Sandeep Sawant is an Indian theatre, film and television personality. [1] [2] He is the director and script writer of the national award-winning Marathi movie Shwaas. [3] [4] Sawant was one of the producers of Shwaas, his debut film. [2] Author Sandeep Unnithan credits him to have resurrected Marathi cinema. [2]

Sawant has made documentaries for television, some of which have been related to children. Times of India reporter Mukta Rajadhyaksha comments that he has a flair for working with children that was manifest in his handling of Ashwin Chitle the boy who won the national award for best child artist for his portrayal of Parshya in Shwaas. [1]

Sawant resides in Vile Parle, Mumbai. He is a psychology graduate [1] and is married to Neeraja Patwardhan, who has designed costumes for Shwaas. [2]

Concept, screenplay, dialogues and direction of the 2017 Marathi movie Nadi Vahate are by Sandeep Sawant. He and his wife Neeraja Patwardhan produced the film. [5]

Shwaas is a Marathi film, released in 2004. It was India's official entry to the 2004 Oscars and was ranked 6th in the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film category. Its storyline is based on a real-life incident in Pune. With a low-budget of the Indian rupee of 65 lakhs (6 million), Shwaas won the National Award for best film in 2004, nearly 50 years since a Marathi film last earned this title. Directed by debutant Sandeep Sawant, it was shot in 33 days at Sindhudurg, Konkan, Pune and at KEM Hospital in Pune. Shwaas was acknowledged as a "significant turn for Marathi cinema" which had been going through a low patch. After its success, it was released in Hindi, Bengali and Tamil languages.

22 June 1897 is a 1979 Marathi film co-written by Shankar Nag and Nachiket Patwardhan and directed by the husband and wife team of Jayoo Patwardhan and Nachiket Patwardhan. The duo are also practising architects. It is based on the true life story of the assassination of British Government officers Walter Charles Rand ICS and Lt. Charles Egerton Ayerst by the Chapekar brothers. The film has been included in the book One Hundred Indian Feature Films: An Annotated Filmography, a representative selection from the first Indian talkies to the then-present date (1988). The title of the film is the date of the assassination, 22 June 1897. It won the 1980 Indian Silver Lotus at the National Film Awards in two categories: Best film on National Integration and Art Direction. It also won the 1980 Maharashtra State awards for best film of the year and best director. The film has been included in the selected collection of Indian films and videos in the US Library of Congress. Most of the performers in the film then belonged to Theatre Academy, Pune.
