E operating the route overran the runway and crashed into nearby Etobicoke Creek, approximately 300 m (980 ft) beyond the end of the runway. All 309 passengers and crew on board the Airbus survived, but twelve people sustained serious injuries. The accident highlighted the vital role played by highly trained flight attendants during an emergency.
MV Holiday Island was a Canadian RORO ferry that operated across the Northumberland Strait between the ports of Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia. The vessel was owned by the Government of Canada and was managed and operated by Northumberland Ferries Limited. After suffering a serious fire, the ship was broken up for scrap in 2023
MV Queen of the North was a roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ferry built by AG Weser of Germany and operated by BC Ferries, which ran along an 18-hour route along the British Columbia Coast of Canada between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, a route also known as the Inside Passage. On March 22, 2006, with 101 people aboard, she failed to make a planned course change, ran aground and sank. Two passengers, whose bodies were never found, died in the incident. The ship had a gross register tonnage of 8,806, and an overall length of 125 metres (410 ft). She had a capacity of 700 passengers and 115 cars.
Chief Wawatam was a coal-fired steel ship that was based, for most of its working life, in St. Ignace, Michigan. The vessel was named after a distinguished Ojibwa chief of the 1760s. In initial revenue service, the Chief Wawatam served as a train ferry, passenger ferry and icebreaker that operated year-round at the Straits of Mackinac between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, Michigan. During the winter months, it sometimes took many hours to cross the five-mile-wide Straits, and Chief Wawatam was fitted with complete passenger hospitality spaces.
MV Queen of Surrey is a double-ended C-class roll-on/roll-off ferry in the BC Ferries fleet. The ship was launched in 1980 and entered service in 1981. The ferry normally operates on BC Ferries' Horseshoe Bay to Langdale route. She is named for the city of Surrey. On May 12, 2003, Queen of Surrey suffered an engine fire that disabled the ferry in Howe Sound. No one was injured and the ship was returned to service. In 2004, the ferry was involved in a collision with a tugboat, and in 2019 she struck a fixed structure at the Langdale terminal. The 2019 crash lead to passengers being stranded on the vessel for over ten hours.
MV Queen of Oak Bay is a double-ended C-class roll-on/roll-off ferry in the BC Ferries fleet, launched in 1981 at Victoria, British Columbia. The 139.29-metre (457 ft) long, 6,969-ton vessel has a capacity for 362 cars and over 1,500 passengers and crew. She normally operates on BC Ferries' Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay (Nanaimo) route, part of the Trans-Canada Highway. She is named for the district of Oak Bay.
Spirit of Vancouver Island is an S-class ferry, part of the BC Ferries fleet. Along with MV Spirit of British Columbia, it is the largest in the BC Ferries fleet. The ship was completed in 1994 and serves the Swartz Bay – Tsawwassen route. In 2018, Spirit of Vancouver Island began a mid-life refit in Poland, where it was converted to a dual-fuel system to allow liquefied natural gas propulsion. The vessel returned to service in 2019.
