Sanjay Narayanrao Meshram (born 1970) [1] is an Indian politician from Maharashtra. He is an MLA from Umred Assembly constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Caste community, in Nagpur district. He won the 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election representing the Indian National Congress. [2]

Early life and education

Meshram is born in Nagpur, Maharashtra. [3] He is the son of Naryanrao Meshram. He completed his BTech in mechanical at IIT, Mumbai in 1986. [1] He is a former Rotary district president. [3]

Career

Meshram won from Umred Assembly constituency representing Indian National Congress in the 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election. He polled 85,372 votes and defeated his nearest rival, Sudhir Laxman Parwe of the Bharatiya Janata Party, by a margin of 12,825 votes. [4] [5]

In January 2024, he filed a plea in the Supreme Court along with Congress leader Jaya Thakur, seeking an interim stay on the then new law for appointing Election Commission of India members, where the chief justice of India was excluded from the panel. However, the court declined the request. [6]

Sudhakar Shamrao Deshmukh was a member of the 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He represented the Nagpur West Assembly Constituency. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Deshmukh was also member of the 12th Assembly (2009–2014). Deshmukh was the president of Indian National Congress's (INC) Nagpur district committee. Deshmukh, then with the Indian National Congress, was member of Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1991 to 1996. He joined the BJP in 2000 and was the president of BJP's Nagpur city unit in 2007. Deshmukh is a commerce graduate from Nagpur University.

The 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election was held on 20 November 2024 to elect all 288 members of the state's Legislative Assembly to elect 288 members of the 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The turnout for the election was 66.05%, the highest since 1995. The ruling Maha Yuti alliance won a landslide victory, winning 235 seats.
