Santino Deng Wol is a South Sudanese military figure serving as the chief of defence forces of the South Sudan People's Defence Forces. [1] He served as Lion Division commander from 2007 to 2017 and currently serving as the Assistant Chief of Defence Force for Administration,Finance and Personnel of South Sudanese army,SSPDF after being transferred from the post of Ground Force Commander. His hometown is Udhum which is part of Aweil West County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
Santino Deng Wol has been a commander of South Sudanese military branch known as "Division 3" or simply "Lion Division" cored in Wunyiek,Aweil East County. In 2014 during rebellion of Riek Machar with his fellow Nuers,Deng Wol carried out many attacks in residential areas of the rebel forces in Bentiu,Bor and Malakal. On 1 July 2015,Deng Wol was listed in United Nation sanctions alongside his fellow South Sudanese war commanders namely Marial Chengdong and Peter Gadet for torching civilians alive in houses,targeting civilians and killing civilians in religious bases. [2] Wol's actions were connected to disruption of an agreed upon peace in the region. [3] On 11 April 2021,Wol was named Chief of Staff of the South Sudan People's Defence Forces. [1]

General Ibrahim Abboud was a Sudanese political figure who served as the head of state of Sudan between 1958 and 1964 and as President of Sudan in 1964;however,he soon resigned,ending Sudan's first period of military rule. A career soldier,Abboud served in World War II in Egypt and Iraq. In 1949,Abboud became the deputy Commander in Chief of the Sudanese military. Upon independence,Abboud became the Commander in Chief of the Military of Sudan.
Dr. John Garang de Mabior was a Sudanese politician and revolutionary leader. From 1983 to 2005,he led the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) during the Second Sudanese Civil War. He briefly served as First Vice President of Sudan for three weeks,from the comprehensive peace agreement of 2005 until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30,2005. A developmental economist by profession,Garang was a major influence on the movement that led to the foundation of South Sudan.
Salva Kiir Mayardit,also known as Salva Kiir,is a South Sudanese politician who has been the President of South Sudan since its independence on 9 July 2011. Prior to independence,he was the President of the Government of Southern Sudan,as well as First Vice President of Sudan,from 2005 to 2011. He was named Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2005,following the death of John Garang.

The South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF),formerly the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA),is the army of the Republic of South Sudan. The SPLA was founded as a guerrilla movement against the government of Sudan in 1983 and was a key participant of the Second Sudanese Civil War,led by John Garang. After Garang's death in 2005,Salva Kiir was named the SPLA's new Commander-in-Chief. As of 2010,the SPLA was divided into divisions of 10,000–14,000 soldiers.

Gabriel Gatwech Chan,more commonly known by the nickname Tang-Ginye or Tanginye meaning "long pipe",was a Nuer and a commander in various primarily Nuer rebel militias in South Sudan. General Tanginye led a southern border militia allied to the Khartoum government during Sudan's civil war. Members of the Sudanese armed forces loyal to Tanginye in Malakal clashed with the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2006,killing about 150 people,and in 2009 in breach of the peace deal. In April 2011,clashes between his militia and the SPLA in the state of Jonglei killed at least 57 according to government officials. Shortly thereafter,Tanginye surrendered to SPLA forces and was placed under house arrest in Juba awaiting charges against him. During the South Sudanese Civil War,he allied with the SPLA-IO and later Lam Akol's militia,a Juba linked rebel group called the National Democratic Movement (NDM) and became its chief of staff. In January 2017 he visited a NDM-allied group,the Tiger Faction New Forces,in the Hamra area in the northern Upper Nile. In course of this visit,the Tigers were attacked by SPLM-IO-affiliated fighters belonging to the militia of John Uliny,and Tanginye was killed alongside most of the Tigers.
Peter Gatdet Yak or Peter Gadet was a Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) general who became the leader of the South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA),a rebel movement in South Sudan.
Paul Malong Awan,also known as Paul Malong Awan Anei,King Paul,and General Paul,is a South Sudanese politician and military figure. Until 16 May 2017 he was the Chief of General Staffs (COGS) of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA). The Chief of General Staffs was the highest-ranking military officer in the SPLA,and also the principal military adviser to the President of the Republic of South Sudan and the National Security Council.
The South Sudan Democratic Movement (SSDM),sometimes called the South Sudan Democratic Movement/Army (SSDM/A),was a South Sudanese militant group. Along with its armed wing,the South Sudan Defence Army (SSDA),rebelled against the government of South Sudan led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement.
The South Sudanese Civil War was a multi-sided civil war in South Sudan between forces of the government and opposition forces. In December 2013,President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar and 10 others of attempting a coup d'état. Machar denied trying to start a coup and fled to lead the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO). Fighting broke out between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and SPLM-IO,igniting the civil war. Ugandan troops were deployed to fight alongside the South Sudanese government. The United Nations has peacekeepers in the country as part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Armed clashes took in Wau State from late June 2016 to January 2019 between the Dinka-dominated Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and local opposition forces,consisting of tribal Fertit militias as well as fighters claiming allegiance to Riek Machar. It is unclear to what extent these rebels were actually part of the SPLM-IO or acting independently while using the SPLM-IO's name. The clashes resulted in the arrest of the state's governor,Elias Waya Nyipuoc,widespread death and destruction in the state capital,Wau town,and the displacement of up to 150,000 people.
James Ajongo Mawut Was the Chief and top General of the South Sudanese Military,the South Sudanese Peoples Defence Force,(SSPDF). He was appointed on 9 May 2017 and took-over the office on 10 May 2017 after he was sworn in by the President Salva Kiir Mayardit in the presidential palace. He was an Aweilian. His native land was Barmayen,which indicates that he was from the Luo people. Current deputy governor of Aweil Uber Mawut is his biological brother.
The South Sudan Patriotic Army is a South Sudanese rebel militia that takes part in the South Sudanese Civil War and serves as the military wing of Costello Garang Ring's South Sudan Patriotic Movement. Well armed and relatively numerous,the SSPA mostly operates in Northern Bahr el Ghazal and is considered to be one of the most powerful rebel groups in South Sudan.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Abdelrahman al-Burhan is a Sudanese army general who is the de facto ruler of Sudan. Following the Sudanese Revolution in April 2019,he was handed control of the military junta,the Transitional Military Council,a day after it was formed,due to protesters' dissatisfaction with the establishment ties of initial leader Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf. He served as chairman of the TMC until a draft constitutional declaration signed with civilians went into effect on the 17th of August and a collective head of state Transitional Sovereignty Council was formed,also to be initially headed by al-Burhan.

On 4 January 2018,SPLM-IO rebels loyal to Chan Garang Lual attacked the western parts of Juba,the capital of South Sudan. The raid was part of the South Sudanese Civil War. Once in Juba,the insurgents were reportedly joined by Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) soldiers who were loyal to deposed chief of staff Paul Malong Awan. Following heavy fighting lasting until early 5 January,the rebels retreated into the countryside. Even though Chan Garang assumed responsibility for the attack,both the South Sudanese government and the SPLM-IO condemned the clashes,with the latter claiming that its forces had not been involved at all.
