The Great Lakes,also called the Great Lakes of North America,are a series of large interconnected freshwater lakes spanning the Canada–United States border. The five lakes are Superior,Michigan,Huron,Erie,and Ontario. The Great Lakes Waterway enables modern travel and shipping by water among the lakes. The lakes connect to the Atlantic Ocean via the Saint Lawrence River,and to the Mississippi River basin through the Illinois Waterway.
Lake Erie is the fourth-largest lake by surface area of the five Great Lakes in North America and the eleventh-largest globally. It is the southernmost,shallowest,and smallest by volume of the Great Lakes and also has the shortest average water residence time. At its deepest point,Lake Erie is 210 feet (64 m) deep,making it the only Great Lake whose deepest point is above sea level.
The St. Lawrence Seaway is a system of locks,canals,and channels in Canada and the United States that permits oceangoing vessels to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes of North America,as far inland as Duluth,Minnesota,at the western end of Lake Superior. The seaway is named for the St. Lawrence River,which flows from Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean. Legally,the seaway extends from Montreal,Quebec,to Lake Erie,and includes the Welland Canal. The Commission to Explore a Route for a Canal to Lake Erie and Report,known as the Erie Canal Commission,was a body created by the New York State Legislature in 1810 to plan the Erie Canal. In 1817 a Canal Fund led by Commissioners of the Canal Fund was established to oversee the funding of construction of the canal. In 1826 a Canal Board,of which both the planning commissioners and the Canal Fund commissioners were members,was created to take control of the operational canal. The term "Canal Commission" was at times applied to any of these bodies. Afterwards the canal commissioners were minor state cabinet officers responsible for the maintenance and improvements of the state's canals.
Presque Isle State Park is a 3,112-acre (1,259 ha) Pennsylvania State Park on an arching,sandy peninsula jutting into Lake Erie,4 miles (6 km) west of the city of Erie,in Millcreek Township,Erie County,Pennsylvania,in the United States. The peninsula sweeps northeastward,surrounding Presque Isle Bay along the park's southern coast. Dennis T. Gorski was an American politician in New York and a Marine. A resident of Cheektowaga,New York,Gorski served as County Executive of Erie County,New York,which includes Buffalo and many of its suburbs. He was the first Democrat-elected Erie County Executive and the first Erie County Executive elected to three four-year terms. Gorski was an Erie County Legislator and a member of the New York State Assembly prior to three-term service as county executive. During his second term as County Executive,he ran for Congress to succeed Democrat Henry Nowak,but he was defeated in the general election by Republican Jack Quinn.
Sandusky Bay is a bay on Lake Erie in northern Ohio,formed at the mouth of the Sandusky River. It was identified as Lac Sandouské on a 1718 French map,with early variations recorded that suggest the name was derived from Native American languages. The Thomas A. Edison Memorial Bridge was constructed across it in the 20th century to connect highways in Erie and Ottawa counties.
