Santa Cruz da Graciosa is a civil parish in the municipality of the same name on the volcanic island [1] of Graciosa, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The parish occupies the northeastern corner of the island and is the home of the municipal seat, as well as economic center concentrating most municipal services, in addition to the main airport and port. The population in 2011 was 1,776, [2] in an area of 15.52 km2. [3]

Geography

Much like the rest of the settlements on Graciosa, although the communities are relatively disperse, they are concentrated along the roadways. The village and hamlets that formed were typical of the zones of colonizations, concentrating primarily in the northeast coast, then extending into the interior. The Lighthouse of Ponta da Barca is a beacon/lighthouse located along the 24 metres (79 ft) cliffs of Ponta da Barca, near the hamlet of Bom Jesus, civil parish of Santa Cruz da Graciosa on the island of the same, the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Immediately near the lighthouse, is the emblematic baleia de pedra, a curious geological basaltic rock that has resisted erosion, in the shape of a whale. The lighthouse includes a symmetrical single-floor building, and a 23-metre (75 ft) high cylindrical tower that extends its lamp to 71 metres (233 ft) above the ocean surface. It is considered a second-order lighthouse, which began operating on 1 February 1930.

Fort of Santa Cruz, is a 16th-century fortification located in the civil parish of Angústias, municipality of Horta, on the island of Faial in the Portuguese Azores. Occasionally referred to as the Castelo de Santa Cruz by locals, it is situated in the historic centre of the city, on the edge of Horta Bay. It was constructed to work in conjunction with the Fort of Bom Jesus at the mouth of the Ribeira da Conceição and Fort of Greta along the coast of the extinct spatter cone Monte da Guia, to defend the entrance to the harbour and southern access to the Bay.
