Alexander Brown (born 7 October 1950) is a Scottish former first-class cricketer.
Brown was born at Coatbridge in October 1950. He was educated in Coatbridge at St Patrick's School,before going up to Bell College of Technology in Hamilton. A wicket-keeper who played club cricket for both Drumpellier Cricket Club and Uddingston Cricket Club,Brown first played for Scotland in a first-class match against Ireland at Dublin in 1977. He played for Scotland until 1987,making nine first-class appearances,eight of which came against Ireland,and one against the touring New Zealanders. [1] In List A one-day cricket he made 21 appearances across the Benson &Hedges Cup and the NatWest Trophy. [2] Brown scored 256 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 19.69,with two half centuries and a highest score of 74;as wicket-keeper,he took 13 catches and made three stumpings. [3] In one-day cricket,he scored 281 runs at an average of 14.05,with a highest score of 47;as wicket-keeper he took 15 catches and made three stumpings. [4]
Leslie Ethelbert George Ames was a wicket-keeper and batsman for the England cricket team and Kent County Cricket Club. In his obituary,Wisden described him as the greatest wicket-keeper-batsman of all time. He is the only wicket-keeper-batsman to score a hundred first-class centuries.
Ronald Arthur Saggers was an Australian cricketer who played for New South Wales. He played briefly for the Australian team,playing six Tests between 1948 and 1950. In his Test cricket career he made 24 dismissals and scored 30 runs at an average of 10.00.
Donald Tallon was an Australian cricketer who played 21 Test matches as a wicket-keeper between 1946 and 1953. He was widely regarded by his contemporaries as Australia's finest ever wicket-keeper and one of the best in Test history,with an understated style,an ability to anticipate the flight,length and spin of the ball and an efficient stumping technique. Tallon toured England as part of Don Bradman's Invincibles of 1948 and was recognised as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1949 for his performances during that season. During his Test career,Tallon made 58 dismissals comprising 50 catches and 8 stumpings.
Robert William Taylor MBE is an English former cricketer who played as wicket-keeper for Derbyshire between 1961 and 1984 and for England between 1971 and 1984. He made 57 Test,and 639 first-class cricket appearances in total,taking 1,473 catches. The 2,069 victims across his entire career is the most of any wicket-keeper in first-class history. He is considered one of the world's most accomplished wicket-keepers. He made his first-class debut for Minor Counties against South Africa in 1960,having made his Staffordshire debut in 1958. He became Derbyshire's first choice wicket-keeper when George Dawkes sustained a career-ending injury. His final First Class appearance was at the Scarborough Festival in 1988. He remained first choice until his retirement except for a short period in 1964 when Laurie Johnson was tried as a batsman-wicketkeeper. He was a part of the English squad which finished as runners-up at the 1979 Cricket World Cup.
Arthur Frederick Augustus Lilley,variously known as Dick Lilley or A. A. Lilley,was an English professional cricketer who played for Warwickshire County Cricket Club from 1888 to 1911,and in 35 Test matches for England from 1896 to 1909. He was born in Holloway Head,Birmingham,and died in Brislington,Bristol.
George Owen Dawkes was a first-class cricketer who played for Leicestershire between 1937 and 1939 and for Derbyshire between 1947 and 1961 as a wicket keeper and a lower-order right-handed batsman. During the 1949–50 season he toured India with a team of players making up a Commonwealth XI.
Richard Alexander Bennett was an English first-class cricketer,who made 37 appearances in first-class cricket from 1896 to 1903. He led his own personal cricket team on a tour of the West Indies in early 1902,as well as playing county cricket for Hampshire. Militarily active,he served in the First World War with the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars.
James Stone was an English first-class cricketer and umpire. A batsman and wicket-keeper,he played for Hampshire and Glamorgan between 1900 and 1923,making over 300 first-class appearances,in which he scored over 10,000 runs and claimed over 400 dismissals as a wicket-keeper. He later stood as an umpire in nearly 240 matches between 1912 and 1934.
William Dorrinton was an English first-class cricketer who played for Kent,Hampshire,Suffolk and the Marylebone Cricket Club in a 94–match career which began in 1836 and lasted until 1847,a year before his death. While Dorrinton has two first–class wickets to his name,he became a wicket keeper part–way through his career,taking 89 catches and performing 25 stumpings.
